  1. Punishment ~ Anne Holt book description from Amazon A serial killer is on the loose - a killer of the worst kind. Abducting children and murdering them in an undetectable way that confounds the police, he then returns the child's body to the mother with a desperately cruel note: You Got What You Deserved. It is a perplexing and terrible case, and Police Superintendent Adam Stubo is the unlucky man in charge of finding the killer. In desperation he recruits legal researcher Johanne Vik, a woman with an extensive knowledge and understanding of criminal history. So far the killer has abducted three children, but one child has not yet been returned to her mother. Is there a chance she is still alive ? This suspenseful and sophisticated crime novel is the first in a brand-new series, which has already been a huge bestseller in Europe My Thoughts This was my first Anne Holt book, I got it during the 12 days of kindle. At first I found reading the book hard purely because of the child abduction storyline, however I stuck with it and the pages flew by. I thought the character of Stubo, the police superintendent was very good he seemed real and I'll be interested in how he develops in this series of books. I wasn't so keen on the Johanne Vik character to begin with, but as I learned more of her history I liked her more. A slightly disappointing end I thought but overall a quick, easy and enjoyable read.
  2. Thanks Charm Hope you're still going strong through your library.
  3. The Quest for Anna Klein ~ Thomas H Cook book description from Amazom: Extraordinary breakout novel from Thomas H. Cook. By turns a spy thriller, a war story, a saga of betrayal, vengeance and obsessive love, and the story of a lifelong quest resolved, finally, by a series of mind-wrenching plot twists. my thoughts: This is the second book that I've read from this author, the first, Red Leaves was brilliant, fast paced and hard to put down! This book though was totally different, it was I thought much slower paced and I found it slightly harder to get into. The characters and the atmosphere were very good and well written and once I'd gotten into the story I really enjoyed it. Soon after the horror of 9/11 an old man decides to tell the story of his life back in 1939. The story unfolds of how he met Anna Klein and gradually became involved in a plot trying to stop Hitler, the consequences of this and how his life changes as a result. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing as the story is gradually told. Although the story is told in flashbacks from present day back to 1939 I found it easy to follow. I'll look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
  4. I just finished The Penal Colony this morning, really enjoyed it too. Now I'm reading The Final Murder ~ Anne Holt, I'm a quarter of the way through and enjoying it.

  7. I had this dilemma last night. Whether to spend 77p on A Study in Scarlet when I have it on my shelf (very feint, tiny print though!) then I accidently clicked buy! Decision made.
  8. I finished The Quest for Anna Klein - Thomas H Cook and started Rosie's War - Rosemary Say. Both of these were bargains I bought in the 12 days of kindle!
  9. Also read in 2011 The Redeemer - Jo Nesbo enjoyed this. Rosemary's Baby - Ira Levin a good, quick, rather chilling story! The Stepford Wives - Ira Levin another quick, easy read. The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman didn't think this would be my sort of book, but I was wrong - I loved it! Wrong Man Running - Alan Hruska an OK thriller. 2011 I've read some good books this year I just haven't read as many as I'd hoped! About 33 in all though. Think I'll aim for 50 in 2012.
  10. I know what you mean I was the same with Red leaves! So when I saw The Quest for Anna Klein which he'd also written, on the 12 days of kindle I downloaded it and started reading! I do like his writing style.
  11. Me too - I need help I think!! I've downloaded 12 since Christmas eve, I just can't say no to those bargains I've also read, Wrong Man Running - Alan Hruska, a pretty good thriller and I'm half way through The Quest for Anna Klein - Thomas H Cook. Enjoying this so far.
  12. I began the day with Rosemary's Baby On my way to work I saw The Man from Beijing and walked by The Hanging shed to avoid The Stepford Wives but I made sure to stop at The redbreast In the office, my boss said, Wicked and sent me to research The Girl who kicked The Hornets Nest At lunch with Bone&Cane I noticed The Devils Star under Red Leaves then went back to my desk, Les Miserables Later, on the journey home, I bought The Wine of Angels because I have Midwinter of the Spirit then settling down for the evening, I picked up All The Pretty Girls and studied The Girl who played with Fire before saying goodnight to The help
  13. Finished reading The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman I loved it and I'll definately be reading more books by him.
  14. Me too! I've started it all ready and it's looking good. It must be a good read then When I get home from work the first thing I do is check the daily deal, there's been some good books on offer hasn't there? My first Neil Gaiman as well and I've got a feeling it won't be the last.
  15. It certainly was - I was right there with rosemary!
  16. I read this and checked the book out, I'd never heard of it! but it looks great, so now I've been to Amazon and ordered a copy for myself I might go back and order another as a present for someone Thanks!!
  17. Just finished Rosemary's Baby - Ira levin A quick read but I was totally gripped, even though I've seen the film and knew what was going to happen.
  18. I've bought a couple of books through the Daily Deal and like you I'm keeping a regular check on it, there have been some good bargains on there. I hope they keep it going as well. I've just taken the risk and ordered my son a kindle for Christmas, he hasn't asked for one but he's a keen reader and always carries his book with him so keeping my fingers crossed he likes it! I guess if he doesn't there's always Ebay!!
  19. I've nearly finished The Redeemer - Jo Nesbo I've enjoyed it but (my fault, not the books!) it's taken too long to read, which has spoilt the book a bit
  20. My chosen book arrived today! The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon if it's half as good as Shadow of the Wind I'll be happy Thank you
  21. Well done Kylie! I'm slowly making my way through The Redeemer - Jo Nesbo I'm enjoying it but I've been feeling too tired to read very much so it's slow going!
  22. Sleep. Wake up. Who's he? Who's she!? Aghh!! Before I go to Sleep - S J Watson Happy families - shock, denial, suspicion - happy families? Red Leaves - Thomas H Cook
  23. An update on the books I've read since I was last here! Nemisis - Jo Nesbo Book Descriptionfrom Amazon Grainy CCTV footage shows a man walking into a bank and putting a gun to a cashier's head. He tells her to count to twenty-five. When he doesn’t get his money in time, she is executed. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case. While Harry’s girlfriend is away in Russia, an old flame gets in touch. He goes to dinner at her house and wakes up at home with no memory of the past twelve hours. The same morning the girl is found shot dead in her bed. Then Harry begins to receive threatening e-mails. Is someone trying to frame him for this unexplained death? Meanwhile the bank robberies continue with unparalleled savagery. Gripping and surprising, Nemesis is a thriller by one of the biggest stars of Scandinavian crime fiction. I really enjoyed this follow up to The Redbreast, plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing and I think Harry Hole is a brilliant character. 8/10 The Devils Star - Jo Nesbo Book Descriptionfrom Amazon A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star – a pentagram, the devil’s star. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work. A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands, and the five-pointed devil’s star is key to solving the riddle. Once again really enjoyed this the 3rd in the Harry Hole series. A gripping thriller with plenty of twists to keep me guessing. This book ties up some of the loose ends from the 1st 2 books, so best read in order! I'm looking forward to reading more from Jo Nesbo. 9/10 Carved in Bone - Jefferson Bass Book Descriptionfrom Amazon A woman's corpse lies hidden in a cave in the mountains of East Tennessee. Undiscovered for thirty years, her body has been transformed into a near-perfect mummy. Clueless, the local police enlist the help of Dr Bill Brockton, renowned anthropologist and founder of the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Research Facility - the Body Farm - where human corpses are left to the elements, and every manner of decay is fully explored for the sake of science and the cause of justice. The body has been found in Cooke County, a remote community that's clannish, insular and distrustful of outsiders. When Brockton's autopsy discloses an explosive secret, old wounds are reopened and feuds rekindled. As the powerful and uncooperative sheriff and his inept deputy threaten to derail Brockton's investigations, even Brockton, after years surrounded by death and decay, is baffled by this case unfolding in a unique environment, where nothing is quite what it seems. A quick easy mystery, with plenty of twists in it, lots of bodies as well so not for the squeamish. 7/10 Before I Go To Sleep - S J Watson Book Descriptionfrom Amazon 'As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...' An excellent psychological thriller, couldn't put it down! 9/10 Red Leaves - Thomas H CookFrom the Inside Flap Eric Moore has reason to be happy. He has a prosperous business, a comfortable home, a stable family life in a quiet town. Then, on an ordinary night, his teenage son Keith is asked to babysit Amy Giordano, the eight-year-old daughter of a neighbouring family. The next morning Amy is missing. Suddenly Eric is one of the stricken parents he has seen on television, professing faith in his child's innocence. As the police investigation increasingly focuses on Keith, Eric must counsel his son, find him a lawyer, protect him from the community's steadily growing suspicion. Except that Eric is not so sure his son is innocent. This is the first book I've read by this author infact I hadn't even heard of him before! I only downloaded Red Leaves because it had such a good review on here. I thought it was absolutely amazing, beautifully written and very believable. The book looks at the impact a young girls disappearance has on the family of the teenage boy who is under suspicion of taking her. I read this in a day, I couldn't put it down because I was desperate to know how it turned out. I'll definately be looking for more from this author. 10/10
