Laramie Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I don't know if this should go in the classics club, but never mind. I wonder if anyone could recommend a good classic for a 15-year-old? I've found a site that gives you free ebooks, you see, but only on old books. I have Beatrix Potter, Black Beauty and Aesop's fables so far. Any suggestions? Quote
Janet Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett? It should be old enough to be on that site. Similarly, The Railway Children by E Nesbit! Quote
Laramie Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 It has 11 by him, but not The Secret Garden. Doesn't have The Railway Children either. grrr thanks anyway. Any other suggestions? Quote
Kell Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Depends on what kind of thing the particular 15-y-o is into. Myself, I was into horror - especially vampires - so things like Dracula and Frankenstein were perfect for me. Quote
~V~ Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Little Women (or Good Wives, etc)? I suppose I was into Horror a little more at fifteen too Quote
Laramie Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) Just got Frankenstein (oddly, famous as it is, I've never actually read it). Got Dracula too, though we read a play version at school and it sucked. And I got Little Women as well! Thanks for your help, guys. That'll do me for now (though I may be back when I've read them ). EDIT: I just got 2 Jane Austen too. My friend likes Pride and Prejudice, and that was one of the ones I got, so hopefully that'll be good Edited May 25, 2008 by Doctor-Who-Mad-Gal Quote
Mia Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 The Little Princess (or is it A Little Princess?), or maybe Jane Eyre. Quote
Karen1 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Oooh I loved Jane Eyre. It's the only 'classic' I've ever been able to read. Quote
~V~ Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Oh, next dip around some Daphne du Maurier if they have it DWMG Quote

BookJumper Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Some of my favourite classics that I read at your age or close enough are: Hard Stuff Worth the Effort Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, "Taras Bulba" Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, "The Sorrows of Young Werther" Victor Hugo, "Les Mis Quote
Kell Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Im not sure if you can call it a classic but I love Wuthering Heights! Such a touching story and I'm 16 nd loved it! DEFINITELY a classic! Quote
Dimitra Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I love Wuthering Heights! Such a touching story Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I see you got Jane Eyre, good choice in my opinion;). Also, if you like Pride & Prejudice, try Sense & Sensibility, Emma and perhaps Persuasion, they're from the same author. But Wuthering Heights most of all! Quote
snow Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 i have a daughter only 5years old, just studying........ Quote
Polly Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Ah I few people have taken my suggestion definatly read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The Jane Austin novels are also really good though can get slightly repetative. Quote
