Just picked this up from the charity shop for 99p! I'm not familiar with any of his other work but decided to get it because I like ancient greek historical novels (Marion Zimmer Bradleys's Firebrand and David Gemmells Lion of Macedon spring to mind.)I had a quick scan at it during my lunch break, looks promising.

Hi. We usually ask people to start new threads for a book once they've read them - this means that you would be able to offer more information, and more importantly, your views.

Have you considered keeping a reading thread here?

I found it to be a enjoyable read, in a similar mould to David Gemmell

(like Gemmell he's not shy to cull a hero or two!)

. I knew a bit about the Spartans and Helots before reading this book but the Author, who knows his stuff (Professor of classical Archeology), informed me on lots more. The battles of Marathon, Thermopylae(of 300 fame) and Plataea are the setting to this heroic tale. Theres plenty of violence, cloak and dagger and a bit of romance in this novel. If you enjoyed 300 you'll like this. My only to quibble with the book was, that I found the Greek names a bit difficult to get to grips with at first but I soon got into the swing of things.

I've not writen a book review in ages so forgive this poor effort.:D
