Hyzenthlay Posted January 28, 2012 Share Posted January 28, 2012 What kind of sci-fi have you enjoyed before? Ender's Game by Orson Scott Carr is of course the archetypal first contact book. It's got the elements you were looking for with added depth. The thing is, it's hard to find a straight-forward sci-fi book.. they all seem to have a dark undercurrent of sorts. Sounds to me like what you're looking for is a good space western story. I'm not entirely well-versed in that genre, with the lovely exception of Firefly. But that's a TV show. For galaxy spanning space opera try Peter F. Hamilton or Alastair Reynolds.
