  1. It does get good reviews, I just wasn't fond of the main character at all, and she didn't get better in the second book, in my opinion. There's only one way to see if you agree!!! :D

Oh- then Fly Away is the sequel? Hmmm, that makes it more attractive.

  2. I finished Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg last night   I've nearly finished listening to A Far Cry from Kensington by Muriel Spark (really enjoying this) and I started Great Expectations by Charles Dickens today.    :)

How was it? I loved the movie :)

  3. Winter Garden possibly if you enjoyed the war aspect of The Nightingale, Home Front was great too but more modern. Night Road was the first of her I read and very emotional and I want to read it again to see how it stands against The Nightingale now.

Once I start reading again *roll eyes* I will probably check out Home Front first, it sounds like something I normally wouldn't read.

  4. I've not had the best reading year either but like you I am focusing on the great books I have read rather than dwelling over my growing TBR pile! :blush2: I too loved The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah is definitely one of my favourite authors, have you read any of her other books?  :readingtwo:

I don't know how this totally slipped by me!

I've only read The Nightingale, but wow! What a book. I think it's my favorite of the year. What would you recommend for a second? I have samples for Winter Garden and Home Front.

  5. It was only a cheap tablet, about €150. Cheaper than some Kindles. By the time I have the money for either, I'll have the money for both - which is hopefully Friday, payday. Assuming I get paid.

In the  meantime, I've put the Kindle app I had on my tablet onto my phone. Screen's tiny, but my books are there. Might do for a few days! I'm gonna feel like I've read 10 pages for every 1 I do, though! :giggle:

I felt that way when I had a 6 inch Fire I was reading on. It was way to small. I love my Paperwhite ($119). At least you have them on your phone!

  6. My tablet seems to have died, won't turn on or seem to take charge :( Everything I was currently reading was on it. Don't really have any other devices suitable for the Kindle app, so will just have to wait til I can get a new tablet. May read a paper book in the meantime, but not sure what.

Tragedy! Could you at least afford a Kindle? It might be easier than a whole new tablet.

  7. Pyongyang by Guy Delisle (176 pages)

    Graphic novel

This is a great graphic novel about Guy Delisle's two months spent working in North Korea.

From Canada, Guy is an animator sent to North Korea to work on a cartoon. His observations and comments about some of the... "uniqueness" of the country that is known as the Hermit Kingdom are stark but dealt with a chuckling humor. From the mountain high statues of Kim Jong il to the pins every citizen is required to wear over their hearts, the graphic novel was a wonderful approach to telling his story.

Long interested in the goings on of North Korea and not a graphic novel reader, I was pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of this work.

  8. I'm reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, I wanted an easy read; also not often fan fiction appears in a novel at the centre of it.

I just finished Eleanor & Park and it was pretty good, I hope you enjoy Fangirl!

I read the graphic novel, Pyongyang by Guy Delisle today. It was very good and am now waiting for funds to buy some of his others.

Edited to add: I am loving my Paperwhite :) I think it is my sixth Kindle :D

  9. It is so irritating when reviews give away so much (Faber), Amazon is notorious for that. I didn't know Michael Faber stopped writing because his wife died; how sad! I've been meaning to get to Crimson Petal and the White for a really long time- the size daunts me.

It was pretty early for Barbara Kingsolver to be pushing climate change!

  10. There actually seem to be three types - sometimes you can get the pattern printed on fabric, that's what I initially went looking for too! Then there's counted cross stitch, which is done on plain fabric with holes, which I use, so you count the holes and stitch them relative to each other. Then there's totally blank fabric, where you don't even have holes to guide you, and you have to estimate the size of the stitches yourself. That version terrifies me, and I can't see it working for super detailed pictures honestly.

It still sounds really hard! I commend you for doing it!
