Oliwia44 Posted Tuesday at 10:15 AM Posted Tuesday at 10:15 AM What’s a book you didn’t expect to like but ended up loving? What changed your mind as you read it? Quote
Hayley Posted Wednesday at 05:43 PM Posted Wednesday at 05:43 PM Great question! I was actually talking about this with my friend a couple of days ago. I didn't expect to like Jane Austen's Emma. I thought that a) it was romance, which I don't usually like and b) the character of Emma would just be really unlikeable. But then I discovered that Austen is actually very witty and, although it obviously has a romance plotline, it's more a social commentary. How about you, @Oliwia44? Quote
Hux Posted Wednesday at 06:07 PM Posted Wednesday at 06:07 PM Hard Rain Falling. A gay love story which moved me more than I thought it would. Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted Wednesday at 08:13 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:13 PM I’ve been thinking about this since you posted and it’s a great subject. The book that I thought I would not enjoy was Worth Dying For, Lee Child. It’s a Jack Reacher book and I honestly thought that it would be truly awful but, in the absence of anything else to read at the time I picked it up and was pleasantly surprised to find that Lee Child can, in fact, string a sentence together and that there was an actual plot to follow (I have no idea what I expected to find, to be honest but was fairly sure it would be badly written) Quote
Madeleine Posted Thursday at 02:09 PM Posted Thursday at 02:09 PM Funnily enough this is the only Jack Reacher book I've read, or tried to read. Like you I was in a reading slump at the time and thought oh well a bit of escapism, and at first it was OK but after I got about halfway through and he spent 4 pages describing how to hot wire a car I started to lose the will to read and gave up on it! 1 Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted Thursday at 02:27 PM Posted Thursday at 02:27 PM I was in hospital at the time and the only other book my brother brought in was also Jack Reacher. I thought my brother was having me on but I enjoyed it at the time, so he was right. An online friend of mine calls these a ‘park-your-brain’ book 1 Quote
Madeleine Posted Thursday at 04:28 PM Posted Thursday at 04:28 PM I watched the first series on Amazon Prime, it was enjoyable but not sure if I'd want to watch any more, pretty violent but at least the guy playing Reacher is more convincing than Tom Cruise! He's built like the proverbial brick you know what. Quote

Saw a bit of Tom Cruise and it just wasn’t believable, in my opinion. Quote
