lauraloves Posted June 22, 2010 Author Posted June 22, 2010 No Moon Tonight - Don Charlwood Synopsis - A Bomber Command classic depicting the deep feelings associated with the human cost of the air war in World War II. This is the breathtaking story of a wartime bomber crew facing the hazards of bombing strongly defended targets. A navigator with the RAAF based at Elsham Wolds, Charlwood writes sympathetically and understandingly of the hopes and fears of the crews as squadron losses mounted my thoughts - ive read several books lately about the second world war bomber crews, but this is the first book that i have read from the point of veiw of an austrailian navigator that was fighting alongside the raf. the descriptions of the crews not returning but were very poingant and also the desciptions of a girl that he met aswell were lovely. lauraloves Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Andrew Flintoff The Biography Synopsis - Andrew Flintoff is the most exciting talent in world cricket today, the kind of player who comes along once in a generation. Named Man of the Series during the epic Ashes success of 2005, his powerful stroke play, aggressive fast bowling, brilliant slip-catching and enjoyment of the game made him a pivotal member of the winning team. This amazing book traces the progress of "Freddie" from schoolboy prodigy to adult international star. As well as an outstanding sportsman, Freddie is revealed as intelligent man whose conscience would not have let him participate in the controversial tour of Zimbabwe, and a devoted husband and father. My Thoughts - I got really into cricket during the ashes that England won and got quite interested in Freddie Flintoff. i got this book ages ago i got 3 for Quote
lauraloves Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 Sharon Osborne - Unauthorized, uncensored - understood. My thoughts - this is an unauthorised biography of sharon osborne. i thought that is was very moving considering what she has been through in her life. the cancer, her husband and childrens drug problems. a very good read that i would highly recommend. lauraloves Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 it was a really good read, really interesting read, i had no idea they had so much going on in their lives. Quote
lauraloves Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 William Shakespeare - A Midsummer Night's Dream this was the first Shakespeare play that i had read since i studied Hamlet at A level. i was a bit apprehensive as i thought i might struggle a bit, but it was ok. i did have to read a lot slower than i normally do and keep going over some parts of it again though. i did find it confusing with the two girls Hermia and Helena and i kept getting muddled up between the two. a very enjoyable read and i would definitly read more shakespeare again. Ben Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 We performed A Midsummer Night's Dream in Primary School many years ago in Year 6, and I enjoyed it immensely. I played the part of Puck, and I remember being happy because it was a part loads of people applied for. Glad you enjoyed it. Quote
lauraloves Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 The Roman Treasure Mystery - Malcolm Saville Synopsis - Lucy woke suddenly, her heart thumping with excitement. something strange - and frightning - was going on. she wriggled out of her sleeping bag, and crept outside the tent. the cottage was clear in the moonlight . . . and standing by the window was a mysterious, shrouded figure clothed all in white. then suddenly Terry started to bark. once again lucy, her brother humf and their friends are caught up in a gripping mystery. the clues point to a buried treasure - but someone wants to stop them from discovering it. and that someone will go to any lengths to do so . . . my thoughts - this book was my mums when she was about ten. id already read all of her secret seven and famous five books when i was younger but these turned up when my grandparents moved house. i enjoyed this book it was like being ten again, very easy to read and a good plot. the only downside was that it didnt seem to have as much plot as the famous five/secret seven books that i enjoyed before and seemed to be over very quickly, but a good easy read. i have another three books by the same author to read. lauraloves Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 i brought Jodi Picoult - Songs of the Humpback Whale today, im really liking some of her books. Quote
lauraloves Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 Lone Pine Five - Malcolm Saville Synopsis - Once again the intrepid Lone Piners are set on an adventure in Shropshire. Jenny, in particular is drawn deeply into the adventure. However, the twins, as always, come out top defeating Powerless Percy and the rest of the bullies! Called Lone Pine Five as it is their fifth adventure together, and it will make you want to read the rest! my thoughts - i thought that i would enjoy this book as much as the last i had read but i didnt. i got quite confused with the caracters as there wasnt much explanation as to who they were. i was also quite confused that Peter was a girl :/ also the roman treasure which esentially the book is about, seemed to be rushed in at the end. not the best book in the series. lauraloves Posted July 11, 2010 Author Posted July 11, 2010 The Secret of Grey Walls - Malcolm Saville Synopsis - Peter and penny leant against the trunk of a great fir tree while above them the branches tossed and threshed. suddenly peter said in excitement: 'watch! somebody is signalling . . . thats morse.' 'weve found them!' penn shouted. but peter put her hands over her eyes. 'whats wrong?' peter said slowly, 'i'm scared. i've been here before. i remember now . . . there ought to be a fire! look behind you!' penny turned, and felt her scalp tingle with fear as she saw a belt of red and orange flames sweeping down towards them from the top of the hill. my thoughts - this is the third lone pine adventure i have read, and to be honest im not enjoying them as much as i thought i would. im really sick of one of them having a dream at the begining and the whole i know what to do because i have dreamed it. the characters are also still very confusing as their are so many of them. the story was quite good but it still seemed very rushed at the end. lauraloves Posted July 11, 2010 Author Posted July 11, 2010 Man With Three Fingers - Malcolm Saville my thoughts - i enjoyed this book far more than the others i had read. weather it was because the charcters had grown up, or weather it was because i thought the story was better, but i really enjoyed this book. lauraloves Posted July 16, 2010 Author Posted July 16, 2010 Worzel Gummidge - Barbara Euphan Todd Susan and John are having a very dull holiday in the country until they meet Worzel. They are amazed by the walking, talking bundle of clothes and straw. He's half scarecrow and half human but best of all, he's a wizard! Susan and John soon grow to love Worzel and share all sorts of magical adventures with their unusual friends my thoughts - this book was lovely. it once belonged to my auntie and i dont know why i hadnt read this before. it was a lovely childrens story, very easy to read and a very quick read too. lauraloves Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 La Prisonniere - malika oufkir Synopsis - Malika Oufkir was born into a well-connected Moroccan family and when she was five years old she was chosen to be the special companion of Lalla Mina, King Muhammad V's daughter. Malika was taken away from her family and remained confined within the palace at Rabat for 14 years. She then had two years of vague normality before her father, General Oufkir, was implicated in an assassination attempt on Muhammad's successor, King Hassan II. The General was executed and Malika and the rest of her family were slung into a remote desert gaol where they remained for 15 years. Their release was only secured after they tunnelled their way out of the prison and remained at liberty for five days. The resulting furore after their recapture led to the family being transferred to house arrest and it was not until 1996 that the they were able to leave the country. my thoughts - i have had this book for a while but have only just round to reading it. this is the first time in a long time that i have sat and read for a whole afternoon. this is a true story and at times i had trouble with the fact that another human could imprison another for over 15 years in a desert, especially as some of the family were children. it is written in a beautiful way and i really felt for the people involved as their lives have been totally changed by the ordeal. lauraloves Posted July 25, 2010 Author Posted July 25, 2010 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Synopsis - Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-moon glasses. 'It is time,' he said, 'for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry. Please sit down. I am going to tell you everything.' Harry Potter is due to start his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry. He is desperate to get back to school and find out why his friends Ron and Hermione have been so secretive all summer. However, what Harry is about to discover in his new year at Hogwarts will turn his whole world upside down ...But before he even gets to school, Harry has an unexpected and frightening encounter with two Dementors, has to face a court hearing at the Ministry of Magic and has been escorted on a night-time broomstick ride to the secret headquarters of a mysterious group called 'The Order of the Phoenix'. And that is just the start. A gripping and electrifying novel, full of suspense, secrets, and - of course - magic. my thoughts - i'm currently re-reading the harry potter series. this is my second favourite book in the series. i love the plot of this book, the development of the caracter of harry especially. ive really connected with Dumbledore this time around especially with what happends in the next book. lauraloves Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Sally Goes to Sea - C.H. Falcon this was a book that belonged to my mum so i thought i would give it a read and see. i really wish i hadnt bothered. there was far to much 'sea talk' in it. that may be expected in a book about sailing but their was no explaination of what was going on about. not an enjoyable read. lauraloves Posted July 31, 2010 Author Posted July 31, 2010 Remembering D Day - Martin W. Bowman Synopsis - This collection of personal histories marks the 60th anniversary of D-Day on June 6th 2004. The book includes a range of experiences from civilians as well as all ranks from air, land and naval services. Their stories are set against a broader framework and chronology of events leading up to the Allied invasion. my thoughts - to start with I found this a very interesting book. the visual artwork that was on nearly every page really coplimented the text. however, as I got further into the book I got quite board with it and found it quite repetitive. I feel that if a person had a particular interest in D Day this book would appeal to them but it didnt to me. Quote
