I want to read more Science Fiction this year and will probably look at the Masterworks list for

inspiraton, but I may not follow it. I also won't worry about the exact editions of the books.

For some reason on Goodreads they specify the books, should be the Masterwork editions, but I won't be worrying about that.

Postmark Ganymede - Robert Silverberg Short Ebook

Consider the poor mailman of the future. To " Sleet and snow and dead of night" - things that must not keep him from appointed rounds. - Will be added, Sub zero voids, meteors, and planets that won't stay put. Maybe he'll decide six cents an ounce isn't worth it.

"I'm washed up," Preston growled bitterly. "They made a postman out of me. Me - A Postman!"

I liked this, it was a short funny read.

Starman's Quest - Robert Silverberg short ebook

The Lexman space drive gave man the stars, but at a fantastic price. The Fitzgerald contraction meant that a Starman could never live a normal life on earth again.
But not all Starmen like being different. This is Alan Donnell's story.

A slightly longer short that I really enjoyed.

Judas Valley - Robert Silverberg & Randall Garrett short ebook

Why did everybody step off the ship in this strange valley and promtly drop dead?
How could a well equipped corps of tough spacemen become a field of rotting skeletons in this quiet world of peace and contentment.
It was a mystery Peter & Sherri had to solve, if they could live long enough.

Another enjoyable short

Time Out Of Joint - Philip k. dick

How would you feel if solid objects began to dematerialize in front of your very eyes?

When a soft-drinks stand does just that in front of Ragle Gumm he thinks he's having a nervous breakdown. he puts it down to stress. Every day Ragle sends in his entry to the competition in the gazette. Everyday he's a surefire winner. He's a local celebrity, a hero with a position in town to maintain. Despite having no job, Ragle is under pressure. Pressure to win.

But as weird things continue to happen to him, Ragle's anxiety turns to paranoia. He thinks he's the centre of the universe, then that 'They' - whoever 'They' may be - are out to get him. As his desperation grows, he realizes that it's all very well being the centre of the universe, but only if you know which universe.

Now Wait For Last Year - Philip K. Dick 225 Pages

First Gino Molinari was assassinated by a political rival. Then he died of a heart attack. But now he is back, and more vigorous than ever, giving Earth new hope of survival in the war against the alien reegs. But is this really Molinari, or a robant masquerading as Earth's overlord? Whatever the truth, only he can save the solar system - if he can stay alive long enough, or at least not stay dead for too long.

This book has a passing resemblance to The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, but the drugs seem to be less widespread.

I enjoyed this more than Stigmata as there was more concentration on what the characters were doing, rather than everybody being on drugs.

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick 210 Pages

War had left Earth devestated. Through it's ruins, Rick Deckard stalked, in search of the renegade replicants who were his prey.

When he wasn't 'retiring' them, he dreamed of owning the ultimate status symbol - a live animal. Then Rick got his big assignment: to kill 6 Nexus-6 targets, for a huge reward. But things were never that simple, and Rick's life quickly turned into a nightmare kaleidoscope of subterfuge and deceit.

3 Books over 3 Days for about 13 hrs reading

This was the third and final book I read during the January Readathon. I have seen blade runner, but not recently enough to compare the two. I couldn't help picturing some of the actors whilst reading the book.

I enjoyed it.

I was reading through this log and was somehow reminded of this one book. Mac on here recommended it to me a long time ago. And he said just buy the book, don't look at the cover, or read the blurb. But I can't exactly recommend you a book like that, you want to know something about it, right? :D So the book is called Bad Monkeys, and it's by Matt Ruff.

I haven't read it myself yet, and I haven't even acquired a copy yet, but I thought since you are focusing more on sci-fi this year, I thought I'd tell you about the book :)

Oh, and have a great reading year 2014, dex! :)

Ubik - Philip K. Dick 208 pages, 12th - 14th

Glen Runciter is dead,
Or is he?
Someone died in the explosion orchestrated by his business rivals, but even as his funeral is scheduled, his mourning employees receive bewildering messages from their boss. And the world around them is warping and regressing in ways which suggest that their own time is running out. If it hasn't already.

Why are there adverts for Ubik products at the start of every chapter?

'The best way to ask for beer is to sing out Ubik. Made from select hops, choice water, slow aged for perfect flavor, Ubik is the nation's number-one choice in beer. Made only in Cleveland.'

He does keep using the same themes throughout his books, Precog telepaths, Drugs, Technology and Time travel.
It's been quite good so far p.57 p.112. P.151 p.188 p.208 Finished.

I enjoyed reading this book, and found it equally as good as the others I have read, with the exception of palmer eldritch.

I'm still not sure whether to to try some more Pkd or not. I don't fancy valis or others off the masterworks list and am unsure of his other books.

A Maze Of Death - Philip K. Dick 190 pages 15th-18th

When fourteen people arrive to colonize the otherwise uninhabited planet of Delmark-O, they quickly discover that their bizarre new world is more dangerous - and much, much stranger - than they could ever have imagined. The colonists have nothing in common and no idea why they've been sent there. All they know is that there's no way to leave and, one by one, they are being killed...

page 33, 75, 108, 149, 190 Finish

It was similar in some ways to ubik and out of the two books, I thought this was slightly weaker.

Flow, My Tears, the Policeman Said 247 Pages 18th-23rd

Jason Tavener has a glittering TV career and millions of fans, enormous wealth and something close to eternal youth. He is one of a handful of brilliant, beautiful people, the product of top-secret government experiments forty years earlier. In fact, he has everything... Until, inexplicably, all records of him disappear. Suddenly, he is a man with no identity, in a police state where everyone is closely monitored. Can he ever be rich and famous again? Or are those memories just an illusion?

P.24, P.56 P.84 P.106, P128, 140, 156, 200, 211, 221,247 Finish

This is another strange book from Pkd.

Is Jason a real person with an adjusted memory, Is he playing a Vr game or is there really a way to make someone who's known to millions, cease to exist

I enjoyed reading it, but it did have a strange ending.

Both sound delicious!  Very interesting reviews (or synopsis?). :)
