  1. Stayed up a wee later than planned to finally finish Hild. On to A Christmas Carol ahead of Christmas.
  2. The annual showing of It's a Charlie Brown Christmas. Now I know Christmas is upon us
  3. Does Amazon UK have free books? A lot of classics are free, one cent or a dollar on the US site like Black Beauty A Christmas carol Emma Ivanhoe Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, The Jungle Book and The Man Who Would be King by Kipling Les Miserables Little Women Mansfield Park Middsummer Nights Dream Othello The Odyssey Persuasion by Jane Austen Robinson Crusoe (Which I absolutely can not get into) The Scarlet Letter The Secret Garden Tess of the d'Urbervilles This Side of Paradice by Fitzgerald Three Musketeers Through the Looking Glass H.G.Wells' The Time Machine and War of the Worlds The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Those are the ones I've found.
  4. I just heard about these books- I guess the 3rd one sold out in record time? I did see the trailer before Catching Fire, but it didn't look... well, it looked like a more futuristic version of the Hunger Games! Please tell me no! I really want a good trilogy right now. Anyway, I was reading an article yesterday about the movie coming out and it said the author is only 24! Just downloaded the sample for the first book and might start it after Hild. I'm 75% finished now.
  5. Nothing to Envy was great and so was Escape from Camp 14. I can recommend The Aquariumms of Pyongyang by Kang Chol-hwan and Pierre Rigoulot. The Kang family became prosperous in Japan in the 30's but returned to North Korea in the 60's, only to be sent to prison work camps. Tough topic, written well. Edited to add: also good is The World is Bigger Now by Euna Lee or Somewhere On the Inside by Laura and Lisa Ling. Both Euna and Laura were held in detention in North Korea after filming there for National Geographic. I just saw the actual piece they filmed inside North Korea and it is full of footage in the country, if you can find it, definitely watch it. Its thrilling. I found it streaming online.
  6. Cool- thanks! I will check into Mad River... Oh- and Killing Floor is one of the best Jack Reacher books Without Fail is my favorite to date. So great I want to re read it and I just read it this summer!
  7. WH was such a close 4th for me . Loved it.
  8. Adorable puppy! Have you seen the movie?

    Hi!

Hey Maria! Your English is great- don't worry about it. I loved the Great and Secret Show... Clive Barker has a special shelf in my bookcase
  10. Watching Baltimore and New England in football (American Football, of course), waiting for San Francisco to take on Seattle. I am not a big football fan- of any sport, really- but the SF game is a big one and I want to see how these guys can possibly play in snow and freezing temps. It's about 45 F (about 7C) here now, but was 26F (-3C? I think) last night. Brrr. This is California for goodness sake!
  11. A&W Root Beer lots of ice- yum!
  12. We are best of friends! I never thought of it that way before.
  13. Dropped 22 Faces to focus on Hild. 39% today.
  14. LOOOOVED Stiff! I forgot all about her. Still reading Hild, 39%. I like it, its just there are so many other books I've discovered on this site that I want to read!
  15. Reading Lolita in Tehran? That was an excellent book, I thought it more about what they wouldn't do for religion.
  16. How are you liking the books? They keep being recommended to me... I hear they are graphic, but that's ok with me- can you give me a brief review?
  17. Oh my gosh! An Australian Cattle dog puppy!! I saw a Siberian Huskie at the grocery store today and it looked just like your Avatar! Luka is mine (top), Jake (bottom) is a friend's Kerry who passed. And yes, he really was in that setting!
  18. Awesome story! <3
  19. I get so the thought just paralyzes me! I am so sorry for your loss, I cant even imagine what it will be like. I would love to get another dog but Luka is a one dog in the house kinda dog. Actually, he hates other dogs Kerries are more popular in Europe (I saw one in Amsterdam) mainly in Ireland. They are used to hunt small vermin on farms and tree badgers. Luka is a dark Kerry- so hard to take pictures of- the ones that show look more blue: (This is Jake, and one of my favorite pictures of him) Is that your dog in your Avatar?
  20. Hm... I've got: Sound and the Fury (Liked it) Naked Lunch (hated it) War and Peace (loved it) Gulag Archipelago (loved it) I don't know what is so Incredibly Tough about them though, and I wouldn't necessarily call myself and Extreme Reader TBR Pet Sematary Trainspotting Sophie's Choice Moby Dick
  21. That's a close one, since Hunger Games was pretty close too. Anyway, the quality and great translations make me anticipate the next two!
  22. Thanks! I've only seen one other one in 9 years!
  23. I don't ever want to live my life without a dog! Its just me and Luka and has been for the last 9 years- well, now I have a five year old, but we've gone through the death of my brother, a sort of divorce, 2 moves, lived in 3 homes and through my pregnancy. He follows me all over the house, hates water and mud so is always super clean and doesn't shed. He's 9 now and I'm terrified of losing him! I'll never forget the first day I saw him, all he did was sit on my lap and watch his brothers and sisters play, all he wanted to do was be with me He is a Kerry Blue Terrier and I love him so much!
  24. I agree- I liked it too. I LOVE how the set looked like real theater. I watched 1/2 of it and thought everyone was really good- sometimes when Carrie acted innocent, I don't think she pulled that off- not like Julie Andrews. But all in all, I totally want more live REAL tv... not "reality" tv
