The best book place in the WORLD!

I found out the other week that there is a village named Hay On Wye on the Welsh border and with me living in South Wales it is hardly a two hour journey to get there. :motz:

This small village has over 60, yes I said 60 bookshops ranging from big stores with a varitey of books to tiny specialist shops for example one is called 'Muder and Mayhem'! I'm hoping to go there for a birthday treat but has anyone else been there or like me wants to go?

My Mum told me about this place a couple years ago, there was an article in the Sunday paper about a place in Wales with bookshops everywhere you looked, multiple on the same street, it sounded like heaven. I haven't been yet but I really want to but need to make plans before like a car with a big boot* (not book - see books on the mind too much) and lots of money.

Jasper Fforde, wise as he is, lives there. I really want to go to the festival but apparently the accomodation is prohibitive so it'll probably have to wait until I have a job, and a good one at that *sigh*!

My hubby offered to have a two hour 'stop-over' there on our way home from North Wales the other week.

To his utter surprise I said "No" ~ as a couple of hours just wouldn't be long enough, and it would hurt to leave! :motz:

I plan at the very least to have an overnight visit there at some stage. I see it as me in comfy clothing, with lots of dosh and extra bags, travelling home with the face ache that comes with smugness of purchase. :motz:

We should have a BCF conference there, it would be the perfect location!

Oooh, I like your thinking Chrissy :motz: maybe one of the local B&B's can give us a group discount...?!

And, I empathise with why you refused your hubby's offer :motz: it's the same principle behind me turning down a 15 minute visit to the great W because just what would I achieve in so little time?

This sounds like the kind of place where the members of this forum would spend more money than a gambling addict would during a week in Vegas

So funny and true Ned.

I keep thinking that reading is a very honourable addiction.

Go to the doctors and say you read too much and they won't care a bit. Yipee!

My dad used to go to Hay-on-Wye for a couple of days every year and come home laden with books. I never went with him, because I would have totally bankrupted myself! But I would love to go one day - although I would take cash not my credit card so once I run out I would have to stop. :D

I made sure to visit Hay-on-Wye on my short holiday to the UK a few years back. I hired a car in Liverpool to drive there, and despite a very kind taxi driver writing down instructions for me, I got hopelessly lost and it took me ages to find it. And when I did find it, it was a complete fluke. I still have no idea how I found my way there.

Unfortunately I had to be in Bristol by 5pm or something to drop my car off and then had to dash off to catch a pre-booked train to London, so by the time I found Hay-on-Wye I only got to spend a couple of lousy hours there. :) Still, it was awesome to see it and I'd love to go back and spend a good week or so there. It's in such a lovely area too. Next time I'll be armed with a better map though.
