lauraloves
Penny Vincenzi - Windfall Waterstones Synopsis Cassia Fallon has been married to her doctor husband for seven years when her godmother leaves her a fortune. She is determined to be sensible, to stay in control. Suddenly, for the first time in her life, she is able to do exactly as she likes. She starts to question her marriage, her past, her present and future. The money gives her confidence, and her husband Edward can only look on resentfully as she resumes her medical career, sheds some of her domestic burdens, and re-forms old relationships - one of them of a most dangerous kind. But where did her legacy really come from and why? Too soon the windfall has become a corrupting force. One that Cassia cannot resist . . . My Reveiw - i absolutly loved this book it is one of those books where you pick it up and can't put it back down again. the plot revolves around three married couples that seem to be happy, however that is not the case. as it is set in 1930's london their is alot of focus on the status of people and how being divorced will affect their social status. the attitude in the book are sometimes hard to swallow as their was a lot of homophobia around in the 30's and this is reflected in the book. one of the main characters is gay but he has to hide it. there are themes of mystery, death, homophobia, richness, family, affairs, children, medicine and lots of others besides. this was a fantastic book and would highly recommend it to anyone. the only downsides would be the ammount of charachters in the book but a quick re-read of some of the pages was all that it took to grasp it. also, it is nearly 800 pages long so bit of a mamouth task but once i started to read i couldnt put it doen. i give it 4.5/5.

lauraloves
Launcelot and Guenever - Sir Thomas Murphy ive heard of this story and the plot line before but id never read the story. it was a good story although i found it really heavy going and my mind kept drifting off onto other thoughts. the lexis in the book was very challenging but i did want to carry it through to the end. lauraloves
Fighter Boys - Saving Britain 1940, Patrick Bishop Waterstones Synopsis A remarkable, intimate portrait of the young men of Fighter Command, whose skill, temperament and morale determined the fate of Britain and arguably the free world. The Battle of Britain, fought in the skies over Britain during the sweltering summer of 1940, was one of the most crucial battles ever fought: without the Luftwaffe's control of the skies it was unlikely that Nazi Germany would mount an invasion across the Channel. For most of the 3,000 young British airmen involved this was their first real experience of combat. The pressure on the pilots, groundcrew and their controllers was unimaginable; at certain points in the Battle a single blunder or failure of nerve could have been enough to tip the balance of the contest and give victory to the enemy. Patrick Bishop creates a new and surprising portrait of the Battle drawing on previously unseen source material and testimonies from survivors on both sides. Against the background of wider strategic considerations, he focuses on the lives and thoughts of the combatants, their attitudes towards 'the enemy' and their aircraft, the fear, horror and exhilaration of flight and battle, attempts by each side to gain the upper hand through daring technological innovations; coping tactics, mess room life and friendships. My review - im really interested in world war two, especially the battle of britain. i orginally brought this book for my a level coursework but i never had the time to read it. this book is very easy to read and it doesnt have to many technical details in whuch i find off putting. also, it gives the perspective of the german pilots which i quite liked too. lauraloves
Bridget Jones' Diary - Helen Fielding Waterstones Synopsis - Bridget Jones wants to have it all - and once she's given up smoking and got down to 8st 7 she will. Based on Helen Fielding's diary in the Independent newspaper, this is a novel about a year in the life of a single girl on an optimistic but doomed quest for self-improvement and Inner Poise. First published in 1996. my review - this is the second time i had tried to read this book, the first i was about 15 i think and i just couldnt get into it. This time however i couldnt put it down. the only downside was that i have seen the film several times and i kept picturing that throughout. this was a very easy book to read and is a brilliant chick lit book. Bridget is a very identifiable character. i would highly recommend this book to anyone. ive just started to read the sequal and i hope it is as good as the first book. chesilbeach
You should also try Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination by the same author. It's great fun and I liked it better than Bridget Jones

lauraloves
Bridget Jomes - The Edge of Reason waterstones synopsis At the end of "Bridget Jones's Diary", Bridget hiccuped off into the sunset with man-of-her-dreams Mark Darcy. Now she discovers what it is like when you have the man of your dreams actually in your flat and he doesn't do the washing up, not just the whole of this week, but ever. my review. i went straight from the first book to this one. i loved this book, as i havent read this one before and i was pleased to see that the same style of writing and plot had carried on throughout. the only critism i had was that the diary entries were longer in this book than the first, which did make me loose track sometimes. i read three quarters of this book in one night so it was very hard to put down. lauraloves
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J K Rowling Synopsis - The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can't wait for the start of the school year. It is his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there are spells to be learnt and (unluckily) Potions and Divination lessons to be attended. But Harry can't know that the atmosphere is darkening around him, and his worst enemy is preparing a fate that it seems will be inescapable ...With characteristic wit, fast-paced humour and marvellous emotional depth, J.K. Rowling has proved herself yet again to be a master story-teller. my thoughts - the harry potter books are my favourite books in the world. i love them! this isnt one of my favourites in the series however once i pick it up i cant put it down again. lauraloves
the dambusters - paul brickhill synopsis - The Dam Busters tells the story of how the crews of 617 Squadron Bomber Command used their flying skills, their tremendous courage and Barnes Wallis' highly accurate bombs to deal devastating blows to Nazi Germany.'The best wartime story of the RAF' Douglas Bader 'In all the history of arms there is no finer epic' Daily Express my thoughts - id orginally thought that 617 squadron was only responsible for the destruction of the dams. how wrong was i. they flew on hundreds of other operations. this book is written lovely, with not to much technical specification in it, as i personally find it difficult to read when this is so. this book is worth reading if you have an intrest in the second world war. next book - No Moon Tonight - Don Charlwood.
