Horror books to read

I love reading horror novels. Recently I read "House of Leaves" and "The Haunting of the hill house."

I am looking for some similar horror books or even different horror books.

Check out M.R.James collections of Ghost stories and H.P.Lovecraft's weird fiction! Stephen King may be another choice for you, although many readers find him divisive and either love or hate his work!

I don't read a lot of horror but I really liked the atmosphere of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black! 

 

For a very short horror story, Click-Clack the Rattlebag by Neil Gaiman is great (and freely available on CommonLit Click-Clack the RattleBag by Neil Gaiman | CommonLit Library )

I came back to find this thread after having a thought today - I think Dracula is my favourite horror book!

I loved Dracula too. Just finished The Omen by David Seltzer.

There was a film called The Vanishing which was originally Dutch but a re-make was made by the Americans. I remember overhearing a colleague talk about it. It was horrifying. Later I learnt it was based on a book by Tim Krabbe. He is a Dutch author. I read one of his other books about an amateur cycle race called The Rider, which is often rated by cyclists as the best book about cycling.
