BBC The Big Read Top 100 Books

How many of these have you read? Which do you agree / disagree with?

Obviously nobody listed here yet but is there actually anyone out there who has read the entire list? I'm about halfway through [3 years and counting] and just wondered how much longer I can expect to still be at it [even disregarding all the other terrific books that keep distracting me from my task!] Even a vague idea of how long it has taken someone else would be good haha.

I've finished 55 of them, with one or two others incomplete. I'm unlikely to ever read the full list, not least because several books are by Jacqueline Wilson, and having read a couple of them, that's two too many. (I've no intention of reading any more Terry Pratchett either, but could at least contemplate the prospect if required).

I've only read these 20 (not very impressive) from the list:

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling

To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë

Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë

Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier

The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger

Great Expectations, Charles Dickens

Little Women, Louisa May Alcott

Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell

Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, JK Rowling

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, JK Rowling

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, JK Rowling

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

Anne Of Green Gables, LM Montgomery

The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald

Of Mice And Men, John Steinbeck

Crime And Punishment, Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Memoirs Of A Geisha, Arthur Golden

I Capture The Castle, Dodie Smith

I have these few on my bookshelf:

Emma, Jane Austen

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl

The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett

Bridget Jones's Diary, Helen Fielding

The God Of Small Things, Arundhati Roy

This list is best loved novels from 2003. I wonder if it has changed since. Were all of the Harry Potter books even out then?

I'm a bit surprised that Nighteen Eighty-four beat out the Brontes' in the top ten.

Not long enough by any chance, Kylie's read 49, I've only read 35 and the rest are on my TBR, but this you know. You're just trying to meddle and instigate something. Hmph!

What's even better is that there are only a few books from Frankie's list that don't overlap with mine. :D

Now I'm very curious, I'm going to go and check your list. I feel like a stalker now, since I was the latter one to join the forum! :giggle2:

Edit: Clever girl, you've not listed yours! But going through my list and remembering what I know you've read, it does seem like our lists are freakisly similar :giggle:

Didn't I? Hmm, that's weird. I usually delight in playing with these lists and bolding my books. I'll have to do it later. :)

Numbers 65 and 52 should definitely be a lot higher.

Mort is a fantastic book and really does do Terry Pratchett justice :)

It truly is amazing!

Of mice and Men is even better, it's sad, gripping tale of American migrant workers really moved me :)

BBC I've lost respect for you after seeing that list although I do agree with No.1 on the list :D
