davidtye Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I would love to read a good Sci Fi book as I haven't found one for a long time as Sci Fantasy seems to have taken over. Anyone recommend a book or two? Good old spaceships, lasers, acventure etc you know the kind of thing! Quote
Hyzenthlay Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 What kind of sci-fi have you enjoyed before? Ender's Game by Orson Scott Carr is of course the archetypal first contact book. It's got the elements you were looking for with added depth. The thing is, it's hard to find a straight-forward sci-fi book.. they all seem to have a dark undercurrent of sorts. Sounds to me like what you're looking for is a good space western story. I'm not entirely well-versed in that genre, with the lovely exception of Firefly. But that's a TV show. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 If you're looking for action, adventure, big guns and mad sentient robots, then Neal Asher's your man. For galaxy spanning space opera try Peter F. Hamilton or Alastair Reynolds. But rather than list all my faves again, have a look at the list I posted here: http://www.bookclubf...post__p__283614 If you are looking for something like Firefly, try Chris Wooding's 'Tales of the Ketty Jay' series, starting with Retribution Falls: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Retribution-Falls-Tales-Ketty-Jay/dp/0575085169/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327745521&sr=8-1 Quote
AlysonofBathe Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I'd suggest Asimov's Foundation series as well, excellent space opera. Quote
Stiggy Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 I'm a big fan of Larry Niven. He write great sic-fi books. Like 'Building Harlequin's Moon' great book! Quote
Timstar Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Also recommend Arthur C. Clarke, either his Odyssey series or Rama series. Quote
vodkafan Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Jack Vance. Slaves Of The Klau (Gold And Iron) or the Dragon Masters or the Alastor Cluster series or the Demon Princes series. They are all more "spacey" than some of his others. Ya can't go wrong with Jack Quote
AshDeal Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 I would recommend Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card! A great read! Quote
