Laramie Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I'm not sure if there's a thread for this already, but similarly to the music association thread I started, are there any books which remind you of a certain person, place or thing? The Enchanted Horse makes me think of my friend, because she gave it to me after she didn't want it any more (you ever read the Enchanted Horse? Very sad ) Black Beauty reminds me of Sandringham cuz that's where I got it from. Across The Wall gives me this picture of me sat in a Weatherspoons reading it! Cuz I'd bought it that day and I was bored waiting for my dad to come back from ordering anybody else reminded of something by a certain book? Quote
Kell Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 The Carpet People by Terry Pratchett and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton were two books I bought whilst on holiday in Keswick in 1993. It was the first Pratchett book I'd ever read and fell in love with Pratchett's style (I've since gone on to read each of his books as they come out), neither had I ever read any novels by Crichton, but the film, Jurassic Park was out that summer and I decided to read the book before watching the film. We actually ended up seeing the film first, as we went to see it that very night at the cinema, and I loved it. I also loved the book and have since re-read it several times. Anyway, both of those books will be forever associated with that holiday, which was the last family holiday I went on (I was just shy of 17 that summer). Quote
Icecream Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 The Firm, by John Grisham reminds me of train stations, because I bought it to go on a train journey. I bought The Painted House for the same reason but ended up being to sleepy on the train. Heartbreaker by Susan Howatch reminds me of the guy who gave it to me, a random high spirited guy who decided to chat to me whilst I was moving house and to give me a book. That book ended up having quite an impact on my life. Quote
Adam Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I have certain books that remind me of a certain person or place. Each book I have read holds a special memory for me and when I go through my collection I remember the time I read each one. I love books! Quote
happyanddandy Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 'Coma' by Robin Cook - I was completelyengrossed in this book whilst on the tube returning to the Nurses' Home where I lived 30 years ago. The train had stopped at Warren Street and the doors were just about to close when I looked up and realised it was my stop. I shot out of my seat so fast I left my handbag behind with lots of precious things in. Jewelery, keys, purse and so on. I always think of this episode when I see the book or film. The extraordinary thing was that I got my bag back from Baker St lost property a few weeks later with everything inside except £5 from the purse. I was very very grateful to the stranger that gave it in. Quote
Echo Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Acceptable Risk by Robin Cook. It belonged to my boyfriend, and while we were going through really rough times, a long time ago, I would read it while at his house, and he was ignoring me. I would sit out on the back porch and read sections of it every day. I actually finished it! Then, we made up. Creature by John Saul. I had a HUGE crush on this boy in my 8th grade class, and I saw that he was reading it one day. I went to the local book store and bought it so that I could bring it to school, and so he would think we had something in common. I had never read John Saul before, and I ended up getting hooked! Kylie Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Dreams of Stone by Jonathan Wylie takes me back to a boring lunchtime when I was in Year 7. My friend had dragged me into the library (I loved books back then but didn't necessarily want to be spending every lunchtime indoors!) and I randomly plucked this book off the shelf and was hooked from the first page. I now have all 22 books written by this author. The same thing happened when I received from my teacher a copy of John Marsden's Tomorrow When the War Began, the most incredible series of books I've ever read. My series of Trixie Belden books by Kathryn Kenny. I bought numbers 1-4 and 6 for 20c each from a small book stall at an open day at a university where my Dad used to work. Another moment that started a love affair for a series of books, of which I have almost a complete collection. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams was a book I picked up from a garbage bag on the side of the road. I was visiting my friend's grandmother and it was their local council pick-up day so we were roaming the streets and looking for free stuff. The Beatles (Quote/Unquote) by Arthur Davis was the very first book I bought about The Beatles, when my interest in them was just starting. I fondly remember looking at the photo on the cover with my brother and trying to guess which one was which because I couldn't yet tell them all apart! Quote
