Ooh, The Sky is Everywhere was fabulous, in my opinion of course. I have Jandy Nelson's latest, I'll Give You The Sun, on my shelf, I'm not sure I'll be able to wait for my Box to decide when I should read it though! :)

Will be very interested to hear what you make of The Sky Is Everywhere, not sure if you'll recall my review of it was a tad scathing. (I think, it was certainly scathing in my head, not sure how much of that I let out! )

Well, this is going to be interesting, isn't it? :D  I have one niggle so far, but we'll see how it progresses ...

I thought it was ridiccccculous. If you go into my thread and stick 'Jandy Nelson' in the search box at the top, it should search the thread and bring up the review. The writing was nice, but I found Lennie, Toby and Joe completely unrelatable and unlikely. I am, however, a very harsh critic of YA books, I nearly always find something to complain about!

And yes, this is why I'm so excited to see your response, Claire! A lot of people love Jandy Nelson, but you and I often agree quite a bit too so it could go either way!

Ah I see Noll, I rarely read books and judge how relatable the characters are, I'm very much on the outside looking in if that makes any sense? I'm a big fan of good writing and descriptions and I felt she did that well. :)

I don't necessarily need to be able to relate, but I just felt like anyone liking Lennie was like Edward liking Bella. You might as well like a brick wall. But it is well written, yes, it was an easy book to read and I did like the writing :) I liked the writing enough to potentially give that new Jandy Nelson one a go... if I can get it cheaply on my Kindle

I've just bought I'll Give You The Sun. I was after a 2nd book in one of those 'buy one, get one 1/2 price' deals, and I've seen it on twitter. I'm not sure when I'll get to it, but I'm quite interested now that her writing has divided people. :)

I'm glad you liked Resistance is Futile, I might have to look that one up :).

You said that when I first posted the synopsis!

I finished The Sky is Everywhere this afternoon. Will write a proper review later, but I both loved it and did some major eye rolling. :D

Picked my next book from the Jar of Destiny, and it's The Wimbledon Poisoner by Nigel Williams. :)

 So you agree with both of us?! :P

Ah sorry , it's still on my list of 'books to look up', I haven't looked it up yet :blush2:. It costs me energy to look at a lot of different books in a short time, so I am only doing so limitedly. The list is growing faster compared with me looking them up. I had a big wishlist, but I'm working on splitting it between 'I want to own this book' and 'I want to read this book from the library or borrow it from someone', if that makes sense. Sorry for rambling in your thread :blush2:.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Synopsis (from amazon.co.uk):

Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to centre stage of her own life – and suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two boys. One boy takes Lennie out of her sorrow; the other comforts her in it. But the two can't collide without Lennie's world exploding...

Review:

For some reason, I'm not in the mood for writing reviews at the moment, but I wanted to just say a little bit about this book for Hayley and Noll's benefit. :D

I really enjoyed reading it, and thought it had some great writing about the grieving process.  The main problem I had was that it just felt unbelievable that this amazingly talented and handsome teenager turns up and falls in love almost immediately with a girl who he barely knows, especially after we later find out about

his previous relationship

It was a little bit predictable at times, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Exactly! it was ridiculous and totally unbelieveable, she had the personality of a cardboard box. That ruined it for me, despite the good writing.

Had a week away but didn't get quite as much reading done as usual ... I have a new tablet, and it's been far too distracting!

The books I did manage were:

Blood and Circuses by Kerry Greenwood
Blood Games by Chloe Neill
Sweet Masquerade by M. C. Beaton
C'est Modnifique! by Ian Moore
Ruddy Gore by Kerry Greenwood

Not bad, but could have done much, much better

That is very good going in a week Claire :)You do have to leave a bit of time for drinking and eating etc :D  When you take into account the travelling time etc .. you've read a book a day .. marvellous!

I agree with Kay...that's a great reading week! I hope the Kerry Greenwood books didn't disappoint. :) The third series of the show is currently airing over here. I think they've run out of books to adapt and are now just making up their own stories.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but the last week away we had, I read twelve books, so five just seems a bit too lazy!

I am enjoying the Phryne Fisher books, Kylie.  The next two in the series are a bit cheaper at the moment, but I'm trying not to buy any more books as I went a bit overboard before the holiday, and feel like the TBR has just grown too much in recent weeks.  It's a bit of a quandary as to whether or not to buy them … they're £3.99 whereas the others in the series are mostly around £4.50.  Actually, that's not that much cheaper now I actually look at it - I think I'll hold off for now, after all. :D

The Curvy Girls Club by Michele Gorman

Synopsis (from amazon.co.uk):

Can the curvy girls have their cake and eat it?

Meet best friends Pixie, Ellie, Katie and Jane. Fed up with always struggling to lose weight, they start a social club where size doesn’t matter. Soon it’s the most popular place to be – having fun instead of counting carbs. And the girls suddenly find their lives changing in ways they never imagined.

But outside the club, things aren’t as rosy, as they struggle with the ups and downs of everyday life.

In this funny, heart-warming read about normal women learning to love themselves, the curvy girls soon realise that no matter what life throws at them, together, anything is possible ...

Review:

Really enjoyed this book.  I loved that I could identify with characters who were overweight, but that they weren't stereotypical, where usually, fat people are "jolly and fun".  There was a good range of characters who had proper personalities, not just one dimensional, and I really liked how it looked at some of the things people say and how others can interpret them differently.  It was a fun book, but lots of realistic situations in it too.  I do like Michele's writing, and I've only got one of her books left to read now … not bad for someone I'd never heard of before she was invited for an author visit on the forum! :D

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

Synopsis (from amazon.co.uk):
Have you performed at the circus? Pippi has!
Can you wiggle your toes while you're sleeping? Pippi can!
Are you going to be a pirate when you grow up? Pippi is!

Pippi lives in a house with a horse, a monkey, a suitcase full of gold and no grown-ups to tell her what to do. She's wild and funny and her crazy ideas are always getting her into trouble!

Review:
I do remember a film or television version of Pippi Longstocking when I was very little, but I'd never read any of the books. I did quite enjoy it, but it is aimed at a much younger audience than I would normally read for, and I did have to put it down quite often as I was in danger of getting bored :blush2:
I'm sure if I had a young child to read it to though, I would have enjoyed it more.

Huh, The Curvy Girls Club sounds intriguing. Going on the wishlist!

I used to watch the Pippi cartoon when I was a kid - rewatched a few episodes on Youtube recently and it held up relatively well, for what it was! Never read the book, though.

I feel like I should warn you that The Curvy Girls Club is definitely a light, frothy romantic comedy at heart, so I hope you don't end up disappointed!  I've come back to romcoms recently, but I'm picky in that they need something a bit more than just girl meets boy romance, and Michele Gorman does that for me - she tends to write about female characters looking for a better life, not (just) Mr. Right.

Posted

I'm fine with light romcoms once they're well written and - no pressure! - but I trust your judgment, even if our opinions sometimes vary a bit
