I suggest Atlas Shrugged over The Fountainhead. Atlas Shrugged is good, it shouldn't be too hard, they are actual stories, so you don't have to quite get into the philosophy. And One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is great! It'd probably only take you a few hours.
Now I am daunted by The Scarlet Letter, as my mom has been wanting to read it with me for ages.
