I finished Dracula this morning. Not sure what to read next. One of my older books, hopefully....I'll have to go through my TBR list and see what grabs me.

Found a copy of My Uncle Silas by H. E. Bates in the Oxfam book shop this morning, and it's one of the English Counties Challenge that isn't available as an ebook, so I snapped it up.  It's a 1958 Penguin edition, with an original price of two shillings and sixpence on the front cover, and I paid £2.49 for it, so that's gone up by approx. ten times it's original value! :D

I did try to start the Only Time Will Tell last night, but we were out for the day and didn't want to carry it around with me (as it's quite a big paperback), so I took my Kindle with me and ended up starting All Creatures Great and Small first of all (another of the English Counties Challenge books) reading the first five chapters, and then couldn't resist the lure of the new, and also read the first three stories in My Uncle Silas too.

I'm going to start The Observations by Jane Harris; I bought it back in 2010 so now it's about time I start it.

I also need to catch up on reviews. I have two I need to do for 2013, and another two for this year, but I'm really struggling. :thud:

The only book I've read so far this year is A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, which was a quick re-read of a book I already knew to be amazing. I'm on the hunt for new books!

Still reading Angela's Ashes but I'm going through it at medium pace.  Didn't read last night, but plan to today.  Its supposed to rain today, so that should be lovely reading weather

My book activity today consisted of going into Waterstone's and browsing...lifting up books that I had written in my wee notebook on my wishlist possibles, reading the back of books and being very good and putting them back on the shelf. I managed to walk out of the shop bookless... :giggle:

I have started reading Skeleton Crew by Stephen King. Part way through The Mist.

I read The Mist years ago, and thought it was great.

I haven't gotten any farther in The Secret History.  I can't even articulate why.  I like what I've read, but I can only think that I don't find any of the characters.....something.  I haven't done much of any reading the last week or so.  I read a short book...another of the Wayward Pines books, a fast action sort of read.

But earlier today I picked up Wallace Stegner's Crossing to Safety, and the language, the prose just blew me away.  I think I'll read that, and hopefully get back to the Tartt book later in the month.

I'm very impressed with The Observations by Jane Harris. Anyone read this one? I really should have read it earlier, instead of letting it sit on my Kindle for nearly 4 years!

Finished Beyond the Great Indoors by Ingvar Ambjornsen and laughed so much at the last few chapters that it was impossible to sleep afterwards. Started On the Black Hill by Bruce Chatwin and that sobered me up as it is much more serious .. good story too :)

I'm reading Robert Jordan, Branson Sanderson - The Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light and Holly Smale - Geek Girl 1: Geek Girl and am quite enjoying both of them.

I've decided to read as many WW1 books this year to commemorate the start of the War in 1914.  I'm presently reading August 1914 by Solzhenitzyn and I'm looking forward to Helen Dunmore's new book to be released next week - The Lie.  At least there is plenty of reading material out ther.

I may start a reading list for 2014 to see how(if) I can keep this up.

I thought about doing this too, but I have so many challenges that I'm beginning to feel a little stressed so I decided not to take on any more.  Good luck.  :)

I finished The President's Hat this afternoon, but now have to do what I've been putting off since last month, and that's read my reading group book for next weeks meeting.  It's a Jeffrey Archer.  I know I shouldn't prejudge it, but I'm really not looking forward to it!

I read several of his books in my teens.  Kane and Abel and its sequel The Prodigal Daughter were good as was Shall We Tell the President? Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less is an excellent read too.  I haven't read anything of his for many years though.  I hope you do enjoy your book!

20 times, I think?!   :D  I loved My Uncle Silas.  I want to read the sequel but I want a particular cover - I missed out on one on Ebay before Christmas and was so annoyed with myself!

I've started Ubik and have read 57 pages.

I'm just about a hundred pages into The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and it's very good. Very readable. I have no idea if the big reveals of what's going on towards the end will hold up to the well-written suspence at the start, but regardless, it has been an excellent and well thought out start!

This is why it's important to be a member of this forum … until now, I've never met anyone with a good word to say about any of his books, so at least I'm getting a balanced view! Having said that, I've only managed about 10 pages so far, and have already diverted onto other books

I did like it, a pleasant read for a weekend. :)

When I read Kane and Abel I was about 15 (so 1981-ish) - I'd never heard of Jeffrey Archer as a politician - he'd left politics in 1974 (I was 8!) and didn't make a political return until 1985 so I read him well before the scandal in his later career.

I know a few years ago it was popular to say one wouldn't read him in principle so as not to give him any money, and to an extent I agree, but his books are easily found in charity shops which avoids him getting any royalties to those who really object.

The last one of his I read was As the Crow Flies, but I think I found it a bit of a disappointment after his earlier books - although I don't remember anything about the story now!  The others do stick in my mind though and I have them on my bookcase even though I haven't read them since the late 80s!  :)

I thought The President's Hat was a good read.  :)

I think with Jeffrey .. I'm not anti because of the scandal necessarily .. it's just I've never liked him so couldn't imagine I'd like anything he wrote. To a lesser extent I thought that about Gyles Brandreth too but his (fiction) books turned out to be very good reads so

I'm just over half way through in Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - The Wheel of Time 14: A Memory of Light and about a third or so of the way through Holly Smale - Geek Girl 1: Geek Girl.

Read some more of All Creatures Great and Small today.  Absolutely loving it so far, and pleased to find that the dialect isn't just written phonetically, which is something I'd been dreading.  There is some in there, but not all, so a definite positive for me.
