Nellie
I'm not the best of cooks as Mr Nellie will tell you, but I'm not bad at Fairy Cakes. Mrs Nellie-in-Law is coming to visit tomorrow, so I have made some cakes. I hope they taste OK! *worries*
Stephanie2008
They look lovely. I can never get my fairy cakes to stay flat. They always go up into a point at the middle
madcow
Yummy can I have one with lemon on top please
kay_loves_purple
Wow! They look lovely! The ones with lemon on top are my favorites too I just bet they are yummy too
Nellie
*hands lemon cake to Madcow and Kay* The trick to not making them go up in the middle is not to over fill the cake case. Only 1/3 full of mixture, and then they stay flat, or at least mine do. Any more than that and they rise too much.

Ceinwenn
Do you know, I have lived in this country for almost 9 years & I have never had a fairy cake! (Why are they called that?)
Nollaig
I have no idea, I (in Ireland) actually call them Queen Cakes.
Ceinwenn
I have no idea, I (in Ireland) actually call them Queen Cakes. Interesting!
Nollaig
I don't know why. I used to just call them buns, but due to the apparant hilarity of expressions involving the words 'my buns' I started calling them Queen Cakes. Twas invoked by the childishness of the masses. chrysalis_stage
wow they look yummy, i want cake now......i always thought cakes that had the top cut out and then cut in half and placed back on top to look like wings were fairy cakes? I guess there are many interpretations all over as is with most things. see below (sorry couldnt make pics smaller) the ones on the top left

Guest ii
Okay, so what's the difference between a Fairy Cake and a cupcake?
Nollaig
Nothing. I was going to say that to you the other day when we were talking about baking. (Or was that only yesterday...? I need to lay off posting...) ANYWAY - I was going to say that I love that you call them cupcakes. Its a sensible name, since they sit in paper cups, and its cute. Fairy cakes, Queen cakes, whatever - those names make no sense.
Guest ii
It WAS yesterday! *laughs* I like that name too.* And then there's 'muffins'. But glad to know there's no difference. It's just that I come from such a weird background that sometimes the most obvious things don't make sense to me. And all things British are unknown to me, I have no connection to UK. * Cupcakes featured in a big part in both my reaction to BF's proposal and my dropping-out-of-school plan, I love cupcakes!
