Twin Peaks' writers will release a book in late 2015 about what has happened to the characters in these (soon) 25 years that the show has been gone as a way to trigger the new season that is slated to air in 2016 on Showtime.

Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, will publish The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, an inside look into what has happened to the iconic characters of iconic fictional town since audiences last saw them. The book promises to offer a deeper look into the central mystery of the original series, which ended abruptly, leaving many plot points unresolved.

The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks has also already been sold around the world, with publishers confirmed in Brazil, Italy, Finland, Germany and the U.K.

I didn't know they were starting a new series!  Do you know if David Lynch is directing as he did with the original?  I wish they would do a 25 years after Northern Exposure.

Same writers, same director, Kyle MacLachlan is returning as Agent Cooper. No word yet on how many others are returning to their roles. Basically, the only thing different from the first 2 seasons are that they changed network. From ABC to Showtime. Original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce all the 9 episodes, with Lynch set to direct every episode.
