Kreader
I'd recommend, Graceling, Symphony of Ages (even though it starts slow), Septimus Heap (YA book series), The Farseer trilogy, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Tinker and of course the already mentioned Black Magician's trilogy. Raven
Every time I come into this thread, I feel like I'm reading a different Black Magician Trilogy to everyone else!

I wish people would give her other trilogy more attention.
Fionen
I ended up using part of the card on birthday gifts for my bookworm sisters. That left enough for me to get Magyk (Septimus Heap #1) by Angie Sage. Roxi, I will get around to reading the Coldfire series. It sounds great. bubbleprincess
A series that is good as well is the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop and also duology Landscapes of Ephemera. I also just discovered Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. Edited August 29, 2009 by bubbleprincess

Nollaig
Oh you got the new modern covers. I got a revised version of the original covers.

Nollaig
They're nice, but they make me think Garth Nix or something, not nearly 15-20 year old sci-fi. These are mine:
Raven
They're a bit too "sword and sorcery" for me!
Nollaig
Well, the books do have a lot of swords and sorcery in them
BookJumper
Yours are the ones I want, Roxi - as ever, great minds think alike! Alas, Forbidden Planet only had volume three with that cover and in tatty condition at that, I'll have to Amazon it I think... loath as I am to do that, given my recent less-than-satisfactory online purchases... Nollaig
They're gorgeous aren't they? Like I say, I paid a lot for them, and they came from America, but it was worth it coz I really love them.
Raven
Well, the books do have a lot of swords and sorcery in them Okay, perhaps I should have said "Naff sword and sorcery". There was a trend in the eighties and early nineties to put somewhat whimsical, airbrushed covers on fantasy books that I particularly dislike (I know these books may be of that era, but this type of cover would stop me picking the book up in the first place). I much prefer the simpler covers they have now, to my mind they are more striking, and they don't give off the low-budget eighties vibe that is reminiscent of films like Hawk The Slayer and Beastmaster. But, each to their own I suppose!
Nollaig
That's what I love about them! Cheap and tacky screams eighties sci-fi - If I had the money I'd buy a load of old sci fi movie posters with the god awful artwork, I just love it
BigWords
I much prefer the simpler covers they have now, to my mind they are more striking, and they don't give off the low-budget eighties vibe that is reminiscent of films like Hawk The Slayer and Beastmaster. Then I shouldn't point out how enjoyable I found Hawk The Slayer, and even the Beastmaster films ('cept the last one)...
Raven
I don't mind Beastmaster, to be honest, but it's not what I look for in a book. Hawk the Slayer is rubbish though!
