Inver
Just spread myself a sesame seed bagel with philie cream cheese and was wondering why there is a hole in the bagel..?
Weave
The hole in the center of the bagel ensures that it bakes and boils evenly. Because its dough is fairly dense, the hole in the center allows for water and heat to circulate around the most surface area. Your bagel sounds delicious
Chrissy
They have a hole in the centre so that I can hook them onto my broom handle when I am out on an evening flight!
Raven
Bagels have holes in the middle to make them less fattening.
Vladd
The holes are the best bit. I always leave them until last.
pickle
The holes make them like giant hula hoops
Kidsmum
Because if they didn't have holes they'd just be plain old rolls.

SueK
Hah, you guys crack me up. I suppose you are also going to say that doughnuts with holes are less fattening too. Back to bagels though I like mine filled with smoked salmon and cream cheese and a slice or two of cucumber. Mmmmm.
Raven
Now don't be silly, doughnuts have holes so you can stack lots of them on your fingers! Back to bagels, I like pastrami, jarlsberg cheese, mustard and sliced dill pickle - very nice.
pontalba
Toasted bagels dripping with butter and peanut butter. /sigh/ Or cream cheese...onion and chive cream cheese.
chesilbeach
I've never eaten a bagel - can you tell me what's special about them? They just look like bread rolls with a hole in the middle to me!

For me at least, it's the consistency, dense, but tender. I either toast them, or cook in a toaster oven till the insides are a golden color.. They're okay, nothing that special. They are better toasted though, I find they can be a little stodgy if they are not.
