DLG
Francesca Simon, the author of Horrid Henry, did a book signing at our local Waterstones a couple of weeks ago. We were all very impressed that she took the time to talk to the children and write their names etc in the books. She was also there for twice the amount of time she should have been. I have been to signings before and been disappointed, but a big thumbs up to Francesca. The most important thing is to encourage children to read and enjoy
BookJumper
When I was a child my then favourite author (Italian children's lit author Bianca Pitzorno) did a reading at my favourite bookstore (the kind of place where the booksellers remember what you bought last time and are able to give you suggestions); she read for ages, answered lots of questions, signed my book with my name in it... I relished that day. So yes, it is important to encourage children to read, 'cos then they become BookClubForumists!
