Nero Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Hope you have many interesting reads this year Quote
Nollaig Posted April 10, 2011 Author Posted April 10, 2011 And the award for lamest book thread of the year goes to - me! I've a lot going on so I'm barely reading. No mojo. Getting through a few the last few days though. And most are in trilogies, so I might actually get some numbers up. Quote
Ben Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Hey Noll, hoping your reading picks up soon. I'm not having the best of years for reading either, hopefully it picks up for us both. Quote
Nollaig Posted July 23, 2011 Author Posted July 23, 2011 I think once 2012 hits I'm just going to have to forget this year ever happened. Slowly slogging through some books at the moment, but definitely still no mojo and am taking my time with them. Currently reading: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton It's Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by some one whose name I forget And in theory, I'm reading the first Game of Thrones book but it's been a while since I picked that up to be honest! Nollaig Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 I saw your mojo Nollaig he was in Mcdonalds Well now that doesn't surprise me in the least given my craving for a chicken burger the last few days! Sneaky little so and so isn't he! Quote
Charm Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Aw Noll, I hope you're mojo comes back soon. If I see it I'll give it a good talking to and tell it to get home and busy quick smart! Quote
Ben Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 (edited) Hey you, hope that mojo kicks back into gear soon; the Harry Potter books always seem like they do the trick for me, so here's hoping. Edited July 24, 2011 by Ben Quote
Nollaig Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 Thanks Charm and Ben Just finished reading the first Harry Potter, which I was dreading more than any except Goblet Of Fire (I hated the movie) simply because I've seen the Philosopher's Stone movie so many times and despite what people consistently tell me, there was literally not an iota in the book that wasn't in the film. I also didn't enjoy how scattered it seemed to be at times, and how completely stupid the things were that the characters did at times. However, just like with the films, I'm told the books get progressively better, so I'm going to keep reading. Quote
vodkafan Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Nollaig, here is an out-of-left-field suggestion; I looked at your book list (and 2009 too) and it looked a bit "heavy". If your mojo keeps going awol maybe you should just try something completely different? Have you read The Help? It really is a feel good book and the film is due out very soon. Also I know you are up for a bit of fantasy, can I suggest The Llyonesse trilogy by Jack Vance? It is sufficiently "different" to satisfy your eclectic tastes I feel. I gave Bookjumper a Jack Vance book (The Dying Earth) and she quite enjoyed it, they really are a treat. Quote

I gave Bookjumper a Jack Vance book (The Dying Earth) and she quite enjoyed it, they really are a treat. That's actually a very good suggestion Vodkafan, and I do try to read a variety of things (lighter books definitely help when I'm not feeling like reading, and I tend to lean a bit towards chick lit in those instances!) but recently it's not actually anything to do with the books, I've just had a really crappy few months and haven't been good for much of anything, which is also why I've been very absent round the forum. :3 Hoping to cop myself on a bit now, at least as a far as the forum goes. The reading will come with time. I did read a whole bunch of X-Men comics throughout June which I thoroughly enjoyed! Quote
Nollaig Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Started doing a bit of reading again! I finished The Spook's Apprentice, the first book in the Wardstone Chronicles by Joseph Delaney, and LOVED it! I made a thread here in case anyone else has read these books. I'll definitely be getting the second one. I've also just started When God Was A Rabbit, by Sarah Winman. I'm about 80 pages in and so far enjoying it. In reviews I'd read, I'd heard that the author 'tries to pack too much story in', but to be honest, while I agree it's chocablock with story, I love it! I think it's awesome. I'm also reading the first Various book by Steve Augarde - I caught the name somewhere on this forum (and am about to go hunting for it!) and so far am absolutely loving it. Really enjoyable, lovely Enid Blyton feel to the setting and not entirely unlikeable fantasy species. After this, I have some more books I managed to pick up quite cheap on Saturday - two books by a G. P. Taylor (the better-sounding of which turned out to have poor reviews on Amazon, but what can you do!) - Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box, which is the first in a trilogy it seems. I mostly got it because it was buy 1 get 1 free and the cover was nice. The one I liked the sound of but had poor reviews is Wormwood - apparently a partial sequel to an earlier book which I haven't read, and also a Christian allegory (I can rarely resist those!) Either way, the two books were €2.40 total so I can hardly complain. Both hardback too! I got another one, called Selina Penaluna by Jan Page, which I DEFINITELY only picked up to complete my second set of buy 1 get 1 free, but it's got loads of 5 star reviews on Amazon, so maybe it will turn out to be good!
