vinay87
Hello there! Just noticed Terry Brooks on your interest list and thought I'd pop in and talk about him. He starts out really slow and it becomes highly clichéd Tolkienesque fantasy but his later books show more promise. However, he doesn't improve much beyond a limit, I used to love his books and found them really entertaining, but once I discovered other fantasy writers I felt Brooks had a lot left to learn. As you might already know, you can start with The Sword of Shannara. His books are mostly standalone, grouped together in threes or fours. The groups tend to become continuous towards the later parts of the story and he has a few recurring characters in all of them. His "wise old man", Allanon, is really interesting but even so his novelty wears out in time. On another note, do you read much fantasy? Devi
Oh thank you! I had actually asked about him in another thread specifically about authors, but sadly no reply. I read pretty much any genre, but fantasy would have to be my favourite. I am looking for new fantasy authors, if you have any suggestions on any! I have all of Raymond e feist and robin hobb books, r.e.f. is winding up his series this year I believe, so I will need some new books soon! Karsa Orlong
Hi Devi I must admit that I stayed away from replying to your other post about Brooks because I wouldn't have had anything good to say! I don't know which authors you've already tried, but if you like Feist and Hobb you might like Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams, Peter V Brett, Tim Powers and, of course, David Eddings. I would recommend David Gemmell to anyone. If you wanted to try something with a more mature approach then there's the likes of Joe Abercrombie, China Mieville, George RR Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay. If you liked those, then I would start banging my Steven Erikson drum. This is probably something to be avoided, cos once I start I won't stop

I find the best word to go by is word of mouth! I have heard people say Brooks is more targeted at a young teens rather than adults, and going via your and vinays post, it would seem like its true. I shall definitely check out those authors you mentioned, I had stopped reading for a time there while I was working, but now that I can no longer work, I have time to go back to my reading again! Devi
oh and on David Eddings, I have seen a few of his books around and are embarresssed to say, I never thought to pick one up
Karsa Orlong
Well Eddings is definitely aimed at a younger audience. I read them when I was in my teens and I loved every one of them.
pickle
Agree with Karsa he is definitely aimed at the younger audience but I did love his books. As for Terry Brooks I never really got into him, I did read quite a few but they seemed to skip around so much and I didn't really enjoy his style, I think one of his series which was aimed at an older audience was The Knight of the Word series which was ok. Tad Williams is good though I really enjoyed The Dragon Bone Chair series. I think most of the properly defined fantasy I read though was a long time ago so I am going to have to think hard about anymore I recommend as there are bound to be newer better authors out there. Although I have read all of China Mieville's work I think certainly read a lot of them, and they are great hard work but great.
Karsa Orlong
Oh, and I'd better mention Jack Vance, otherwise Vodkafan will kill me ...
Devi
Thanks guys for the names! I am on my second book of the current saga I am reading, so I will definitely be doing some research on the authors you have suggested as soon as I am done with this book. As you can see, I have added them to my earlier post list hehe.
vinay87
If there is no mention of Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time on this thread, it would be blasphemy. Do read the Wheel of Time, it is the biggest Fantasy epic out there. RJ died in 2007 before he could complete it, he left the series with the 11th book and Brandon Sanderson was called on the finish the 12th book which had to be split into 3. The 12th and 13th books are by far some of the best books in that series, and although the series did lag in the middle, the wait is definitely worth it. The 14th book is due early this November so if what you say is true about Feist, then two of the biggest fantasy writers will have ended their decade spanning career simultaneously. I only picked up Feist in November, reading through Magician, Prince of the Blood, The King's Buccaneer, the Conclave of Shadows series and the first book in the Darkwar trilogy. I have yet to read the Krondor series and the other series, which I forget the name of. Feist is definitely refreshing to read, I especially love Nakor, that little imp! By way of suggestions, I agree with the David Eddings recommendation, if you love Feist, you will adore Eddings. The series are complete and you might find it interesting to know he wrote most of it with his wife, Leigh Eddings. Both of them have passed on sadly. The Fantasy genre is headed for an entirely new generation. I'd recommend you staying away from GRR Martin since he isn't likely to finish his series in the next decade. I stopped after his fourth book and won't bother returning to the series until it is finished or Martin's dead.
Devi
I love Nakor! He is one of my favourite characters in the series. I love all his books, and all the not essentials to main story novels too. The mistress of the empire trilogy was especially fantastic in my opinion, he wrote it with Janny Wurts. I went through and wrote my own recommended reading order, which has worked rather well with the story flowing nicely. I only assume Feist is winding up the series, based on what's going on in the demonwar saga. I have also heard that he wants to finish the series, but whether he will write other books or retire, who knows. I will definitely be checking out the wheel of time. Karsa Orlong
Have you read any of Janny Wurts's own books, Devi? Her 'Wars of Light and Shadow' is well regarded. I thought of another couple the other day: Scott Lynch and Adrian Tchaikovsky. The latter wasn't to my tastes, but his books seem to be pretty popular I may read the Wheel of Time at some point, too, as it's one I've steered clear of until now (for the same reasons Vinay says he'd stay away from George Martin, and also people putting me off by saying it gets very boring). I have the first two books on the shelf
Devi
No I haven't actually, funnily enough I never really thought to look up any of janny wurts books! Silly isn't it lol. I will definitely add those two authors to the list as well! I was avoiding the wheel of time series for the same reasons too, but at the same time I am still curious. I think it will definitely be a library borrow for it. I love being here, I feel like I am being opened up to a whole new world of books! I felt lost in book shops until now, odd of me I know. vinay87
Well since the WoT is finished, (the final book is done btw, just in the prepublishing stage), there's no more reason to wait! I know I'm pitching a difficult read, but trust me, tWoT is worth it!
Devi
I think my list will explode soon! I have found a lot more books among the threads here that I wish to read, and I haven't even added them yet hehe. Half the fun is making the list for me though, and checking off books read! Will definitely check out at least the first book of WoT, to see if I would like to continue on with it.
