angelofboox Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I carry a book most of the time and sometimes people shake their head at me. I like working out things in a book before the characters because it makes me feel clever if someone else hasn't, although frustrating if it's not worked out in the book soon after. I don't try too hard to work things out, but if there's something that obviously NEEDS to be worked out I'll wonder about it (e.g. Part One of Atonement I found the culprit to be obvious although the bit at the end in Part Three just left me sort of apathetic, despite it being unexpected). I take it as a good plot-twist if nobody manages to guess something that all the clues have been left for and then, of course, it's blindingly obvious what the answer is now that you know it and you can't imagine how you didn't see it all along! Off the top of my head one I can think of (unfortunately, some of you may say) is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which blew me away when I first read it (although bear in mind I was about ten) because I'd never have figured that one out myself but it all made sense in the end. Kylie Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Ah, Harry Potter! Now there is a series of books that I gave a lot of thought to in regards to how it was going to end. I don't know how I could have forgotten that! There were long conversations with friends at work, and time spent poring over various websites. I seem to recall posting my thoughts on my blog just prior to the 7th book coming out (and finding later that I got things right!). Quote
Kell Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 I seem to recall posting my thoughts on my blog just prior to the 7th book coming out (and finding later that I got things right!).I thought very early on in the series that a certain other character would play a major part in the finale and was very pleased to discover that I was right. In case anyone hasn't read it and knows this, I'll put it in spoiler code: From the moment it was mentioned that Neville could have been the boy mentioned in the prophesy, I thought - "now there's a storyline waiting to happen!" I was very pleased to see that he was the one to pull the sword out of the sorting hat at the end - good lad, Neville! Quote
Icecream Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 (edited) Now, there is something annoying. I don't have a dentist either, and neither do the girls, because there aren't any. We have been on a waiting list since Katie was three months old. Ahem, anyway, I am not very intelligent, so I only see obvious things. I have seen one or two things others haven't such as the two secrets in The House at Riverton, or the baby thing in The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox . I have started to understand characters a lot more recently though, so maybe that will change. Kell, I too knew that something would have to come of the Neville thing.
