Today is International Women's Day, and I have two questions for you......

1) Who is your favourite female author (and why) ?

&

2) Who is your favourite writer of women, as in which author is great at depicting women in their books?

He's looking good ~ and in both outfits! :D

I realised that I hadn't answered my own questions. I will start by saying that my answers are after a little bit of thinking, rather than extensive concetrated thought.

1) One of my favourite women writers is Carol O'Connell. She has a way of describing people that immediately gives me not only a physical sense of them, but a genuine feeling of knowing them. 'Judas Child' is a stand alone novel by her that is both compelling and harrowing and is the only book that I have read that when I reached the last page I turned straight to the first page to read it again.

2) Carol O'Connell could very easily fit my answer to the second question, but having given her my Q1 accolade, I will try and think of someone else.....This one is trickier to answer for me, as I love the women found in Karin Slaughter's book series, but I equally adore Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde. Then there is the the women found in Jeffrey Deaver's works, or indeed those of Manda Scott. Nope, I currently cannot answer Q2 and will have to return.

1. Unfortunately, I can't pick just one! I think my favorite female authors are Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Sylvia Plath, and Amy Tan.

2. My favorite writer of women would have to be...Sylvia Plath, mainly for her ability to capture the ambivalence and inner struggle felt by those women who are trying to find their place in the world, especially when the world is telling them what they should be.

Questions are too hard :giggle2:

Too many spring to mind but one who has been featured on here would be Linda Gillard. And we have followed her progress and wish her well wtih book No.4.

I also like Jodi Picoult.

Q2 is proving more difficult to answer though...have to think about it.

  1. My favourite female author would have to be Ali Smith. I think she is an incredibly good writer, and her book Girl Meets Boy is the most joyous piece of writing I've ever read.
  2. The best writer of women, for me, has to be Barbara Pym. Her books capture incredibly believable female characters in a wonderfully elegant and engaging writing style.

Ooh what good questions.

1. My favourite female author (amongst many special mentions) is Sarah-Kate Lynch. I'm a little biased because she is a New Zealand author but she writes these incredible books that are part chick-lit, part mystical and always have food in them! My favourite book she has written Blessed Are the Cheesemakers is about a couple of cheesemakers who have a number of girls working on their farm. The girls always turn out to be in need of help and that's just what they get. Someone described it as being "in the spirit of Chocolat.." which it is reasonably accurate. It has that magical feel.

2. Favourite writer of women.... I will have to think on that one as I'm trying to think of some really memorable female characters. Maybe Margaret Mitchell in Gone With the Wind just because of her depictions of Scarlet and Melanie showing the two different sides of what a woman's character can be.

How could I have forgotten Linda? Rose in EG, Marianne and Louisa in SG and the women of ALB ~ fabulously written, and so very real. Again, an author who easily fits both Questions.

My favourite female is Margaret Atwood, she is such a diverse writer, she can write about men and woman brilliantly, easy identifiable characters, etc :)

I found these quite hard to answer actually, but here goes.

1) Who is your favourite female author (and why)?

Having looked at my bookshelves, it seems the majority of the books I read are by men, but I have read most of Emily Barr's books I would probably say her. She writes strong female characters. They aren't chick-lit, I would say there is more depth to them than that, but they are easy reads.

2) Who is your favourite writer of women, as in which author is great at depicting women in their books?

He's only written two books so far (where are you...?) but I would have to say Khaled Hosseini. Although he's a man, he writes so well from a woman's perspective - it's like he's got inside his female characters in A Thousand Splendid Suns and understands them so well. Come on, Mr Hosseini - let's have another! :smile2:

My two favourite female authors would have to be Margaret Atwood and Maggie O'Farrell. I just adore their writing style, the way they weave several elements of a story together so that you're not sure where the connection lies, but by the end it all comes together.

The second question is a bit harder to answer, and I'll have to think on it.
