catwoman
Oh I hope I haven't put you off! If it's any consolation, I didn't watch SITC either, couldn't stand it tbh. It's a short read, so why not give it a go since you have it anyway! . I lent this to my friend tonight, so I will not read it for a while, but she has text me to say that it does look really good, and she has read the first 20 pages and she is already into it! Charm
Dark Lover ~by~ J R Ward Synopsis Courtesy Of Waterstones: In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There also exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Among them, none relishes killing their enemies more than Wrath, the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood...The only purebred vampire left on the planet, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted fighters is killed - orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate - Wrath must usher the beautiful female into the world of the undead...Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn't there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of brotherhood and blood frighten her. But his touch ignites a dawning hunger that threatens to consume them both... My thoughts: Vampires are being hunted down and destroyed by lessers, humans made into souless beings whose sole purpose is to eradicate the vampire race. Wrath is the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a deadly band of vampire warriors hell bent on revenge against the lessers. When one of Wrath's closest warriors is murdered, Wrath is charged with taking care of his beautiful, orphaned, half human, daughter who is due to go through her transition any day now, a transition which will either turn her into a vampire or kill her. She needs all the help she can get as she is introduced to vampires, race wars and a whole other dark world she never even imagined. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Set in modern day New York, it's written in a style that's easy to follow with characters that are very likeable. It has a gritty sub plot of race war mixed with an overlying story of lust and passion between the two main characters. I found myself just wanting to know what happened next as the story unfolded although I would have liked to have seen more of the race war in action. It did get a bit corny at the end with how some of the characters changed, but not enough to spoil it for me. I have already bought some more of the series and will definately be buying the rest. Please note: This book is most definately not for a younger audience as it contains a lot of explicit sexual scenes. 9/10 Edited January 16, 2010 by Charm
chesilbeach
What are you trying to do to me, Charm? Bankrupt me? Break my "only read books you already have" resolve? I'm trying to restrict both my book buying and my ever increasing forays into the supernatural book world (which have increased exponentially since joining this forum), and here you are posting a great review about another SERIES of books that I will now have to buy! Charm
I know! Sorry chesil It's quite a big series too, 8 so far, but I managed to get 3 brand new ones for a fiver in a bargain book shop today, unfortunately two of them were a couple of the later books though and one was a replacement copy of the first (the one I have is slightly damaged) so I can't carry on until I get the 2nd & 3rd, and eventually the 7th & 8th I'm also on the lookout for the Undead series as well I have seen this series on Fantastic Fiction, and have been looking out for it. It maybe one of my purchases of the year I think. That's where I saw it too and I think someone on here recommended it to me. I've already purchased 10 books this year and only read 4! At this rate I'm gonna be pretty broke soon, but at least I won't be bored! Upside? My OH suggested we go and look at bookcases on Sunday! Fi.
Dark Lover ~by~ J R Ward Please note: This book is most definately not for a younger audience as it contains quite a few explicit sexual scenes. You should probably change that to a lot of explicit sexual scenes and the other books have just as many if not more - my older sister was going to buy these for my (very sheltered) 15yo niece until I mentioned those particular scenes and changed her mind about letting B read them! Charm
Grave Secret ~by~ Charlaine Harris Book 4 in the Harper Connelly Series Synposis Courtesy Of Waterstone's: When she was 15, Harper Connelly was struck by a bolt of lightning, which left her with a spiderweb of red over her body, headaches, and episodes of weakness. Sometimes her right hand shakes. And she can find dead people. It's taken a while, but at last Harper's pretty happy with her life: she's making a living, using her unique talent to help people, and she's got a lover - her stepbrother Tolliver. That creeps some people out, but though they grew up together, and got each other through the real bad times - their parents' drug-use, the abuse, the disappearance of Harper's elder sister Cameron - they're not blood relatives. Then Tolliver's dad arrives on the scene, seeking forgiveness for the sins of their youth, and the police get a tip-off that after all these years, Cameron's been spotted in a mall. With all this going on Harper realises life is getting a little complicated, but she doesn't expect those complications to include Tolliver getting shot, or watching a cop die taking a bullet for her. Harper can find dead people, but now it's clear someone wants her dead ... My thoughts: Harper Connelly can find dead people. She can also tell exactly how they died. It's an ability she developed after being struck by lightening when she was 15 and more recently she and her brother have been making an honest living from it, after helping each other get through some hard times. On her most recent booking, Harper makes a discovery which comes as a complete shock to the wealthy client, a shock which shakes her client's world to the core and, as it tumbles down around her, Harper must make sure she and Tolliver don't get caught in the fall out .. Grave Secret is full of twists and turns, hooking you in from the very beginning, while giving you subtle clues the whole way along, you just have to know when you've got one! Harper has developed into a much stronger person and her relationship with Tolliver has an even more solid bond which nothing appears to be able to break. I did find the relationship a bit strange at first in the previous book, but once you get past the stepbrother bit, you see how perfect they are for each other. I enjoyed how the story covered the reactions from people who were told of the new development in their arrangement, some good, some not so good as you would expect, but all in all I think the author handled it well. The story line was another intriguing case for Harper and, as is usual, she gets caught up in the repercussions of her revelation. This time though, I felt it dwelled more on the thriller aspect of the plot rather than the supernatural element, which I was a little bit disappointed in, I'd have liked to have seen more of her talent. The ending also appeared to be a bit rushed to me and all the lose ends seemed to come together a bit too neatly. Having said that, I still really enjoyed the book and began to get a bit aprehensive when I started getting the feeling that this may be the last in the series, it felt like the author was wrapping things up rather too well. I hope not, I would definately love to see more of Harper Connelly! 8/

Weave
Great review Charm, I am really pleased you enjoyed it I felt the same about the ending too, it was a little bit rushed and I think Harper and Tolliver deserved better. I am not sure if there will be any more Harper books, Charlaine Harris seems to be concentrating on the sookie books but I for one would like to see more Harper books. Charm
A Touch Of Dead ~by~ Charlaine Harris A collection of Sookie Stackhouse short stories. Synopsis Courtesy Of Waterstone's: Sookie Stackhouse enjoys her job as a cocktail waitress in Merlotte's, a small-town bar in small-town Bon Temps, deep in Louisiana. She's funny and pretty and, thanks to her grandmother, she's very well-mannered - but since not many people truly appreciate her ability to read their minds, the guys haven't exactly been beating down her door . . . And then along came Bill, tall, dark and handsome - and Sookie couldn't 'hear' a word he was thinking. He was exactly the type of guy she'd been waiting all her life for. Of course, Bill had a disability of his own: fussy about his food, not into suntans, bit of a night person: yep, Bill was a vampire. But at least now Sookie nows there *are* guys she can date who won't worry about her catching them thinking about other women . . . And that's going to make Sookie's life really interesting! My thoughts: This book contains several short stories following Sookie getting in and out of all sorts of trouble, yet still managing to appear warm hearted and sexy. The stories include some of our favourite characters such as the fairies, witches, vampires and werewolves, all of whom appear in The Sookie Stackhouse Vampire Mystery series with a note from the author explaining where abouts in the series each story relates. It's a light, entertaining read and each story can be read quickly and effortlessly, making the book easy to return to after putting it down. Not as exciting as the main series, but not a bad way to pass a few hours if your having some post Sookie blues! 7/
