~Andrea~ Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 This is an author I definitely need to read at some point, but as I haven't as yet, I wouldn't know Quote
Guest Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 The Trial is on Mount TBR and as it's a short one, I could bump it up a few slots so we would have something to discuss. Then again, size isn't everything (ahem) so it may be the case that it has depth despite its brevity and deserves more of my time. Quote
z10 Posted March 30, 2008 Author Posted March 30, 2008 oh, kafka certainly deserves a lot of time to ponder part of his skill is what he says by not saying it Quote
Kylie Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I enjoy Franz Kafka. I read The Metamorphosis first and thought it a little...strange, but still enjoyable. I liked The Trial more. Quote
z10 Posted March 30, 2008 Author Posted March 30, 2008 i dread reading the trial again such was the affect it had upon me Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Read them all about 15 years ago, maybe more. People took the proverbial out of me for reading The Trial in the bath. Metamorphosis might be the best short story ever. The Trial is marvellous. Amerika a bit underwhelming. Quote
~Andrea~ Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 i dread reading the trial againsuch was the affect it had upon me What effect did it have on you? Is it depressing? Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I found it dark, but not really that depressing. It's famed as being depressing, but I don't think that's quite the right description. Quote
Weave Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I have 'Metamorphosis' but I have still to read it. Quote
chrysalis_stage Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 (edited) Waiting on the "Metamorphosis" to come in the post, looking forward to reading it straight away . Edited February 8, 2009 by Maureen Punctuation Quote
Ben Mines Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Some people find reading Kafka unbearably depressing. Others claim it's a hoot. Still others see meaningful spiritual implications in his work. Probably, his work is all of these things and more. The first time I read The Trial and The Castle I got a queasy, helpless feeling in my stomach, like descending in a fast elevator. However, Borges claims the form of Zeno's famous paradox, "is precisely that of The Castle" and that "the arrow and Achilles are the first Kafkaesque characters in literature," which I think is a good way of looking at Kafka's work: as presenting abstract, metaphysical and spiritual problems, rather than being stories of nightmarish hopelessness. I bought a book of his short stories - read "The Judgement" twice to get a better picture, have yet to read the others, look forward to doing so tho . Wonders disciple Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I got the Trial for Christmas and I picked up Metamorphois at a second hand shop. I should be starting the Trial in the next few days. Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Without wanting to be silly, The Trial isn't exactly a classic "christmas present" kind of book... Quote
Wonders disciple Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Without wanting to be silly, The Trial isn't exactly a classic "christmas present" kind of book... Well maybe not:) but I basically had a large list of books that I wanted and so I used christmas to get as many as I could:D Also I never really look at books in that way. It's the same with music, I don't have to be in a particular mood. I just enjoy music/reading. Quote
Anthony1900 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I've read a few Kafka stories and i think they're great. The Metamorphosis is probably my favourite and A Country Doctor is also brilliant -try it! Quote
