  7. the Summer Seaside Kitchen by Jenny Colgan - another chick lit disaster for me, I've read a couple of Jenny's books and enjoyed them, and I did realise that I have read the next book in the series, which meant that, of course, I knew what was going to happen. However that initially didn't put me off that much, but unfortunately I just found this one a bit boring, I got halfway through before ditching it which I think is more than a fair chance. Anyway Flora is originally from the remote Scottish island of Mure, she grew up on a farm but became the first in her family to go to university and is now working in London for a law firm, where she has a hopeless crush on her obnoxious, career driven boss, Joel. One day a lawsuit to stop a wind farm being built off the coast of Mure is taken on by the firm, and Flora is despatched to the island to try to find out exactly what is going on, and to smooth things over with the locals. But as she hasn't been back since her mother's funeral, she's not too welcome though her dad and brothers are happy for her to cook and clean for them, which is exactly the life that her mother, much as she loved her family, didn't want for her daughter. So there are lots of digs about "posh London ways" etc, and not much really happens. I'm afraid I just wasn't interested and of course knowing the outcome took out any suspense for me. So unfortunately this one is a DNF.
  8. I knew you were waiting (for me) - George Michael and Aretha Franklin
  9. Must be 2021 census that came on recently. I've never figured out the once removed thing either. I think Jacob would be your second cousin once removed but it gets very confusing.
  10. the 1911 census is the most recent one to come online, not sure if that will help you in your search.

  17. sorry about that! I'm not really a big fan of so-called chick lit although some authors are better at it than others, this wasn't a bad book I just thought it was all too neatly wrapped up, though maybe that's the type of genre it's in ie nice light comfort read and there's nothing wrong with that. I do have a couple of her other books and it won't put me off reading those.
  18. I think that's what's called having your cake and eating it, best of both worlds etc!
  19. Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
  20. The Book-Lover's Retreat by Heidi Swain - 3 friends who are obsessed with a book called Hope Falls, and it's film adaptation, can't wait to spend all 6 weeks of the summer holidays at the cottage and lake where a large part of the film was made, however it looks like the holiday may be off when one of them has to pull out due to family circumstances, but a quick call to the cottage's owner and she arranges for someone else on the waiting list to join them. This person isn't quite who they expected though the cover gives this away immediately, but once the awkwardness is over the newly formed trio start to bond. They all have secrets (none of which are particularly exceptional and I pretty much guessed what one of them was) and decisions to make - should Rachel move in with her obsessive boyfriend Jeremy, should Emily, who's been made redundant, take up her new job offer or try to make a real go of her hobby, making clothes and pictures out of patchwork fabric? As the 6 weeks pass and the group become closer, and also make friends in the village, crossroads are reached and they have to decide which path to take. No real surprises though, and to be honest I thought everything wrapped up a bit too neatly and at least one character was almost too good to be true, but maybe I'm just being cynical! A cosy holiday read, and I have a couple more of her books for when I feel like an easy read. 6.5/10
