The last film I saw was Les Miserables - fantastic film, I cried nearly all the way through and the songs were in my head for weeks afterwards

Booked an eye appointment for Saturday. This will be my last year for free glasses!
How did you manage to get free glasses? I only get my eyes tested free, but have to buy my glasses.

Alfie Boe CD "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables

I don't know if this counts in this section, but did anyone watch Dancing on the Edge on BBC2 which concluded last week. It was about the rise of jazz music in the 30s but also had themes of racial prejudice running through it and its consequences. I found it rivetting and really enjoyed the music and themes running through the acting.

Thanks everyone for your welcome. One of the reasons for my return is I lead a book group and thought this site would be a good way of finding books suitable for my group.

Hi supergran! Nice to see you back again.
In the top right of the forum window, you'll see your username with a downward pointing arrow next to it. Click on your user name, then select "My Settings" from the menu that appears. On the left hand side of the next screen, click on the third option down, "Email & Password", and you'll be able to change your password there.
Thanks for your help Chesil, I remember your name .

I have read Blackberry Wine, Five Quarters of an Orange and Lollipop Shoes. I haven't read Chocolat but saw the film so was able to follow Lollipop Shoes ok. I think my favourite is Five Quarters of an Orange.

Such a good thread!!
For me it would have to be Pride and Prejudice. I know it's the most obvious love story but that's probably because it's the greatest.
I've read it a million times and have the BBC adaptation on DVD which I watch every other month. I just love it!
I agree about P&P and I also watch the DVD regularly and reread the book frequently. I would also nominate "Gone With the Wind" for the power and passion of the lovestory and the history of the American Civil War.

Hello all long time since I visited this site and how it has changed. To be honest I am a bit lost. I had to change my password with your help but I need to change it to something I will remember can you help? Hope there are some people here who remember me, it will be good to get back to discussing books again.

I've heard Lee Child is good but haven't read anything by him. Do they need to be read in any particular order?
I have read quite a lot of Lee Child books and try to keep up with them as he writes them. They are excellent stories, well written and pacey, so you are on the edge of your seat sometimes. I recommend Esther.

It is an unusually warm night in August, but I'm shivering badly as I stand on the substantial gray stone terrace outside my apartment.

I have just typed out my list of every single book I have that I haven't yet read. 45 of them!!!! I didn't think there were that many (holds head in hand). That means I can't buy any more books for ages!!!!

I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a keeping a Book Journal. I've seen several on the market at varying prices and different styles. Any recommendations?
You could open a Word document as a book journal, that is what I have done.

A famous opening line....
"Last night I Dreamt I went to Manderley again" - Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

I never watched the programme, but when I heard the winner, well words fail me. How can anyone think that song will win? It hasn't got a prayer. And will someone please tell me why these girl singers these days, always sing as if they have a stomach ache??
Eurovision is dominated by east European countries these days and yes it is political. The only song I have ever liked by ALw is "Memory" from Cats. It was the only show of his that I liked as well. All his songs sound the same to me. I think he just rehashes the same tunes all the time.

I'd be Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Married to Mr. Darcy? Yes please!!!
I'll fight you for him!!!
-
Well who else but Elizabeth Bennett? Just think of Darcy!!!

I agree it`s clever, but I really don`t like it!
I thought it was hilarious, can't wait to see it again lol

That is good news and bad news what has happened to our Bill and who will take his place?
I hope they choose Chris Packham to take his place, he would be ideal.

I recommend The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

I did check it out and my nearest meeting is 15 miles away. Do you know if you can do it online? Maybe we could try that
i bet you can do it on line. You can certainly do Rosemary Conley's plan on line.

I loved the film, didn't realise it was based on a book though. Will have to add that to my list of wanted books.

Robert Goddard. He is such a clever writer, I would love to discuss his storylines and how he develops them

My favourite song at the moment is "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables and sung by Alfie Boe. I also like John Rutter music which we sing in the choir I go too. People may remember he composed one of the pieces sung by the choir at the wedding of Prince William and Katherine.
