Anika Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Before, I could NEVER leave without something in my hand, but sadly, almost all my local used bookstores are closing, and all I'm left with is about the most poorly stocked Barnes & Noble ever!! Though I have to have my weekly browse (every once in a while a new book will be added to the remainder shelves that is one I must have) I often find myself walking out with nothing at all. Besides, I have a budget to consider..... By the way, is there an 'amazon-anonymous'? --because I think I need thier help. There's way too much I think I need when I'm on there! Even with a TBR pile that's already a small mountain in the corner of my book room, since I've run out of shelf space. Quote

Hehe, that's the thing - there's always the strong temptation to buy new books, even though there are some TBR.. as though if a book isn't bought immediately, it'll be the last chance to get it! In the case of 2nd hand book shops that can be true though. Quote

That's for sure! I just had to have a book by Simon Schama, (An Embarrassment of Riches) that was pretty expensive and I remember going all around town searching for it too! .....that was 2 years ago, and I still haven't read more than chap.1. --okay, just point me toward the Hall of Shame. I'll go quietly.... Quote
pontalba Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Perhaps twice in my life I have come out of a bookstore without purchasing a book. Nah, maybe once. . . . . It just goes against the grain, there is always something one of us can manage to find. Quote
KW Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 We have writer's group in a bookshop every week and I don't buy a thing except a big, doughy pretzel to eat and a drink whilst critiquing! Quote
Lucybird Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 It's rare but I can, usually I have to make myself put down each and every book I pick up though. Generally I just resist going into bookshops instead. I go into Boarders a lot because I like the Starbucks at the back, I can usually resist the books there because I usually buy at Waterstones. Scarlette Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Lately I find myself being surprisingly strongwilled when I visit the bookstore for browsing purposes only. I just tell myself - firmly, but politely - that, no, you will not buy another book, not under any circumstances. Then I slowly, but determinedly enter the store, glance at the prettiful books... And not buy anything. It's very difficult, but sometimes one has to restrain yourself when it comes to such temptations. Quote
Ben Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 No, I shamefully can not leave a bookstore without making a purchase. I think this could quite possibly be where the problem lies. Quote
