This is a form of "reading around the world" challenge. I was inspired by the book I got through BCF's Secret Santa last Christmas (2009, that is..), which was "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. I decided to count the country where the writer was born, and I found a list of UN member states and decided that was to be my list of countries.

Sorry, I can't help with the above, I'm afraid. I've picked up two books for my world challenge without knowing the author - one was really good but I'm struggling with my current read.

 

You're doing very well with this challenge - if it's okay I will peruse your books to see if I fancy anything for my own challenge.

" Die Teufelsbibel" by Richard Dübell- a German writer. This is apparently the first in a trilogy. The Devil's bible is hidden in a monastary, and to keep it hidden there is a lot of blood and mayhem and ruthless people with their own motivations. Now, there was a love story too, and that kept me reading.

Added a book for Russia, one in a series featuring Russian police officer Anastasia Kamenskaja by Alexandra Marinina. I honestly thought I'd read them all, but not this one. And there it was, in the Trusted Local Library no less, and me walking past it for who knows how many times, thinking I'd read it. Well, now I have.

Sara, looks like you're doing great on this challenge! (Far better than me with mine, lol). I searched for ages for a book by an Andoran author - didn't find one, so have left it in the hopes that one will be published by the time I get back to it. Good luck with finishing it!

Is that Andora in Italy, or the country of Andorra? If the latter, then I believe Michèle Gazier is Andorran, although she writes in French and there don't seem to be English translations.

 

Ramon Villeró is another, but I can't find any books by him! Like you, I will ignore Andorra for my World Challenge for now too - there are plenty of other countries to be going on with!

I read "After dark" by Haruki Murakami last week, and not until today I thought of the empty space in my list for Japan. Well, now the list is updated again.

Added a book for Croatia, fables about Eastern European history by Slavenka Drakulic, called "Katt I Warszawa" in Swedish. I believe that at least some of the fables are the same as in "A guided tour through the Museum of Communism: Fables.."

Very readable, may even lead to me seeking out other books by the author.

Nothing much has happened with this challenge in a while.. but now we have an entry for Kyrgyzstan. Granted the author was born in the Soviet Union, but in the area that later became Kyrgyzstan. "Face to face" by Chyngyz Aitmatov. This story was a little rewritten after the fall of the Soviet union, and it's that version of it I've read. Not bad at all, a short novel about the wife of a man who deserted from the army in the second world war.

I read a book that qualifies as an entry for Lebanon. "Samarkand" by Amin Maalouf. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy the book, the historic facts were vaguely interesting, but other than that - not for me. I thought it would be fun, the adventures of Omar Khayyams verses up until the day they were put in a safe on the Titanic.

I don't think I did say very much about "After Dark". It was an OK book, I do enjoy Murakami.

Another book read that can be added to this challenge. "Buying a fishing rod for my grandfather" by Gao Xingjian. This is a collection of short stories, some enjoyable and others not so much. They appear to be written in the beginning and middle of the 1980's. I liked the one written about a civil servant who gets lost on a lonely mountain road in Tibet, and also one where a man writes a letter in his head to a girl he knew in his youth.

Proud to add a book for Zimbabwe, "An Elegy for Easterly", a collection of short stories by Petina Gappah. The collected short stories gave the impression of a choir, where each voice descibed their part of something whole, perhaps of Zimbabwe.

I haven't given up on my challenge! For Canada: "The Penelopiad" by Margaret Atwood. The impression it left was a somwhat lightweight book, not what I would have expected.

Hungary: Liquidation by Imre Kertész. This isn't a fun book, but it's a well written book and I enjoyed it. I have read some of his books before, and don't know how I didn't think of him until now for my challenge.
