Charm Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Twilight - Stephenie Meyer New Moon - Stephenie Meyer Eclipse - Stephenie Meyer I have these on mount TBR ... Dracula - Bram StokerInterview with a Vampire - Anne Rice Angelas Ashes - Frank McCourt 1984 - George Orwell Bitten - Kelley Armstrong Stolen - Kelley Armstrong Dime Store Magic - Kelley Armstrong .. Stephanie2008 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I can reread the Twilight series over and over. If I wrote a list it would probably include those books - reread 10 times each I'm not too struck on 1984 and haven't read any of the others, although I really want to read Interview With A Vampire (I love the film ) Quote
Kimmy619 Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 1984 is actually one of my favourite books although I know that a lot of people on here aren't too keen on it. I guess it is like marmite, you either love it or you hate it We do have similar tastes Charm! If you can ever think of anything that you think I might enjoy, let me know as I am always looking for new book suggestions. I can read Twilight over and over again Stephenie. If I ever lose my reading mojo, I read one of the Twilight saga and it comes back Quote
Charm Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I will indeed. How are you finding Industrial Magic? Its on my wishlist Quote
Kimmy619 Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 (edited) This is my first attempt at a review, so here goes... Dime Store Magic – Kelley Armstrong Play.com review: Paige Winterbourne is a witch. Not that you'd notice - no warts, no green skin, no cute little wiggle of the nose whenever she casts a spell. No, most of the time she's just a normal 23-year- old girl; works too hard, worries about her weight, wonders if she'll ever find a boyfriend. Okay, so she does have an adopted teenage daughter, Savannah, who wants to raise her black witch of a mother from the dead. And who is being stalked by a telekinetic half-demon and an all-powerful cabal of sorcerers. But other than that, Paige has a really ordinary life. That is, until the neighbours find out who she is, and all hell breaks loose. Literally... I started to read this book straight after I had read Bitten and Stolen, the first two books from the Women of the Underworld series. I was a bit apprehensive about Dime Store Magic as although we had met both Paige and Savannah in the previous book, the reader didn’t really get a chance to build a rapport with them. Paige is a very different heroine to Elena and although I liked her, I think that I would have liked it had she been more feisty as she didn’t seem as ‘kick-ass’ at her werewolf predecessor. I liked the introduction of Lucas Cortez and even thought his relationship with Paige was inevitable, I still look forward to reading about him in the future Although most of the characters are supernatural, I still connected with them on a ‘human’ level as they were all dealing with their day to day issues which gave the book more depth. Dime Store Magic is fast paced and has a modern feel to it. I found the plot slightly predictable, but I would still recommend this book as it was an enjoyable read. Kimmy619 Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 I will indeed. How are you finding Industrial Magic? Its on my wishlist I am enjoying it actually. I haven't been getting much reading done in the evenings as I have been too tired so I have been reading a bit in the morning Some 'interesting' new characters have been introduced which is giving the main charaters people to bounce off if that makes any sense? Charm Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I am enjoying it actually. I haven't been getting much reading done in the evenings as I have been too tired so I have been reading a bit in the morning Some 'interesting' new characters have been introduced which is nice. Ooh sounds good! I've tried the old 'no more new books til I've read loads' rule but I've just about given up trying to stick to it! Quote

Peacefield Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I'm glad you started this thread, Kimmy! There are several books on your list that I also want to read, and some of which I read and LOVED, including 1984, Catcher in the Rye and Wicked. And of course, the Twilight books goes without saying for me . I could read them over and over again too and not get sick of them. Have you read any of Gregory Maguire's other books? I loved Wicked, but for some reason had a really hard time getting through his 'Mirror, Mirror.' Quote
Kimmy619 Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 Have you read any of Gregory Maguire's other books? I loved Wicked, but for some reason had a really hard time getting through his 'Mirror, Mirror.' Funny you should mention that! When I was in Borders on the weekend, I picked up Mirror Mirror and almost got to the till before I changed my mind and put it back. I really enjoyed Wicked, but I wasn't sure how much further he could take it. I probably won't buy it new, but may request it from one of the book swapping sites. I am still trying to think of sutable holiday reading to take with me, decisons decisions!! Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Industrail Magic - Kelley Armstrong From Amazon: After Paige Winterbourne is ousted as leader of the American Coven of Witches, all she wants to do is hide under her duvet for a few months. Let the supernatural world manage without her, see if she cares...But fate, of course, has other plans. A murderer is on the loose - someone with superhuman skills. When Paige learns that the killer is targeting children, she realises she has to get involved in the covert investigation. And so Paige - desperate to protect those she loves - is thrown into a world of arrogant Cabal leaders, drunken necromancers, sulky druid gods and pretentious leather-clad vampires. Luckily, she has a female werewolf and a certain renegade sorcerer on her side... I enjoyed this book. It was nice to get to know Paige and Lucas a bit more after having read Dime Store Magic. Again, I would recommend this book. Mark: 7/10 Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Haunted - Kelley Armstrong From Amazon: Eve Levine - half-demon, black witch and devoted mother - has been dead for three years. She has a great house, an interesting love life and can't be killed again - which comes in handy when you've made as many enemies as Eve. Yes, the afterlife isn't too bad - all she needs to do is find a way to communicate with her daughter Savannah and she'll be happy. But fate - or more exactly, the Fates - have other plans. Eve owes them a favour, and they've just called it in. An evil spirit called the Nix has escaped from hell. She feeds on chaos and death, and is very good at persuading people to kill for her. The Fates want Eve to hunt her down before she does any more damage, but the Nix is a dangerous enemy - previous hunters have been sent mad in the process. As if that's not problem enough, it turns out that the only way to stop her is with an angel's sword. And Eve's no angel... I really liked Eve as a character. In the previous books, Eve hadn't really been painted in a very good light, but after reading Haunted, you can really start to understand her. She is a very different leading lady from Paige and I really got the sense that she could handle pretty much any situation. I liked the development of her relationship with Kristof. Although we had met him breifly in Dime Store Magic, we really knew nothing about him. It was nice to get to know more about the supernatural afterlife. Mark: 7.5/10 Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 No Humans Involved - Kelley Armstrong From Amazon: No Humans Involved stars necromancer Jaime Vegas. She's on a television shoot in Brentwood, Los Angeles when weird things start to happen. Invisible hands brush her arms, she sees movements out of the corner of her eye, unintelligible fragments of words are whispered in her ear. Jaime's used to seeing the dead and hearing them clearly. But now, for the first time in her life, she knows what humans mean when they say they're being haunted. Jaime is determined to get to the bottom of this, but she doesn't realize how low her investigation will take her, or what human-based horror she will uncover. As Jamie delves through the dark underside of Los Angeles she'll need as much Otherworld help as she can get to survive unscathed. But Jeremy, the alpha-werewolf is there by her side to offer his protection. And maybe more than that ... No Humans Involved gives the reader a chance to get to know Jamie Vegas and Jeremy Danvers, two characters which haven been briefly introduced in previous books. Both characters are extremely likeable and from outset, I wanted them to get together as a couple. Jamie is very different from Elena, Eve and Paige as she doesn't really have any active power (apart from communicating with the dead!) which she can use to protect herself. In previous books, she comes accross as quite a shallow but loveable character and she is given a lot more depth in this book. We are also introduced to Hope who seems like she has an interesting 'gift'. Mark: 8/10 Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Personal Demon - Kelley Armstong From Amazon: Hope Adams, tabloid journalist and half-demon, inherited her Bollywood-princess looks from her mother. From her demon father, she inherited a hunger for chaos, and a talent for finding it. Like full demons, she gets an almost sexual rush from danger - in fact, she thrives on it. But she is determined to use her gifts for good. When the head of the powerful Cortez Cabal asks her to infiltrate a gang of bored, rich, troublemaking supernaturals in Miami, Hope can't resist the excitement. But trouble for Hope is intoxicating, and soon she's in way too deep. With a killer stalking the supernatural hot spots of Miami, Hope finds herself dangerously entangled, and has no choice but to turn to her crooked werewolf ex-boyfriend for help. What started as a simple investigation has spiralled into chaos. And Hope finds chaos irresistible ... One word describes this installment of the Women of the Underworld series - brilliant! I really loved this book. The plot was riveting, the characters interesting and I really cared about the outcome. Hope has a very different power to the ones in the previous books and she also has flaws as she struggles to cope with her power. My favourite book so far. Mark: 9/10 Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Dead Until Dark - Charlaine Harris From Play.com: Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much - not because she's not pretty - she's a very cute bubbly blonde - or not interested in a social life. She really is ...but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's fussy about his food, he doesn't like suntans and he's never around during the day ...Yep, Bill's a vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind. And then one of Sookie's colleagues at the bar is killed, and it's beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim ... I read this book in one day, it was a real page turner. I really like the character of Sookie as she always tries to see the best in everyone. This book has a little bit of everything; romance, comedy, horror, fantasy, murder mystert - I could go on and on! Mark: 10/10 Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Living Dead in Dallas - Charlaine Harris From Amazon: Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is having a streak of bad luck. First her co-worker is killed, and no one seems to care. Then she comes face-to-face with a beastly creature which gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins (like they didn't enjoy it). The point is: they saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favour, she obliges - and soon Sookie's in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's supposed to interview certain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave, and let the humans go unharmed. But that's easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly . . . The Sookie Stackhouse books are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves and things that really do go bump in the night. Again, I really enjoyed this book! I liked getting to know some of the other characters that we had briefly met in the previous book. Sookie is getting more and more likeable the more I read and I cannot wait to find out more about Eric! Mark: 10/10 Quote
BookBee8 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 This book has a little bit of everything; romance, comedy, horror, fantasy, murder mystert - I could go on and on! This is what I thought too, they've got so much to them. I'm on Club Dead at the moment and enjoying it just as much as the others. How are you finding it? Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 I really love them, so much so that I think that I may be becoming a Sookie addict I really can't wait to read the next one. The more I read, the more I want to know. I have also been watching the tv series which is really good too! Quote
BookBee8 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Me too. I watched the second episode last night. In the books, I really like Eric at the moment. But the TV version, I actually quite like Bill. The actor does a great job of portraying him. Quote
Peacefield Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 How far are you guys in the TV version? I just finished watching the first season but have no idea what's happened so far in the second. I swooned a lot during the first, . Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 'Officially' (as in the ones shown on FX), we have just seen season 1, episode 2. I have been watching via another method *ahem*, so I have just watched season 2, episode 4. I am becoming a fan of Eric, he has just something with his hair and looks hot hot hot! Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I have only seen the first two episodes of Season One (stupid British TV should have bought it sooner ) and I'm totally addicted already. I really want to read the books too but I've just bought the Harry Potter series so that isn't going to happen for a while. I love Bill though. Apart from the way he says Sookie (which I have mentioned before). Does the series follow the books much? Or is it just the basic premice? Quote
Kimmy619 Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 It basically follows the main storyline of the books, but they add some extra characters and sub-plots etc. I know what you mean about the way Bill says Sookie. I think it may be because he is English?? I am now sat here saying 'Sookie' in (my attempt at) a Louisiana accent to see if I would say it like that...I'm so glad that I am home alone! Quote
Kimmy619 Posted August 2, 2009 Author Posted August 2, 2009 Club Dead - Charlaine Harris From Amazon: There's only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with - at least voluntarily - and that's Bill. But recently he's been a little distant - in another state distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him, and next thing Sookie knows she's off to Jackson, Mississippi, to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead. It's a dangerous little haunt where the elusive vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some Type O - but when Sookie finally finds Bill caught in an act of serious betrayal she's not sure whether to save him, or to sharpen some stakes. The Sookie Stackhouse books are delightful Southern Gothic supernatural mysteries, starring Sookie, the telepathic cocktail waitress, and a cast of increasingly colourful characters, including vampires, werewolves and things that really do go bump in the night. I really enjoyed this installment of the Sookie Stackhouse series. The plot was really exciting and we met some new characters. The love triangle is certainly getting a bit tricky! I used to love Bill, but this book has made me dislike him a little bit The best book in the series so far. Mark: 10/10 Quote
