Ouch. I think he favours Harry Potter. Tbh I agree with him. I think Meyer is a very poor writer, Rowling is a very good writer. However, Meyer's story is so captivating and enjoyable that it doesn't matter how well she writes. I'm not so sure the same would stand for Rowling, who IMHO tries to make the world of Potter seem new and exciting - but in actual fact has just made history and social-type-things magical and real. All that aside, both have negatives and positives and I'm not so sure I could choose. Though I wasn't keen on OtP, disliked HBP and couldn't even finish DH, the first books were so full of enchantment, I read the first three in a day and GoF in another and loved every minute; I wasn't fond of Harry even then, but the Weasleys (especially the twins), Hermione (from whom I think I may have been separated at birth) and Snape (loved his dry wit, especially as interpreted by Alan Rickman) - as well as an irrational adoration for Oliver Wood - made me simply not care: there was so much more to it than just Harry, Harry, Harry. It was magical, and occasionally even made me well up ( Sirius... ). "Twilight", on the other hand (please don't kill me, this is just my humble optinion), got abandoned on page 120 of book 1. I found the writing juvenile and insipid, and the characters laughably unblievable - especially Bella, who is portrayed as both a clumsy girl constantly reproaching herself, and a stunner who is desired by every male student who crosses her path. Excuse me? It sounded to me like the author had never been to a real high school, or in any case like she's never been a or fraternised with any real clumsy girl. Again... please don't kill me. When i was younger, i had gone to my friend's house and watched a part of one of the H.P. movies and had nightmares for a whole week!!! so, finally after all the praise i had head about them, i picked up the first one. It was alright, but i didn't feel like wasting my precious reading time on the other huge novels in the series, so i quit them! I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi, so that might be a reason i didn't like them. I loved the twilight saga, of course, i mean i'm a teenage girl and it is an adventurous love story, but like other people have said, it does get kind of annoying who Bella loves Edward sooo much, how he is so perfect and blah. But Edward is sweet! It annoyed me when the movie came out though.. Edward was supposed to be beautiful:p I hate how movies put different pictures into your head. Harry Potter has a very gripping plot, and everything seems to fall into place throughout the story. They do seem to link and develop coherently, and I guess the humour really appeals to me too, especially when Malfoy is bickering with Harry. However, I think Rowling's writing is STREETS ahead of Meyer's. In fact, I found the Twilight series very run-of-the-mill, whereas the Harry Potter books do actually have something approaching originality. Rowling's story-telling abilities are also far in advance of Meyer's skills. Just my opinion and I know the Twilight series is exrtemely popular, but I didn't feel they lived up to the hype in any way, whereas once I hopped on the Harry Potter bandwagon I really enjoyed the books more than I had expected. Okay, maybe someday in the future when I have nothing left to read.. But from what I know of Twilight, it's vampires for kiddies, basically. All the negative comments here don't get me excited to read them either, but HP is just so good, I can't see how Twilight can be better. The Harry Potter series is one I got into at around 10 years old and now, 10 years on, I still have urges to read it and have recently finished a re-read of the entire series. I didn't read the 5th or 6th but did read the 7th (the final one I believe?) to see how it ended. I haven't read the first few Harry Potter books since I was a young teen, maybe if I re-read them I'd love them all over again. I have to say I don't care how badly people think Twilight is written, its managed to grab the attention of a lot of teens (and adults) and even got some teens reading that wouldn't otherwise, it deserves praise for that. anisia Posted January 18, 2010 Share Posted January 18, 2010 For me it's an easy choice: definitely love Happy Potter. I read Twilight last year and I couldn't get into it that much. Sure, I finished the books, but they didn't really remain in my mind for long. Harry Potter on the other hand, I've been reading them since I was 13 (I'm 24, soon to be 25!) and I still love them just as much as I did at the beginning. I find the story better written (not saying it doesn't have its flaws), the characters much better developed. I can't really compare the two. Have to say now that I like them both and have to agree that they are very different and would be hard to compare them. Definitely a market for them both and people shouldn't feel that they have to choose a camp, isn't it bad enough that we are torn between Edward and Jacob, lol. And the phenomenon that they have become is astounding. But the Harry Potter series captured my imagination immediately and I completely fell in love with the characters, the setting and the magic . There's no plot, none of the characters are well-developed or equiped with actual personalities, most of the writing centers on Bella fawning over the "adonis" Edward, the themes have a rather unethical feel to them, and it's just boring overall. The only appeal in seems to be that it's - in view of some - "romantic" and "sexy". When you look at it, if that's the only redeamable feature, the book is more akin to soft-core pornography than a work of literature. Harry Potter is not the one of the most advanced or complex works of storytelling, but lord, if it isn't creative, I don't know what it is. Rowling put years of thought into creating a massive, functioning world of her own that never ceases to fascinate. True, it's not completely original, but the way it goes about secretly existing in a version of our modern society is definitely unique. I think I was quite lucky that I started reading them, found out I quite liked them and was able to get the next book straight away without having to wait ages until the next one was published! I felt the writing was better and I think in part because it was set in the UK which is rarer in fantasy type books.
