My brother and I were very close, but I am grateful for the time we did have together and I can't wait til I see him again. And Cheers to the 10 month year! On the school issue, I kinda just figured why not. I love to read and study (some things) and I thought maybe I could do something with that. I am going for an AA, major in English. I am just taking a basic English composition class for this semester to get used to getting back to school (its been 20 years). Next semester I might have to take Algebra (ok, I do have to, but I'm trying not to think about it) and then another English class before I get to take all the fun English classes- the Short Story, Intro to Mythology, The Classic Novel, Contemporary Fiction, etc. I can't wait!!

Who is your favorite playwright ?

For some reason, I totally forgot he did Rosencrantz... (I just can not spell all that out- good job) -
Ya, but it is my favorite movie of all time lol There have been so many plot leaks! I dunno if its on purpose or not. I guess I've been reading a lot of the comments posted on the articles Some seem to think they will use some of it, others think no way. I've not read the novels but I have seen all three (ya, I'm a purist) of the movies at least 100 times. I will totally see them though, they can't be worse than The Phantom Menace!

Did you know Ken Burns is a film maker too? You might have the "deluxe Kindle version" or something as such, which includes some of the stunning PBS series on the Civil War he did. He is amazing. (There is also one on WWII). They are both available through Amazon too. I did not know he did a book as well. The Civil War (Burn's film) was my introduction to American historian and author Shelby Foote. I have some of his books on my shelves, TBR, but his perspectives and commentary on the Confederacy's isssues/ position are so interesting. I love American History and will be trying to slip a class in on my next semester Both my dad and I study Civil War history together.

Glad to hear about Cloud Atlas, I have the Kindle Sample, I am intrigued. After The Fountainhead though, I need a bit of a break from philosophy!

I have been waiting for that movie! Horns is one of my favorite books. I am curious to see how Daniel Radcliff handles the role, Joe Hill has endorsed the project and says he is quite good. I just looked it up- it comes out here on Halloween. Yes, Fight Club was made into the movie, but the book is better And darker.

No way, I'd never give out a spoiler! What I wrote is mainly the synopsis in my words (nothing you wouldn't learn on Amazon or in the introduction by Rand herself), a brief explanation of Atlas Shrugged vs The Fountainhead and a brief explanation of Objectivism. I have two copies- one for myself with spoilers and one to post on the board But if you are going to read the book and feel it might be too spoilery, then that's ok too I tried to keep Tim and Steve's reviews in mind when I wrote it, so it's about the length and depth of theirs (hopefully).

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk is always a nice, disturbing horrific tale with twists and turns and is in the first person. Have you read Mr. Mercedes, Stephen King's latest? Might be what you are looking for. It is not in the first person though, but there are strong characters in the book and some twists and turns. I can also recommend Horns by Joe Hill. From Amazon on Mr. Mercedes: In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

AH! Another Tom Stoppard fan! Tom Stoppard (Arcadia) Agatha Christie (Witness for the Prosecution) Federico Garcia Lorca (Blood Wedding) Tennessee Williams and, of course, Shakespeare (Love's Labor's Lost is my favorite). And how could I forget Arthur Miller (The Crucible)? -
ROTFL and I'm outside, thanks Frankie I was just going to say maybe you should just look at it like it's meant to be and you are on the right path, then you wrote something similar. Sadly, you could never make a living working in a library here. I'm not sure about other states, but library's struggle here. Librarians hardly get paid and most of them are volunteers. Bookshops too, struggle a lot and close often. I rarely see people read around here too. Although, the other day, I was at the doctors and saw two guys pull up in their car. One goes into the doctors, the other gets out with a book and leans against a post while reading a book- but the funny thing was, besides the reading- he was all decked out in all black, piercings lol couldn't have been more than 20. It was just nice, seeing someone younger and different so engrossed in a book. Wish I could've seen what he was reading! I was dying with curiosity!

ESB is my fav too, in fact, my favorite movie ever (My brother has my original copy). You know they are making Star Wars VII, right? JJ Abrams is directing, due out next December. It is speculated some of the material will be used from the books. The original cast will reprise Han, Leia and Luke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_VII

Yes, but I was thinking by then, I might need a break! I might pick some short stories (maybe the Joe Hill ones) for the next one. Or maybe Burnt Tongues (Chuck Palahniuk).

I'm nervous about starting school. I'm obsessed with my English, constantly thinking I'm wrong, obsessed with looking up words and spelling, putting myself down for not knowing more, etc. I mean, it's only one class, but I am getting cold feet! 10 days to go. My 5 year old will also be starting Kindergarten the same day, I could cry

I read 50%- 75% in 12 Years a Slave today. So I'm almost done, but not having reached my goal of finishing it today. I didn't read as much this read- a- thon as I'd liked- I was at my mom's and don't want to spend the whole time outside reading (too much going on in the house to read).

Divergent / Insurgent / Allegiant - Veronica Roth

Darn! I can never do that Spoiler thing and my response could be a spoiler. Anyway, I agree about the end, but I usually am willing to suspend my disbelief so I bought it -
Yes! Great review! I will probably read this one before The Pact. I've never read anything by her before, but always get recommendations and she is so highly recommended here, I will definitely try her out. But it might have to be next year I'm "booked" for the rest of the year lol

Oh my gosh- you just reminded me! I used to do that all the time in High School! I also like the idea dog-eared pages for favorite quotes and then a marker for the place.

Yes, but does that really prove the table is there? Does it want to be there? How did it become to be there? I'm totally kidding. Thanks so much for reading my review! I appreciate it. And if you ever get to The Fountainhead, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I looked up a thread on here and some people were pretty harsh. I personally, like Ayn Rand and find her views really interesting. I did delete quite a bit from this review lol I didn't want to start a big hoopla. I guess it helps that I don't believe similarly to Rand and existentialism, I can find the other side interesting and a mind challenge... with this book, I just went on with the presumption of Objectivism as a goal for the characters and then enjoyed the arguments for and against.

Haven't been too chatty lately but have been lurking so I just thought I'd chime in with Congrats on the flat and the sauna (wow!) and isn't a dishwasher a total luxury? Prolonged my marriage a few months Anyway, you totally deserve it and I'm glad you are so happy. Working for a library would be a cool job!

Hi, Welcome! Sounds like you like a lot of classic- classics with Poe, Lovecraft, etc. I like Dostoyevsky too, read Crime and Punishment and The Idiot last year. I just finished The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand which was all philosophy, actually. Fiction, with lots of philosophy lol And a tad of a headache. I always get Looking for Alaska recommended to me, so I should put it on my short list. Hope to see you around the Forum! And your English is fine, don't worry What are you reading now?

Divergent / Insurgent / Allegiant - Veronica Roth
Anna Begins replied to Michelle's topic in Children's / Young Adult
That was the worst English ever. So Sorry Most of the time, posters with English not as a native language, convey their meanings and write better than I do. I meant, because of reading Divergent before seeing the movie, I knew so much more of the inner stuff, it made the movie insufficient in my mind. So, I think I am going to watch the movie to The Maze Runner before I read it, so I won't be as disappointed as I was in Divergent. *sigh* I'm just getting nervous over going back to school. I've become manic about my English, over correcting myself, putting myself down, etc. The 13th is going to be a BIG manic day. -
Ohhh- I love bookmarks. But I never used them when I read books. I always used what was handy too- I especially liked old concert tickets I never turned the page corner! I also used to use this weighted pad thing that rested along the bottom pages as you read, to hold the book open on a table.
