As you may know, a few days ago I bought a copy of "Hell and Earth" by Elizabeth Bear from Forbidden Planet; since I've discovered it's part of a series of books that can be read as standalone novels, except of course "Ink and Steel" and "Hell and Earth", which are really a two-part novel called "The Stratford Man". Quite clearly, I need to buy "Ink and Steel" - but how to go about it?

Amazon has two versions: one for less than

Buy the pretty ones. That's what I did when I had a similar dilemma. I paid more for the rarest covers, because they were the prettiest, and I'm glad I did.

I would definitely go for the copy to match the book you've got. If it's something you know you want to keep forever, if you go for the cheaper one, you'll regret it further down the line and will always be annoyed/upset/frustrated by it, and you may even end up buying the more expensive copy at a later date, so the cheaper option would end up costing more in the long run! (I know that's what I'd end up doing)

If you can bear the wait, then at least if you go for the Forbidden Planet book, it's not that much more expensive than the mass market paperback version, and 21 days isn't that long to wait ... it'll give you something to look forward to.

Matching copies definitely - I hate when publishers change the format of a series and I end up with various sized books by the same author ;)

I'd go for the cheapest one, and spend the change on another book. Hang what the bookshelves look like!

It's the affording another book by getting the cheapy that does it for me!

I would go for the cheapest too. I love buying books so much that I have to buy cheap ones so I can buy lots ;)

Either match the book you have, or replace your old copy to match the new one. Gotta have them matching if at all possible!

... YES!! The best of both worlds exists! I have found the big, non-shiny copy to match the sequel already in my possession at

They sound like they'd be right up my street too - I'm going to have to have a look at them! ;)

Thank you ;) now, if I can just stick to the reading plan and finish "Generation Dead" by the end of the week I will be able to start on this as soon as it arrives... yippee!
