  1. Sorry to hear you didn't like it. I'll stay clear of it then, for now. I agree, that does make things easier. The Otherland series does this, I've always thought it was quite a good idea.
  2. x I've heard of these two. Cranford is on my TBR (I have an edition that also includes a short story), The Ragged Trousered Philantropists is on my wishlist.
  3. I'm glad to hear you like it! XD yes that is a problem! Though at least it's better than having nothing to read..
  4. Nice progress, everyone ! Yesterday I didn't spend that much time reading, because I did other things (swimming..) I read: Maeve Binchy - Full House (QuickReads) 50 mins, 117 pages Roald Dahl - James and the Giant Peach 1 h, 156 pages Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito - The Misfortune of Kyon and Koizumi 30 mins, 160 pages Total: 2 h 20 mins, 433 pages EDIT: Kylie, maybe next time .
  5. Awesome haul!! I recently bought my first Agatha Christie book at the charity shop, having never read one, I look forward to reading it and see if I like it. The books look beautiful on your shelf, I love the colours ! For me it depends, sometimes I order them by publication order, series order, sometimes by size, sometimes in the order I bought the books in. Only on rare occasion do I do it by colour. It can look nice though, done by colour, but I find it might be too difficult to find stuff. Especially if the books are part of a series, then I just want them to be in a series order.
  6. Yay read-a-thon! So far I've read one book of 112 pages (Maeve Binchy - Full House (QuickReads). I plan to read some more later today .
  7. Good for you ! It's very warm here today. Gladly our pool is fixed now so if we want, we can take a swim. Yesterday I was too tired to do so, I stayed inside instead where it was cooler than outside (though I did spend some time outside, in the shade). Maybe today I'll go swimming. I've done so several times since the pool got fixed (it'd been broken for a while). The thing is, if the water is a bit cold, it's very difficult for me. It takes me a long time to get into the pool! It's also input, the feel of the water and the temperature, and of course the birds, other people who are outside, etc. It's easiest for me when I'm at a temperature that is comfortable, not too hot, not too cold. Sorry if I'm making you all jaleous with this! I didn't mean to do that . I'm also doing some reading today, because of the read-a-thon, I already finished one book and plan to read some more later (once I'm done with reading the new forum posts etc).
  8. Welcome here ! The Book Thief is on my shelf but I haven't read it yet.
  9. I really like that film! Yesterday we watched Watchmen. It was quite long (we have the Director's Cut Blu-ray) and the first half an hour I was confused but after that I thought it was really good .
  10. Wow, here we do have people trying to sell you something but they've never been in my face or as bad as your experience. It would've really annoyed me too.
  11. I finished reading Delphine de Vigan - No and Me and am now not sure what to read next, since the read-a-thon is tomorrow and so I want to save some shorter reads for tomorrow. I didn't buy any books while I was out shopping yesterday (there wasn't anything that really interested me), but I do plan on buying books if I find something nice while I'm on holidays.
  12. Read-a-thon coming up tomorrow, I'm excited for it. Otherwise, I made a list of everything I want to take with me on holidays. I'm also resting, or trying to at least. I spent some time in the kitchen preparing dinner for tonight.
  13. All of the recent posts sound pretty horrible!
  14. We went shopping yesterday and had a bit of an adventure! First we were shopping for a while, then we took the train back to where I live and upon getting out of the train we realised a bag was missing. It wasn't in the train so we took the train back and spend over an hour trying to find it, in all the places we went to after we'd bought the things in the bag. Eventually, at the last option, they had the bag! I was so happy. It was quite stressful but an adventure as well and I'm really glad we got the bag back in the end! We would've taken more notice of our stuff and where it was, if we hadn't been so tired. To be honest, I'm still tired from the past few days. On Monday we went out for dinner and on Tuesday we went shopping for curtains (our picking didn't take that long, but we had to wait quite some time for the lady to put it all in the computer). I hope to rest a bit in the next few days. @ Talisman That sounds horrible , poor you.
  15. Delphine de Vigan - No and Me Genre: Contemporary fiction, Young-Adult Format: Paperback Pages: 246 Synopsis (GoodReads): FLou Bertignac has an IQ of 160 and a good friend called Lucas, who gets her through the school day. At home her father cries in secret in the bathroom and her mother hasn't been out of the house properly for years. But Lou is about to change her life - and that of her parents - for good, all because of a school project she decides to do about the homeless. Through the project Lou meets No, a teenage girl living on the streets. As their friendship grows, Lou cannot bear that No is still on the streets when she goes back home - even if it is to a home that is saddened and desolate. So she asks her parents if No can come to live with them. To her astonishment, her parents - eventually - agree. No's presence forces Lou and her parents to finally face the sadness that has enveloped them. But No has disruptive as well as positive effects. Can this shaky newfound family continue to live together? My thoughts: I read this book because I wanted something short and easy to read. I bought it recently in a book shop. I hadn't heard a lot about it, but the synopsis sounded interesting and the cover is pretty and blue (blue's my favourite colour). This book was quite good. I really liked Lou. She has some quircks, ie. she does certain experiments. She has a different way of thinking than most people I think. I could really identify with her, for the most part. The story is good and well written, though on occasion it's apparent it's a translation. By that I don't mean the fact that it takes place in Paris or the French names. On occasion there was an actual French word in the sentence for example, or the way that a sentence was written, sounded a bit weird. I quite enjoyed reading a book that takes place in France, it's different from where most of the books I read take place. I've been on holidays to France many times in my childhood. Anyway, I liked the book though I thought the ending could've been better. The book seemed to have a few pacing issues, sometimes a lot would happen quickly and sometimes not much would happen for a while. The characters were nice, especially Lou, but I would've liked more detail for certain characters. I thought Lou was well described but some other characters less so (now I understand they're side characters but still). All in all it's a good read. Rating: **** (7/10)
  16. frankie, I'm sorry to hear about the guy, however I do think it's good that he's upfront about it rather than ignoring you or something. I also prefer to start a relationship from friendship and not go to out on a date with someone I don't know well. In fact, I've never been on a date with someone I don't know well. I have no idea how things go these days, some films would have you believe certain things but I don't believe in that stuff (ie. you have to wait X days to be phoned, I mean, what crap is that). I also believe that if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. You don't need to be desperately looking, it will happen when you don't expect it. You're a really sweet person and I hope one day you'll meet that special person and be together. You deserve that! Don't lose hope .
  17. I've only heard of Sue Grafton, I think. Nice list, good idea !
  18. Nice photos, everyone ! I agree, it's nice to have a face to go with the names.
  19. You're kind of spoiling it there.. I've already seen it but perhaps you could edit your post to add [ spoiler ] tags?
  20. Most of mine have a black spine, though I think I have one (a double copy of something I also have in an omnibus) with a yellow spine. I didn't know the yellow spine meant newer. I also prefer the black spine. Steve, that's pretty cheap !
  21. x Excellent news! I might go and see it in the cinema while I'm on holidays (although it'll be a bit difficult without subtitles). Will have to see how tired I will etc.
  22. Thanks, Peacefield ! You have fun too!

So many nice pictures in this thread ! @ Tesla S I'm glad to hear the comments .
  24. x I hope you enjoy this one! I'm awaiting the paperback release. x x I have a lot of classics, however most of them are on my TBR, so unfortunately I haven't read enough to recommend much (other than Dutch literature, but I don't think you know Dutch?). I loved Charlotte Brontë - Jane Eyre, I didn't like Truman Capote - Breakfast at Tiffany's (though I liked In Cold Blood) and should really read more classics. I also read some children's classics, but don't think that's what you're looking for. I have a lot of classics on my TBR though and I've heard good things about those. But I can't give you a more personal recommendation at this point in time.
  25. x I believe these are the ones I've read, and I'd recommend them too. I have a few more books of the series but I haven't read them yet. I have read other books from the list but I have them in different editions (Dune, Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Time Machine)0. I would recommend all of them. I also have some books from the list on my TBR but in different editions. Some others are on my wishlist.
