Thief of Always by Clive Barker. The Holiday House is built by owner/architect. House is a central character I believe. Just a thought.

Have you tried reading 'Mortal Engines' by Phillip Reeve?

it's set in the future where towns have been mounted on wheels, as there is no more vegetation left. it's a really exciting and overall enthralling book, i would reccomend it. the main character is from a guild of engineers/ architects.
