Sorry Frankie but your last statement started me in hysterical insane laughter that I could not suppress. The idea of you not buying books took me to the edge of madness please don't do that again. I don't even believe you will be able to get rid of any of the books you singled out. Hey I have an idea. Some of the Finnish translation books that you were going to get rid of but liked the covers....why don't you frame the covers maybe together like in a set and hang them on the wall? You said they were mostly charity books so no financial agony.

I am appalled by the lack of faith you have in me! I'll have you know that as soon as I can buy another book (that is, when I've read 4 TBR books or when have lost 0,5 kilo in weight), I'm taking some of the selected books with me to a secondhand bookstore, and will get some other book in return. In pristine condition, and an original title. I'll have you know! I should probably take pictures of the trip. Me shaking hands with the bookstore owner, having replaced the titles between us. Do I also need to have him sign a document, guaranteeing that I left the books behind?? Tut tut, VF.

:giggle:

I have no idea what that is

Is it like Neil Diamond's Mr Bojangles?

I have no idea what that ^ is

Don't get rid of any books that are beloved to you frankie, you'll only regret it. It sounds like it's not many so finding space for them wouldn't be a problem. Only get rid of books you don't care three straws for.

I know what you mean about being picky regarding books for your bookshelves. I tend not to keep the old broken down copies I buy at charity shops unless they're favourites .. I just throw them back at the shop (they've learnt to duck now when they see me coming ) but it's still a great way of buying books that you're not sure are going to be keepers. Try not to make any rash decisions .. I wish I'd kept all the original Enid's that I read ... I have a great fondness for the covers even though they were a bit naff. Getting hold of those now is not so easy (being antiques like me) Good luck with the clearout though .. you'll probably feel better once you've offloaded all those books and rearranged all your favourites. It's nice to look at your shelves and see all your favourites .. you don't want to be disturbed by any errant Madame Bovary's (I'm not highlighting her .. she doesn't deserve it)

That Bosisto's stuff works wonders .. like magic

As I was writing my posts about the books I shall be getting rid of, I realised I can never part from my copy of Finnish Misery (:giggle:), and I also want to keep my Jane Austen. The Bosisto's worked miracles on P&P and I do love the cover so. Eventhough 'Elizabeth' looks a lot more like Jane :D But it's beautiful anyways.

It wasn't the space really that was the biggest issue. I guess I was just feeling like a hoarder, and I wanted to go through all my books to see which I could get rid of. Books that always stare at me, wantingly, and whom I have no intention of reading in the near future. I promise, all the books that I will be giving away are ones that I probably won't remember owning in the first place. What's more important is that I want to be a lot pickier in the future. My bookcases shall be looking fine in a year or two.

Oh, and believe me, MB was chucked out ages ago  But you must've known that!

Totally. Several times in the last year or two I've found myself wanting to re-read a book I'd got rid of. So naturally I had to buy them again

Well I bet you appreciate the second buys a lot more so no harm done :giggle:

I wish I had room for a big ass bookcase

There there. :empathy: Your giant friend might be kind enough to show you where such bookcases are for sale. You will also need him to carry it for you.

They are mere pocketbooks for me dear

:( But surely you appreciate pocketbooks as well?

When you take your big-ass books over to VF's bookcase, you can take your doggy (aww! So cute!) so the tiny Finn can take the tiny dog for a walk. Did you put the dog there on purpose for the photo?

Wow, your books have scrubbed up really nicely! I bet your place and your books smell really good now.

I swear I didn't plant the doggy there! You remember Donnie the Australian Kelpie? He goes to bed with me every night, we read books and then cuddle up for our beauty sleep. And then he comes with me to my 'livingroom' to guard me in the days. He's adorable. He was sitting on my table, looking at what I was doing with Bosisto's when I took the picture.

Well, the place definitely smells of Bosisto's :D When I went out yesterday and later came back, the whole apartment reeked of it  Good lord!

Is it the mistress's influence? I must admit when I see photos of her lovely library .. I want to clear all the books off my bookshelves and start again. The fact that Kylie has that lovely room full of them .. all neat and tidy .. like a real library .. oh the green eyed monster rears up and starts thrashing about .. in fact his tail did knock some of my books on the floor so he's helping me making a start :D

Oh, and believe me, MB was chucked out ages ago. But you must've known that!

Yes .. but I use it as a collective noun now for all terrible books :D The scary thing is, I think I still have mine somewhere :o but as I never see it it doesn't offend me. Woe betide it though when it falls into my path .. the retribution will be terrible.

Haha, I had a great mental image of you doing a 'drive-by', with Allan at the wheel, no doubt.

Oh, eucalyptus oil IS magic. It's so versatile, and smells soooo good. Ooh! I just glanced wistfully around my desk (I'm at work) and noticed that I still have an empty bottle here! Woohoo! *inhales deeply* Mmmm...there's only a slight whiff about it now, but it'll keep me going for a bit.

That's 'good lord!' in a good way, right? ;) Aww, you and Donnie are so cute. How nice that he goes everywhere with you. :)

Aww, you're so kind! I'd like to take full credit, but I doubt it.

Maybe I should take photos of the current state of my shelves - you wouldn't be so jealous then. Jasper has knocked books off here and there, so there are books at angles books pushed in so you can't see them properly, and books scattered on the floor *sigh* And the last time I reorganised my books, I didn't finish lining them all up neatly, so it just looks messy in general.

Those pics I occasionally post of my shelves are taken after hours of tidying! And there is usually a pile of junk just out of sight of the camera, where I've piled everything that was in the way. I wish my shelves would stay nice all the time, but it just doesn't seem to happen! Mostly because I keep buying more books...I hope I haven't burst any bubbles...:)

Yes, it really is. :)

Hello peoples!

My laptop is slowly but surely dying, so I'm now resorting to my old desktop comp and it's slow, irrational, the screen doesn't fit the whole view so I need to scroll left and right, the keyboard is just god-awful etc. So I might not be as frequent a poster from now on :( Yesterday I was trying to reply to Kylie's reading blog, using the multiquote thingy and the comp did a nasty twice, deleting all I'd written patiently on this crappy keyboard! So I need to use Word doc with everything if I multiquote and that's going to slow me down and annoy the life out of me.

I'll have to reply to your other posts later, but I can't help but reply to chaliepud's message: VA VA WOOOOM!!!:wub:

Oh dear, that hit the spot!! :blush2::giggle2: Very nice, I think the beard suits him well!! Thank you for posting :giggle2:

And I'm another one who has had to buy lots of books again after I got rid of them :( That's my excuse for my hoarding!

I know it sounds sacrilegious, but I can thoroughly recommend the big clear out as therapy! We (OH and I) reached a stage before Christmas where we decided that enough was enough - we couldn't buy any more bookcases (we're up to the equivalent of about 15 Billy bookcases) and the house was starting to feel cluttered. So, about 300 or so books have gone: a mixture of 'have reads' which neither of us rated that highly, or TBRs that, frankly, we're probably never going to get around to. Included in those were books which I was marginal about, but decided that if I really wanted to read or reread, I could buy the Kindle version (we checked that a cheap version was available!). So, whilst it was done with some considerable anguish, we now don't have any stacks, have a wee bit of space to add books if needed, and feel considerably more liberated! Yes, I've bought some books since, but most of them have been e-books.

I've just put about 20 books, all but a couple of which I'd already read, in a charity bag for the NSPCC. They'll be going on Monday, along with a bunc of CDs and DVDs. It's generated a bit of shelf space - a bit, not a lot!

Steve what DVDs you giving away? If there are any films I want for my collection I will happily pay some for them and postage.....

Nothing worth getting excited about tbh, James. Two films on blu-ray ('Ironclad' and 'Monsters') and a couple of seasons of Spooks I never watched (they're still shrink-wrapped!).

Hello peoples!

Opera was giving me a headache yesterday so I installed the ever so dependable Firefox on my computer and a few things seem to be working faster and better now and I thought I might give this multiquoting another chance now, see if it's doable now! Cross your fingers, peoples!!

heeheehee .. what a great image that conjures up

Very business-like perhaps! Until you see my woollen, self-knitted hat with the foxy ears :D

Oh wow, already I'm experiencing the fine qualities of Firefox! Ctrl+V works just fine, backspacing works just fine as well as enter, and random things aren't deleted... Oh my, consider this frankie's comeback!

Is it the mistress's influence? I must admit when I see photos of her lovely library .. I want to clear all the books off my bookshelves and start again. The fact that Kylie has that lovely room full of them .. all neat and tidy .. like a real library .. oh the green eyed monster rears up and starts thrashing about .. in fact his tail did knock some of my books on the floor so he's helping me making a start

I wouldn't consider it the mistress's influence. I would consider it as the influence of my own shabby library. I've grown sick and tired of looking at some of the ugly, non-inspiring hardbacks. The cover art industry isn't exactly booming over here. Whenever I'm doing online book browsing, I swoon over the beautiful paperback covers

Yes .. but I use it as a collective noun now for all terrible books The scary thing is, I think I still have mine somewhere but as I never see it it doesn't offend me. Woe betide it though when it falls into my path .. the retribution will be terrible.

Haha, clever! :D But why on earth would you keep your copy. Hunt it down and take it to an evil charityshop, one whose goals you don't condone. Like, Crimes against Canines Foundation. Nobody's gonna buy the book if they have any literary sense, and therefore the evil operation will have to close down!

Your apartment is now Kylie's ideal place on earth

And still she's nowhere to be found! Hmph! (And my Bosisto's is running out =( )

In triplicate please !

I'm glad you added 'please', now you stand a chance :giggle:

That's 'good lord!' in a good way, right?

Well it's not a bad smell per se, but I confess, I always associate it with being sick (not vomiting, but having a flu). The only eucalyptus-related products I've known throughout my life are the kind of cough drop mints which one might eat if their throat is sore.

Noooooooooooooooo!

Oh Jänet, don't worry! :empathy: I now have fully functional Firefox and I'm doing great with it! I don't even mind the awful keyboard, I'm getting used to it. I promise I'll be a more frequent poster yet again.

You are quite right about Madame Bovary. :giggle: You must be one helluva hoarder. Do you suppose I might've seen you on TV? We have these documentaries about obsessive-compulsive people on TV quite frequently these days, and one of the most favorite disorder amongst them peoples is hoarding and I've seen quite a few such shows. Hey, was it you, that one time, when there was this hot but disorganized lady, sitting and typing on her laptop, they were on some bookish forum, and all her walls were covered with bookcases and books and her family only had one room for them, no, I think it was a closet, where they were to stay and keep quiet? And the lady kept on stumbling on different copies of MB, cussing rather violently at them, and then throwing them forcefully across the room? Was it YOU?? :o

I know it sounds sacrilegious, but I can thoroughly recommend the big clear out as therapy!

I, for one, don't think it sounds sacrilegious at all, I agree it can be therapeutic! I'm really happy with the choices I've made, now I just need to take real action and actually haul the books to the charityshop and the library. As they are 1,5 km away I'm not going to be able to take them all, they'd be too heavy to carry around. Hm maybe I could borrow a friend's snow sled and pull the books with me to the shop... Now there's an idea!

We (OH and I) reached a stage before Christmas where we decided that enough was enough - we couldn't buy any more bookcases (we're up to the equivalent of about 15 Billy bookcases) and the house was starting to feel cluttered. 15 Billy bookcases :o Wow! But I can imagine how you feel like, eventhough I'm getting rid of maybe 50 books, it's still two cardboard boxes of books that would stand out and get in the way and I do live in a student flat.

I've just put about 20 books, all but a couple of which I'd already read, in a charity bag for the NSPCC. They'll be going on Monday, along with a bunc of CDs and DVDs. It's generated a bit of shelf space - a bit, not a lot!

So, let's go bookshopping ;)

Steve what DVDs you giving away? If there are any films I want for my collection I will happily pay some for them and postage.....

Speaking of DVDs, I've watched Muriel's Wedding! I really liked it, but haven't had a heart to send it back to you yet, James! Because it's been so nasty cold I've been fearful the DVD might get damaged by the cold. It's getting a bit warmer now so I might be able to send it to you someday soon :)

We had a big clear out last year Frankie and I felt better for it, it was getting to the point, I thought my books and dvds were multiplying by themselves

Haha, those naughty fellas :D I'm certainly going to make the most of the clear out. It's been useful in other ways too: I was going through my Rory Drawer yesterday, considering getting rid of Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood, the Khaled Hosseini book (not the Kite Runner but the other one) and some other book that I thought I'd never get to reading. I read their blurbs to see why I'd bought them the first place, thinking they'd be really boring now. But I was intrigued and now I'm thinking I should bump them up on my TBR pile!

The problem I've had with the Hosseini book is that it's in Swedish. I got it at a flea market for like 20cnt so thought 'never mind, it's cheap!'. But now I've already managed to read one book in Swedish this year so I think it would be really beneficial if I were to read it now that things are coming back to me.

And the Alias Grace sounded really intriguing! I once started to read it but couldn't get into it. Then I always thought it was a boring book and nothing I'd be interested in, but now I re-read the blurb and discovered that it's actually based on a true story. Kind of like Crippen and the Kate Summerscale book. So I'm really curious about it now.

Posted (edited)

I took another look at my bookcases yesterday and found 8 books I'm not so sure about and I was wondering if any of you had any opinions on them, pro or con?

- Anthony Powell: A Dance to the Music of Time (I got this because the blurb sounded like fun and then I discovered that it's on the 1001 Books list. A closer look at the copy shows, however, that my copy is the second installment in the series. Which I didn't know about until now :D So it's a goner!)

- Henry James: The Bostonians (I really don't know about this one, I remember the not so very positive reviews on James's other novel in the January Reading Circle...)

- Henry James: The Europeans (see above)

- Somerset Maugham: Theatre (I'm curious about Maugham but I already have one or two of his novels and they are on some reading challenge lists, this one isn't, at least as far as I know. And the blurb doesn't sound that intriguing)

- Henryk Sienkiewicz: Quo Vadis (I know I could borrow this from the library or from my Dad. But knowing that I never might. If I owned it, it might encourage me to actually read it)

- Philip K. Dick: The Transmigration of Timothy Archer (bleh?)

- Evelyn Waugh: Brideshead Revisited (now, I know some of you are going to accuse me of blasphemy and sacrilege because of this. But I've tried reading it, it's so boring! And I've grown to despise the copy. And I'm thinking it might be the fault of the translation. I might enjoy the English original a lot more? Or is this an excuse? Hehe?)

- Sebastien Japrisot: A Very Long Engagement (Actually, I'm already having second thoughts with this one, I skim-read a few pages and it seemed like a lovely read. This I might keep!)

Edit: Actually, I'm thinking I'll take the most well-preserved copies to a secondhand bookshop and see if I can get some money out of them. But, could I use that money to acquire a secondhand English titles? Or would that sort of... defeat the purpose?

A Very Long Engagement is one of my all-time favourite reads (the film is one of my favourites too, but with Audrey Tautou it is already at a distinct advantage!). It's an absolutely stonking mystery based on a WW1 incident where the fiancee of the heroine is court-martialled and shot for self-inflicting a wound to try and get sent back from the trenches - but something is not quite right. There are loads of twists and turns throughout, and the ending is a cracker. If I was ever going to clear out unread books, it would NOT be this one!!

I've started Dance to the Music of Time, and have definitely enjoyed what I've read so far, but I can see it being a bit marmitey. I'm not a fan of Evelyn Waugh, so don't regard disposing of Brideshead Revisited as sacrilegious at all! Personally, I have so far found Henry James rewarding if difficult: don't try reading him in bed at night, as you need to be fully awake to handle him! A lot of modern readers find his language too convoluted and demanding to enjoy, but I like a book you can get your teeth into. It's the spare, lean, grim prose of some 20th century writers that I can't handle.

I'd already decided to keep my copy of the book but you've now assured me that I've done a good choice, thanks :smile2: I do want to watch the movie some day. I really love Amelie, Tautou is brilliant in it and I never tire of watching the movie. :)

I definitely think Dance to the Music of Time should be started with the first novel and not the second, the one I own  And I think it would be better to read it in English, I think they have a copy in the library.

I also think that Henry James I should try in English. So I'm still going to get rid of my Finnish copies of his novels.

(I wrote this on Thursday, after getting home from an outing. As I was sending the post, there was some error so I quickly copied the text and saved it as a Word Doc. And then it turned out I couldn’t get back online for almost two days. But here it is now:)

One event, two stories:

What the hell just happened?? :o:blush: I went to a secondhand bookshop, intending to get rid of 13 books, taking the money and running for dear life. Instead, the shop keeper said he wouldn't give me any money, but he'd give me credit for the books that I could use now or later :( 'Oh crap', I thought. I went to browse, found one book that interested me, then looked at the DVDs and figured I might as well spend the money on some movie or TV series. Then I went to the register, and the shop keeper didn't even accept all my books but I had to take four of them back! And then I noticed another book on the counter that interested me and I wanted that as well, so in the end I got rid of only 9 books AND spent 5,5e of my own money!! :(

vs.

Score!!! I went a secondhand bookshop today and the shopkeeper took 9 out of the 13 books I was offering, giving me an incredible 17e credit! Wohoo! I found Nausea by Sartre, it's not on my wishlist but it's something I've always wanted to read. Then it seemed I couldn't find anything else so I went to browse the DVD section and SCORE!! I found the complete second season of Criminal Minds! Which I've been wanting to buy for ages but I haven't found it anywhere in the shops. As I was taking my items to the register, and I was waiting for the shopkeeper to find the discs for the CM, I happened to notice an English copy of Hunter S. Thompson's Kingdom of Fear. Score!!!! And I only had to pay a little extra to get all this. Awesome. And on my way home I saw this most beautiful and enthusiastic Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Awesome times :smile2:

Wow that sounds like great work frankie!!

Duck Tollers are one of my favourite breeds, fab looking and fab workers too (I like to work my dogs). They're definitely in my maybe lust for my next puppy... :-)

Duck Tollers are one of my favourite breeds, fab looking and fab workers too (I like to work my dogs). They're definitely in my maybe lust for my next puppy... :-)

It wasn't until a few years ago that I even learned about Tollers! There was a toller in my neighborhood, and I'd always thought they were just funny colored golden retrievers, but when I noticed the neighbors dog I did some investigating on the Internet and found out it's a whole other breed. It's Nova Scotia's Retriever in Finnish, but I kept seeing it referred to 'tolleri' as well and I always wondered where that came from. When I was writing that post above, I had to google the English name and there I found out about the tolling :D They are beautiful aren't they? The ones I've come across (not that many) have all seemed friendly, enthusiastic and like they need to have something intellectually stimulating to keep them happy :)

My neighbor's dog was just such a delight to watch! Her owner had a terrible time trying to get her to walk right by her side on a leash, the dog was all over the place and giddy and excited and she couldn't get her to obey. But the owner's young daughter, who was maybe 8-9 years old had no problems. With her the toller was calm and never tried to drag her anywhere. It was so curious!

She even went to the snow castle the little girl had built with a few friends in the neighborhood. She was a fearless doggy, she was! :) In and out she went. I was so sad to notice one day they'd moved away :(

Edit: Oh sorry chaliepud, I got so carried away that I almost forgot to ask! Are you planning on getting a new pup in the near future? I think a toller would make a great addition to your already existing pack :) And remember, people demand pics if you are going to get a new doggy! ;):giggle:
