Lit_Driven_Girl Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Last year a friend gave me 2 books for Christmas. One was Dreams Underfoot: The Newford Collection by Charles de Lint. I was really excited to get his book because I've never read anything by him. I've always heard he is an amazing author. Well... I read the first short story and I'm not feeling it. Boring. Confusing. Confusing. I feel guilty because I still haven't finished the collection. The book just sits on my shelf glaring at me saying, "Your friend is going to find out you haven't read me yet and then she is going to feel hurt that you didn't even try very hard to like me". Has anyone read this or de Lint's other books? Am I being too rough on him? Do I need to just suck it up and go on because the book gets better? Quote
BookJumper Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I received his Spirits in the Wires from my LibraryThing Secret Santa; haven't opened it yet but only because I've read reviews according to which it's one of those de Lint books that only make sense if you're already familiar with the previous Newford installments. Most people suggest Dreams Underfoot as the perfect primer to the series, so I intend to buy it fairly soon as the ideas behind his books intrigue me greatly. I've only heard good things about de Lint so I'd recommend giving it another go. Maybe the first story isn't the strongest, so you could try opening the book at random and seeing where that takes you? Quote
Lit_Driven_Girl Posted January 7, 2010 Author Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) I received his Spirits in the Wires from my LibraryThing Secret Santa This was actually how I received mine too. Well I guess I'll give it another go, but if the stories don't get better the book will be finding a new home. Probably not for a while though, I have too many other books to read that are more enticing at the moment. Edited January 7, 2010 by BookJumper Fxed quote. Quote
