Freewheeling Andy Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Died yesterday: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6293005.stm I've only read The Soccer War of his books, but it's a great book, and he was a fascinating author. I must read Imperium. Anyone else read any? Quote

pontalba Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I'm ashamed to say I haven't even heard of him. RIP, Mr Kapuscinski. Well don't be ashamed, I had not heard of him either. Unfortunately we cannot keep up with everyone everywhere, even if we want to. But he does sound like a fascinating man, and I wish I had heard of him and read his articles, especially on Haile Selassie. What a wonderfully fulfilled life he led! RIP Just ordered his book Emperor. Quote
Icecream Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Exactly Pontalba. I haven't either. I might just have a look at what he's done.. EDIT: He does look good. Very accomplished and interesting. He must have had a lot of knowledge to write those things. What a life to have. Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted January 25, 2007 Author Posted January 25, 2007 Don't feel bad at all. I only discovered him a couple of years ago, through a website recommendation. I partly posted this in the hope that other people might find the name and see some interesting subjects. The Soccer War is astonishing, just for the number of revolutions and civil wars he accidentally finds himself in. There's one particular scene where he's walking around pitch dark Honduras trying to find his hotel in the middle of an air raid. Quote
Renniemist Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Thanks for bringing him to our attention Andy. I also had never heard of him. It sounds as if he had a fascinating life. Ryszard Kapuscinski, RIP. I will be reading something of his in the near future. Quote
Kenny_Shovel Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Sorry to hear this, I've read a couple of books by Kapuscinski. This is an old review I did of 'The Emperor': Quote
