I have found that authors I used to enjoy 10 years ago - Wilbur Smith, Dean Koontz and Clive Cussler don't hold much interest for me any more. Has anyone else noted their favourite authors from a few years ago have taken a back seat ?

Erica James and Maeve Binchy used to hold my interest. Not so much now

Yeah, definitely.

I used to read the Dick Francis books, but I couldn't imagine ever picking one up now. Before I joined BCF, chick-lit was my staple, but I hardly ever touch it these days, apart from Marian Keyes and the odd Jane Green (although lately JG's have been disappointing).

Years and years ago I used to read (wait for it!) Barbara Cartland. Yes I know loads of rubbish, but at the time I loved her!! I suppose it was that era's chick lit really. Anyway I have moved way past all that now I am glad to say and enjoy reading more challenging novels, with lighter stuff in between, as well as crimes and thrillers.

I'm the same. I picked up a John Grisham once to read on a train and couldn't put it down, so bought a few others. I read one and then couldn't get into the next one. I might pick up the other one I have one day but for now I have a lot I really want to read first.

Heavens yes.....my mum started me on Catherine Cookson:lurker: Don't think I would go back to any of them now.

A few months ago I would only read chic lit (sad I know) I wanted to try other genres but I didn't know where to start or what to pick up, that was my main reason for joining this forum!! Since then I've read Jodi Picoult, Agatha Christie, Chronicles of Narnia, Ben Elton, Neil Gaiman and many more new authors/genres!! Now I don't find Chic lit to be as good as I thought. Although I will always love and read Carole Matthews and Chris Manby :D

Im glad I have found new authors and genres though, I didn't realise how much I was missing :)

I was always a horror reader.. it took this forum to help me find lots of new authors and books. :)

That reminds me - I used to read a lot of James Herbert - I really enjoyed his early books when I was a teen. In fact I will still pick up his now . I enjoyed Creed and The Ghosts of Sleath, but I wasn't that keen on The Secrets of Crickley Hall.

I was predominently a horror reader - Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Richard Laymon were among my "regular reads". Also Terry Pratchett - I've been a big fan of the Discworld series since 1992 and I would regularly re-read those books. Eventually, though, despite loving those books, I decided that some fresh material would be a good idea and I branched out a bit a few years back and decided that joining a book forum might help me broaden my horizons a bit. It did - and now I practically devour pretty much anything I can get my mitts on!

Since branching out, I've discovered I love historical fiction and gritty crime thrillers (although I did read one or two crime books before). I've also started delving into classics and modern classics - an experience I'm enjoying immensely!
