Sad news about Iain Banks

My introduction to Iain M Banks was in a book shop in Guildford in the early nineties, when my brother pointed out a copy of Consider Phlebas.  I'm not sure if I bought my copy then, or shortly afterwards, but I quickly finished that off and then The Player of Games and Use of Weapons in quick succession.  I've not read all of his books, or even all of his science fiction books, but I'd rate Banks as being on a par with the likes of Wells, Wyndham and Orwell for his contribution to British Science Fiction.

He will be missed.

For anyone who hasn't read any of his books, I'd recommend The Crow Road or Espedair Street as starting points (I've not read many of his Culture books I'm afraid). The Wasp Factory is his first and the first I read by him but it's perhaps a little too dark for some and might put new readers off.

The Bridge is also great (once you're into him). I'd perhaps avoid A Song of Stone, The Business and Canal Dreams as none of these are his best works.

Still, he was a great author. He will be sorely missed.
