Ceinwenn Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 GB vs USA in women's curling. GB leading 3-1 in the 5th end.
Peacefield Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Close Encounters of the Third Kind, one of my all-time faves! But I'm also periodically switching back to the Olympics to see Ohno do the Short Track.
catwoman Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 GB vs USA in women's curling. GB leading 3-1 in the 5th end. I'm watching this at the moment OnDemand. I love Curling.
Tristan Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 The Simpsons Damn, you make me want to pop the old season 1 in the DVD-player again.
Mexicola Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Winter Olympics. I don't understand what I'm watching most of the time, but I enjoy it anyway.
AbielleRose Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Winter Olympics. I don't understand what I'm watching most of the time, but I enjoy it anyway. Is Curling on again? I cannot figure out what is going on with that one! Why do they sweep? What is their goal? *Sigh*
Mexicola Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Is Curling on again? I cannot figure out what is going on with that one! Why do they sweep? What is their goal? *Sigh* Not right now, but I was asking the exact same questions when watching it last night! I think they sweep to try and slow it down? But as for what they're actually aiming to achieve, I have NO idea. I made it my mission last night to find out today, so off to Wikipedia I trot.. I'll let you know how I get on!

I'll let you know how I get on! *Ponders the mysteries of curling* My theory is that it is just a drunken frat game that somehow caught on. That or the people are telepathic and trying to move the big round handle thingy with their minds.
ned Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Apparently it helps the stone to go further and straighter.
Nollaig Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 It does, because it smoothes the surface, reducing friction. The less friction, the further an object will travel.

That or the people are telepathic and trying to move the big round handle thingy with their minds. After reading up on the rules and aims of the game, I think it'll be easier to stick with your theory! Ok, the sweeping apparently makes the stone thingy travel further and changes the amount of curl. And the aim...yeah it's that telepathic thing. Ooh, it's on again! *watches avidly* I always wonder how people get into these kinds of sports to begin with?
AbielleRose Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Ooh, it's on again! *watches avidly* I always wonder how people get into these kinds of sports to begin with? Ooh! Its on?!?!?! *Rummages around for remote* Must...watch...curling...
ned Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 found the inventors of the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hr2DABUrTE
AbielleRose Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 found the inventors of the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hr2DABUrTE Its nice to solve the mystery!
Mexicola Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 It does, because it smoothes the surface, reducing friction. The less friction, the further an object will travel. Ah see, I thought that the sweeping might have been making friction on the ice thus slowing it down. Ooh! Its on?!?!?! *Rummages around for remote* Must...watch...curling... It's the men's curling, not seen this yet.
AbielleRose Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 It's the men's curling, not seen this yet. Just watch their faces. They are so intense! I can't help it, but they seriously look like they are trying to will the thingy (sorry, no idea what it is called) to move with their minds. I keep waiting for one of the sweepers to trip over an already launched thingy.
