scottishbookworm Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Here's a thread for all readers of the author to post and give their thoughts on their favourite writer Quote
Lilywhite Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I love Martina Cole. I have read all her books so far and I'm eagerly awaiting Close which has just come out. Quote
kitty Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I am reading my first Martina Cole book at the moment called The Graft. I am finding it okay, but there seems to be alot of swearing and its really putting me off. Im not normally bothered by swearing but this seems so uncalled for. Are all her books like that, or is this a one off? Quote
Lilywhite Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 The Graft wasn't her best work. There is sometimes swearing and violence but that comes with underground London crime novels. Her earlier works are much better, one of my favourites being The Ladykiller. Quote
kitty Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Thanks Lilywhite, I will give The Ladykiller a go. My boyfriends mum loves them, I think thats why I was more shocked with all the swearing! She is so prim and proper. Quote
madcow Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 The Ladykiller was my first Martina Cole novel...I loved it and have been hooked since. I've read nearly all of hers now, some are better than others but I've enjoyed them all the same. Quote
scottishbookworm Posted August 31, 2006 Author Posted August 31, 2006 Anyone read her novel called "The Take?" Quote
Sugar Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I read one on holiday a couple of years back. It had a yellow cover. I thought it was ok, bit too gory for holiday reading. I knew I wouldn't reread it though, so I bookcrossing'ed it. Have a copy of Two Women that my grandpa gave me some vouchers for (it was free with The Sun I think). It's on my TBR shelf, but one of the lower priority ones! Quote
kitty Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Im now on chapter 22 of The Graft and really enjoying it, it just picked up all of a sudden. Will def order some more of her books now! Quote
scottishbookworm Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 I've never read any of her work! my sister loves her work Quote
Lilywhite Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 If you like The Graft, you will love her other stuff. I personally thought the Graft lacked what some of her other books had. Still a good story just not up to standards Quote
scottishbookworm Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 I've not read any of her books yet but will get some Quote
kitty Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Did anybody get there free Martina Cole book yesterday? Think it was called The Faceless from the News Of The World. Does anybody know if its any good? Quote
Lilywhite Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I didn't know about this offer but I have read Faceless before. I can't quite remember what it was about yet but I think it was one of her better books Quote
madcow Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 i didn't know about it. Synopsis Eleven years ago Marie Carter was convicted of killing her two best friends. And she Quote
Lilywhite Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 You already have them all!!! Now I remember this one, a great story if I remember rightly. Mind you, you can't go far wrong with Martina Cole if you like underground dark crime novels. Quote
madcow Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I don't have them all.... Think i'm missing the last one (or two at a push ) Quote
kitty Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Thanks, you must have a big book shelve to fit them on, because her books are always really chunky! Im am looking foward to reading it. Quote
madcow Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Thanks, you must have a big book shelve to fit them on, because her books are always really chunky! Im am looking foward to reading it. I wish.......nearly all my books are in boxes, cos' i got nowhere to put a book case or shelves! I'm waiting for one of the kids to leave home so i can convert their room into a mini library Quote
kitty Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 That sounds like a wonderful idea. my brother is away at uni at the moment, so his room would be perfect! Quote
scottishbookworm Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 Woolworths are Selling her novels for Quote
Lilywhite Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 New novel Close is out 9 Oct. It's a follow on from The Graft. Looks great. Quote
Michelle Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 'Woolies' is a very useful shop.. reasonable prices, but decent quality. http://www.woolworths.co.uk/ Quote
pontalba Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Oh! Thanks for the link. The Woolworth's I remember was smaller scale than that, but it may have been the predesessor to it. They have all evolved more or less along the same track. The products at for example Wal-Mart over here and K-Mart have substantially improved in the last 15 years or so. http://www.walmart.com/ Same difference I expect. Quote
