Thanks Poppyshake! I only managed to get one Vintage: Richard Yates' Cold Spring Harbor, which is especially good news because I have 4 other Vintage Yates books. :)

I've got one Richard Yates Vintage too .... 'Revolutionary Road' and I enjoyed it, so am interested to hear what you make of the others (have you read the one's you already owned?)

No, I don't have enough room on my Billy's. :( I just had to box up my Trixie Belden and Baby-Sitter's Club books and put them in another room. Hopefully this will free up enough space, but I can move some reference books downstairs and/or pinch a spare shelf to add in to one of the bookcases. In short: I'll make 'em fit somehow! biggrin.gif

Ah well, you can't blame a girl for trying  To be honest I'm having trouble squeezing my own books in here but that's more to do with bad planning. I've started looking at my big pieces of furniture with an eye to replacing them with bookshelves .. nothing is safe here except books/bookcases/shelves .. and comfy chairs :D

Wow that it definately an impressive haul! Out of those I think I have only read the Bill Bryson Books and Daphne du Maurier: Jamaica Inn which is one my favourites. Happy reading!

I hope you get a chance to read all of the Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld books Kylie, I enjoyed 'No Human Involved' it had one of my favourite characters in it, Jaime Vegas (but in all honesty, its really difficult to choose a favourite characters because all the women in the books are great in their own way). I saw some of the Lemony Snicket books a few weeks ago, they didn't have the whole series but the covers were gorgeous! (in hindsight, I should have bought them) :)

Don't apologise for listing the books you've read! I love to hear people's thoughts on individual books. It makes me feel better for buying them all.

This was said to Weave but I just have to comment that I do hope you mean it, because I'll be doing a lot of commenting soon :giggle:

The Lemony Snicket books are all the gorgeous hardcover editions. I couldn't believe my luck. I've heard great things about them.

If they're anything like the Finnish editions they truly are beautiful! I've read the first two books in the series, it was ages ago but I liked them and wouldn't mind reading further but something else came up. I really liked the movie as well, although I think the movie includes the first three novels so if you're going to watch the movie hold on til you've read the first three :)

I guess it was a bit less fun because Frankie and my other friend weren't there to share the excitement with me.

My Mum (who is newly into reading) came with me though and she bought about 20 books, which was great. About half of them are Jeffery Deaver books.

Awww :empathy: If it helps, I was totally there with you in spirit! I can't believe it's now been 6 months since the last book fair. I'm so jealous you get to go there everytime. It was one of the most excellent experiences :smile2:

I'm so proud of your Mum :D Hehe now she was doing all the Deaver grabbing like I was the last time, I bet she showed no mercy to the other book browsers :giggle2: How did she like the book fair overall? Do you think she might be going with you next time?

And now the best part, commenting on your book haul!! :exc:

Kelley Armstrong: No Humans Involved - I hope you enjoy this series, eventhough that turned out to be the 7th book on it. I've got the first 2-3 books, I hope it turns out great!

Muriel Barbery: The Elegance of the Hedgehog (1001) - I've also got this one, I hear it's supposed to be excellent! It's not on my edition of 1001 Books though, you have the later edition

Richard Brautigan: Sombrero Fallout - Hehe Brautigan, a quirky hippie author

Italo Calvino - I'm so happy you found so many Calvinos, I know how you've taken a fancy to his book lately!

Peter Carey: Bliss - Yay for finding Peter Carey novels!!

Peter Cary: Illywhacker - Ditto!

Pearl Cleage: What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day (Rory) - This must be on the latest Rory list found? I can't remember having ever seen the title.

Michael Cunningham: The Hours (1001, 701) - on my TBR, is supposed to be good!

Esther Freud: Hideous Kinky (1001) - Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this, I don't know what it's about but the title's stuck in my mind and I can never find a copy anywhere

Stephen Fry: Paperweight - Wohoo for Fry!!

Knut Hamsun: Hunger (1001, 501) - I'm really curious about this one, I always see it in the library shelves and know it's on a list and should read

Tove Jansson: Finn Family Moomintroll - Yay, I know you've been wanting to read these for a while now.

Lois Lowry: Anastasia Krupnik - I'm totally biased but I'm sooo excited you found so many Anastasia! Woooo!!

Norman Mailer: The Naked and the Dead - Good find, I remember you wanted to find this when I mentioned I'd bought it at a charityshop

Mary McCarthy: The Group - Awesome, it's on the Rory list, I remember Rory reading this. I hope it's good, I also have it on my TBR

Irene Nemirovsky: Le Bal - Hehe I recognise this one!

David Nicholls: One Day - I'm curious to hear how you like this one, I've heard some great things about this one but also some negative reviews, I'm interested in reading it

Terry Pratchett: A Hat Full of Sky - Yay for Pratchett!

Francois Rabelais: Gargantua and Pantagruel - Wow, that's one of the really old ones in the 1001 Books list, I don't know if it's on your edition. Jealous!! (Just remembered you have all the editions)

WG Sebald: Austerlitz - Also on my edition of 1001 Books, I keep seeing this in the library and think I should read it. I think I've heard some good things about it, and I think it must be on some other reading list as well

Jonathan Swift: A Tale of a Tub - I'm really curious about this one. On the 1001 Books list

Sarah Waters: The Little Stranger - An excellent find!!

Irvine Welsh: Porno - I'm so jealous!

Scott Westerfeld: Peeps - This author rings a bell, isn't he the one who's written the Uglies series? Is it one of the novels or a stand alone?

Non-Fiction

Ambrose Bierce: Devil's Dictionary - The title sounds really interesting haha!

Melvyn Bragg: The Adventure of English - Sounds interesting

Julian Burnside: Wordwatching - Ditto

David Crystal: How Language Works - Ditto

Joan Didion: The Year of Magical Thinking - I'm happy you found this, I know you've wanted it

Dr Spencer Johnson: Who Moved My Cheese? - A Rory title!

Robert M Pirsig: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - I've heard mixed reviews about this one, but want to read, it's on my hippie books list from the Cult Fiction book

Mary Roach: Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife - Oh bloody hell Kylie, I'm soooo jealous

New Editions (to replace books I already own)

Bill Bryson: Made in America - Yay!

Bill Bryson: Notes from a Big Country - Ditto!

Edit: Nasty and hateful Moomins link removed!

Yay! Thanks for the comments, Frankie!

I'll comment on your comments later, but I just checked out that link...are those people for real? I only skimmed it a bit because reading things like makes me terrified (that there are actually people like that in the world). *shudders*

Here's hoping I don't turn to satan when I read the Moomintroll books. rolleyes.gif

Here's hoping I don't turn to satan when I read the Moomintroll books.

A bit after sending you my last post I took another look at the thread and now I'm not 100% sure if it's a real forum or a hoax forum, but be sure that even if that one turns out to be fake, there are people like that in the world. The Westboro Baptist Church, for example, is known for those kinds of things, although I'm not sure they've targeted the Moomins in particular. I'm sickened by people like that but because I've come into contact with those kinds of webpages for a while now I can't sometimes help but laugh. It's so effing bizarre. Eventhough it's not really funny at all, because it's the reality for some people.

I hope your reading of the Moomins is a safe, good kind. I give you a Finnish blessing :friends3::readingtwo::friends3: There you go!

Edit: Have now found out landoverbaptist.net is a spoof site!

It's OK, Frankie. Forewarned is forearmed. Unfortunately I don't think it is a hoax forum. :(

ETA: Oh, and I'm not sure that your Finnish blessing counts for much. Don't they also say Finns are evil on that forum? (Of course, I'm joking. The blessing of my favourite Finn is all I need. :))

Don't apologise for listing the books you've read! I love to hear people's thoughts on individual books. It makes me feel better for buying them all. I was thrilled to find the Neil Gaiman book; it was in brand-new condition and it matches my other Neil Gaiman books. I never thought I'd be lucky enough to find the Morris Gleitzman books. I remembered that you had read them and thought highly of them. I've been curious about P&P&Zombies for a while, and I was really happy to find The Little Stranger. It was one of the main Sarah Waters books I'd been wanting and hadn't been lucky enough to find it at other book fairs.

I forgot to say Kylie :) I am so pleased your copy of 'Fragile Things' was brand new condition, I enjoyed it, I can't recommend 'Once & Then' by Morris Gleitzman highly enough, amazingly written, they will tug at your heart strings. :friends3:

No Frankie. the sane must be warned!!!! Aren't they such scary people though? And they call themselves Christians?

*The Biggest Of Sighs*

They call themselves Christians alright  It's amazing what people will and can do in the name of [insert choice of deity].

It's OK, Frankie. Forewarned is forearmed. Unfortunately I don't think it is a hoax forum. :(

Hehehe yep Finns are evil and nasty. You can see evidence here. (Yes, I'm outraged by that, but I've seen the link so many times I can only laugh at it now)

Ah yes, I've now discovered that it's a fake forum, so may we all rest in peace. Phew! Source says: "Landover Baptist is a well-known spoof site which takes mighty swipes at religion but doesn't clearly indicate to the unwary that all of its articles are humor pieces".

Another great haul for the Australian Queen of Books!

And since you like to see what other people think about the books you've bought ...

Kelley Armstrong: No Humans Involved - Probably my favourite Women of the Otherworld book!

Muriel Barbery: The Elegance of the Hedgehog (1001) - I did like it, but with reservations - can't wait to see what you think of it

Alan Bradley: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie - on my wishlist thanks to peacefield

Michel Faber: The Fire Gospel - Loved this - very thought provoking

Sebastian Faulks: Birdsong (1001, 701, 501) - on my TBR pile

Esther Freud: Hideous Kinky (1001) - really liked this one but I think some of her other books are even better

Morris Gleitzman: Once - absolutely loved it

Monica Lewycka: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian - good fun read - perfect for a lazy day

Irene Nemirovsky: Le Bal - want to get this one, but have loved the couple of her books I have read

Lemony Snicket books - great kids books, nicely sinister and creepy but funny too!

It might be worth adding that disclaimer to your original post, I was getting quite angry there for a mo!

Oh that is good news!!! Although I think you'd only have to spend a little while on line to find a real version of such a site.

Moomins aren't satantic ~ phew!

But what about the Finns? Are they evil or not? :P

I'm letting you guys find out for yourselves, I'm biased :P

Done! :)

Kylie, I just realised that it's April soon, have you been thinking about reading the two FTBC books before next Tuesday? I've borrowed The Man Who Loved Children from the library but haven't gotten into it yet, I still have The Fry Chronicles to finish and I want to re-read A Home at the End of the World for the April reading circle. I can't even remember what the other book was.

That is an insane amount of books! (More than I would buy in five years!).

All I can say is you must have a very well paid job!

Not really, no. Books are my only vice. The money would be much better spent (some would say) going towards my mortgage, but I blow a big raspberry to those people.

I also try not to think about how much money I'm spending when I'm at the book fair. I just check out the damage later (oh my!) and worry about it then. :D Believe it or not, I'm usually quite responsible with money.

That book haul just turned you into my hero - I have a lot to learn from you lol!!! I serously need to up my game in the buying books stakes

 I'm not sure that you should be viewing me as a hero (I'm flattered though!) I do get rather anxious sometimes when I look at all my unread books.

I've got one Richard Yates Vintage too .... 'Revolutionary Road' and I enjoyed it, so am interested to hear what you make of the others (have you read the one's you already owned?)

Ah well, you can't blame a girl for trying  To be honest I'm having trouble squeezing my own books in here but that's more to do with bad planning. I haven't read any of my Yates books yet. :( I also realised last night that I bought the Vintage edition of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. I can't believe I forgot to mention that when I was so thrilled to find it! I already have a copy of it but it has a movie tie-in cover which is hideous. I've been refusing to read the book until I could find a nicer copy. My collection of Angela Carter books is coming along nicely now. I have around 5 or 6 of them. :)

I say get rid of everything that is necessary to your comfort and replace them with bookshelves! I might be making another trip to IKEA this week to pick up another small bookcase.

Unfortunately I think you're right, Chrissy. :( I have to admit, that's a very good joke forum. The fact that it was carried on for so long, and didn't just stop with the first post.

But what about the Finns? Are they evil or not? :P

They're not too bad, Chrissy. Once you remove all the axes from their vicinity, they're quite placid and friendly. :)

Kelley Armstrong: No Humans Involved - Probably my favourite Women of the Otherworld book!

Thanks Claire!

Between you and Weave both loving that Armstrong book so much, I'm a bit disappointed that I have to wait to read the first six before I can get to this one. I swear, I even opened it to see if it was part of a series, but I couldn't find anything that said so, so I just hoped that it was a standalone book.

I'm expecting The Elegance of the Hedgehog to be a light read. Is that correct? I must admit that half the books I buy I know absolutely nothing about. I just buy them on other people's recommendations. Glad to hear you loved Faber. I had really hoped I would find Under the Skin, but I was happy enough to find this one.

What other Esther Freud books would you recommend?

I'm letting you guys find out for yourselves, I'm biased :P

I've already found out for myself! :o

No, there's not a chance I'll be able to read them before the show airs. I only tend to read the books if I already have them on my TBR pile.

There was a special on last night with Jennifer interviewing Ken Follett. I watched it but was only half interested because I haven't read any of his books yet. I saw in the 100 books thread that you've read one of them (Pillars of the Earth, I think?) What did you think of it?
