emelee Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 x When I studied Chemistry we had a lot of lectures and also lab time. Chemistry here is known as one of the studies that has a lot of contact time. The first year we didn't have much spare time at all. In the second and third year there were sometimes days where I'd only have to be at university in the morning or afternoon, but most days were filled with us being at university. Lectures aren't obligatory (the lab is) but I went to nearly all of them and it is recommended to go. Nice to hear though you have a lot of spare time, that sounds nice . I can imagine that. Chemistry is quite different from pedagogy. We never use any lab. It's mostly reading and discussing what we've read. And all reading is done at home, of course. Chemistry sounds so much fun though. It was one of my favorite subjects in secondary school. The lab experiments were always super fun.
bookmonkey Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I know what you mean. It's certainly like that for me too a lot of times. But what I love most about studying is all the free time it provides! It's never 8 hours a day. More like 2-3 hours, twice a week. It's so spoiling. And I am pretty quick doing my homework and studying for exams etc. I have so much free time, and I am absolutely in love with that. You're lucky you can get your study done so quickly. I'm studying by correspondence at the moment. Its supposed to take about 15 hours a week, but it takes me a lot more than that to keep up. Probably at least 40. I'm only doing one paper at a time, I don't think I could keep up with more than that, since I have two kids to think about too.
julie Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Diane Sorry to hear about the problems at work. I hope you get the new job you are trying out for . That can't be a good work environment .They need to treat their employees better . Emelee I envy you ,getting to be a teacher for high school aged kids. That'd be the most fun job ! I really like that age if kids ,don't you ?
Talisman Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) Diane Sorry to hear about the problems at work. I hope you get the new job you are trying out for . That can't be a good work environment .They need to treat their employees better . I am not sure if you meant me Julie, but if you did, thank you, and yes I did get the job, I am really pleased as it will be a big increase in pay to an actual living wage and no more weekends. Plus it will also mean getting out of that toxic place where I am now. Of course it doesn't change anything that has happened there, and I still need to deal with it, but it may mean that I need to deal with it differently, as it does make the problem a little more urgent. I had a meeting with the Union yesterday and it looks like it will be a formal grievance, but now that I have this other job I need to work out with the Union whether to put the grievance in first or do both at the same time. I suspect then I will need to discuss it with the Union again, so will ring them as soon as they open at 9am. In the meantime though, Coran and I are off to Stonehenge later on today, just for a short break, but we both need it. We have arranged a special access visit for Thursday morning before the site opens to the public, so hopefully the weather will stay kind. Edited January 30, 2014 by Talisman
Brian. Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I'm still struggling to find much time to read for pleasure, I've had my head in patents and EU standards for the past week or so. I managed to get an almost complete first draft finished of my paper so its time to pick holes in it and tidy it up.
pontalba Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 June, very glad to hear you're out of that horrible place!!
Athena Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) June, I hope the mini-break will help you feel better and that the weather's good . Brian, I hope you'll get some more time to read soon, it sounds like you're very busy with your study. I wish you good luck with it! Today is my 7th anniversary with my boyfriend . We'll be having a nice walk and a special dinner . Edited January 29, 2014 by Athena
Talisman Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 (edited) June, very glad to hear you're out of that horrible place!! I hope that this time I am as well, and it doesn't all go belly up. We got back from Amesbury a short while ago after an enjoyable few days. We drove up to Stonehenge on the first afternoon to see the new visitor centre and make sure we knew where to go for our special access visit today, and then on Wednesday (yesterday) to went to Uffington in neighbouring Oxfordshire to see the famous White Horse and then on to Avebury. If anything I prefer this to Stonehenge, as it's less well known and spread out over a wider area, plus of course there are no restrictions on touching the stones or anything like that. Our special access this morning though was good. There were about 8 or 9 others who had also booked, including a Japanese couple with a very annoying tour guide who kept getting in my way every time I wanted to take pictures. Coran had her video camera and will hopefully put some of her footage on Youtube. We had hoped to be able to see the sunrise, but unfortunately it was too cloudy, it doesn't matter that much though as it was still an experience, and one that can always repeat. I have been into the stones once before but it was the first time for Coran, so it was particularly interesting for her. I managed to get a bit of reading done of course as well. Nollaig Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Today is my 7th anniversary with my boyfriend . We'll be having a nice walk and a special dinner . Nawwww happy anniversary to you both!
Athena Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Talisman, I'm glad you had fun . Nawwww happy anniversary to you both! x Thanks ! We had a lot of fun, though in the evening I took my medication too early and was nauteous for a few hours which was not so nice. Lesson learned I suppose!
Talisman Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Thanks Athena - it looks like I will be handing in my notice on Monday, as the new company can use the CRB I got from the people I was going to go and work for a few months ago. Apparently you can do this if the CRB is dated within the last 3 months. As for the grievance, the Union rep is in a meeting with someone else's grievance this afternoon, and off again all next week, so that may have to wait. The main thing is to get my notice in, as once they have accepted that then they can't make any more problems than they already have. I have though had to explain the new job what has been going on there, just in case they do make problems. They seem very understanding and it is good to know they are on my side. The fact that I was so honest during my interview certainly helped - honesty is the best policy and I didn't want any secrets.
julie Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 June So sorry for the wrong name in the post above . I've been a bit distracted lately and making all sorts of mistakes . ( A whopping BIG one at the bank ... ) I'm so glad you got the new job . I hope you'll be a lot happier there . It sounds better as far as the working hours definitely ! No more weekends will be nice ! Good luck with the grievance. I hope it works out in your favor . Do they make you work 2 weeks at your old job before starting a new one ? If so, I hope it goes ok for you and they don't give you any more grief . Your trip sounds really fun. Can you post a link to the videos on youtube ?

Don't worry about it Julie - we have all been a bit distracted lately. I have just typed my letter of resignation - I have to give a month's notice. I think I am still owed a few days holiday though, so should be able to take that as part of the notice period so that I have at least a few days off between jobs. My boss then, who has been the major cause of all these problems will find that waiting for her first thing on Monday. As for the grievance, I shall have to see how I feel about that. The main thing is to make sure they accept my resignation first and that I get a confirmed leaving date. At least I don't have to wait for another CRB, as the other job that I thought I was going to is less than 3 months old, so they should be able to use that. As for the videos, it will take a while for them to be edited and so on and for Coran to find a suitable soundtrack, but I will post the links as soon as they are done.
