I think it's fair to say that I had a fairly dismal reading year in 2014. Mostly because I was living some life and that HAS to be a good thing but then proper life can't be lived without books so it was very bitter sweet. I'm not going to put pressure on myself to read more this year but I hope I can improve on last year's total. At least I've got a reasonable target Like a lot of other members I'm going to do things a bit differently .. no scoring for a start .. that has only ever given me knots in my head and made me disagree with myself. I will try to do reviews but be more casual about it, basically it was just waffle anyway but waffle that took me so long to think/write about that surely I could've added to my totals read? I will probably still waffle from time to time and I most certainly will write lists .. just for the pleasure of crossing things off them really but I'm hoping to be more focused (ha ha!) Hoping for a healthy year for us all Love, light and peace as dear Spike would say xx Quicklinks Mount TBR (look away now ) 1001 Challenge Modern Library Wishlist Conquering Mount Virginia Book Club Forum Member's Favourite Fiction Book Club Forum Member's Favourite Non-Fiction Poached Quotes on Toast Poppyshake's 133 Books You Must Read Before Your Toes Curl Up The English Counties Challenge I'm not going to score but for the sake of adding some colour .. Loved it! Liked it! Not my cup of tea! (possibly these won't even get listed as I'm determined to start abandoning books I don't get on with .. life is too short to read unspeakably bad or even humdrum books .. but then what if they get better?? .. I've often ended up liking a book I started off hating .. oh dear! .. my resolve is weakening ) JANUARY 2015 1. The Franchise Affair - Josephine Tey 2. poppyshake
Poached Quotes on Toasts Toast Quotes 2012Toast Quotes 2013Toast Quotes 2014 Third Year at Malory Towers by Enid BlytonA bell rang. "Dinner!" yelled Belinda. "I'm starving. Rotten breakfasts we get here!" "Rotten!" agreed everyone. They had all eaten big plates of porridge and milk, scrambled eggs and toast and marmalade, but it was always agreed that the food was "rotten" - unless, of course, an outsider dared to criticize the food, and then it suddenly became "too wizard for words."(Fickle little beasts! ) The Awakening of Miss Prim by Natalia Sanmartin FenolleraHe loved to watch the children reading in the sun, stretched out on the lawn, perched in the comfortable old branches of a tree, munching on apples, devouring buttered toast, leaving sticky fingerprints on his beloved books.(Yes .. to really love a book .. you mustn't be afraid to leave sticky fingerprints on it .. or worry about anyone else doing it .. easier said than done though.)The Mangle Street Murders by M.R.C. KasasianHe took to lying in his bath for hours and clambering out in the evenings for a little dry toast and a lot of tea before limping wordlessly back to lock himself in his bedroom.(I'm not really a lover of dry toast ..I will eat it .. better than nothing but it's almost a form of punishment.)Fair Exchange by Michele RobertsThe cold pork fat on the hot toast tasted earthy and salty. It's richness clotted their tongues. They licked their fingers, contented as cats.(I've not had this ... sounds disgusting .. but delightful )The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter MoersAfter six months I introduced a second breakfast consisting of two slices of toast and honey, a teatime snack of cake (from the cake tree), a sundowner (mushrooms with blue cauliflower) and a selection of fruit before retiring for the night.(I'm very interested in the cake tree )Elizabeth is Missing by Emma HealeyThe song comes to an end and I'm just about to suggest a piece of toast when the next one starts. The bread, soft with a crusty top, is ready sliced, but now I see there's a notice above it: No More Toast! (Eek!!)Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna ClarkeDespite Mr Norrell's tuttings and suckings-in of air at every new revelation, there is no doubt that this conversation did him good. When Lucas entered the room ten minutes later with a pot of chocolate, he was composedly eating toast and preserves and appeared entirely different from the anxious, fretful creature he had been earlier that morning.(It wasn't the conversation that did him good ... obvs it was the toast!!) Arsenic for Tea by Robin StevensDaisy stopped on the first-floor landing. 'Aren't we going to breakfast?' I asked, because even though exciting things were going on all around me, I couldn't stop my stomach wanting toast and marmalade.(Perfectly understandable and natural!) The Hourglass Factory by Lucy Ribchester On the parlour table sat a rack of toast, slowly curling in on itself. (Shameful .. nothing more sad than neglected toast.) The Curse of the House of Foskett Sidney Grice ground his burnt toast into a powder and sprinkled it into his bowl of prune juice. (Not the actions of a sane person imo.) The Restoration of Otto Laird by Nigel Packer 'We'd like to film a few shots of you preparing breakfast.' 'Breakfast? Do people really want to see that sort of thing?' 'It won't be anything too complicated. Buttering the toast, putting on the kettle. Do you think you can manage it?' (I could butter toast in my sleep .. I frequently do!) Life After Life by Kate Atkinson They carried on with weary doggedness. Ursula cheered herself up with the thought of buttered toast, although Phillimore Gardens was out of butter and unless Millie had gone out and queued (unlikely), there was no bread either. (Sad .. I hope Millie had queued.) Campari for Breakfast by Sara Crowe Poor Buddleia has to endure ice baths and corporal punishment, and complains of a complete lack of toast, though she can smell it coming from the nun's kitchen. poppyshake
I am now officially open .. welcome one and all As always, make yourselves comfy. Hope you will pop in often .. I hope I will pop in often for that matter I'm not quite back to full strength as far as reading is concerned so I'm relying on you to tempt me and generally egg me on. I think I was pretty good in not buying too many books .. too good in fact plus I've had a bit of a clear out and taken some books to the charity shop so there is actual space on my bookshelves .. plus I was bought a new bookshelf for Christmas .. woohoo!! Obviously I need to do something about that as an empty bookshelf is a sad bookshelf .. visitors might take me for a non-reader or something Again I'll be looking to you for inspiration Hope you all have a great reading year xx I must tackle Virginia again this year .. when I'm feeling more robust Edited January 8, 2015 by poppyshake

willoyd
Good luck with the reading and health this year Kay. You've certainly put Virginia's toughest on your list (at least that's how I have found it so far, with just Night and Day to go of her novels). Really pleased to see Margaret Elphinstone on your list too - one of the most overlooked writers I know - I think she's wonderful. Thanks Will I had a poor year last year and Virginia didn't even get a look in so I'm determined to put that right and I might as well throw myself in at the deep end .. actually I do have a partial understanding of how The Waves scans etc as I heard it dramatised on radio once .. it was very challenging to say the least. Very apt title .. I daresay I'll be all at sea I've heard a lot of good things about Margaret Elphinstone so I'm looking forward to reading her. Probably add more of her titles then .. have you got a favourite?
