Pretty much the same as I felt about it, Tim.  I'm not sure his books are particularly great on the research front, though.  They're very entertaining, but he does tend to ignore the facts when they don't suit his story.  I dread to think what he's doing with the Wars of the Roses

I'm always on the look out for the 80s style fantasy covers. Some of them are brilliant!

Nice!  Should've known that, seeing as I was only looking for it a couple of weeks ago

I have to agree, they can be very beautiful! It's kind of a shame you don't see much covers like those of the 80's anymore these days.

Clearly a well loved book...

Either that or it's the result of people throwing it across the room cos they don't understand it   :giggle2:

So they're apologising for the condition of the book, but they've stuck a bloody great note over the front cover?  Nice! :D

That looks like a beautiful place to read!  It reminds me a little of one of my favorite places, Lithia Park in Ashland, Oregon.

Anyway, I just popped in here to ask if you've read/ heard there is a short story by Brandon Sanderson called Mitosis: A Reckoners Story.  It's only about 40 pages.  I guess to hold us over for Firefight :P

I heard about but haven't read it, it isn't out in the UK until later in the year

Over here, Amazon says Firefight will not be released til Jan.6th.  But the Amazon description for Mitosis says Firefight will be released in Fall of 2014?

What a gorgeous park! You're so lucky. :) Hope you enjoy GotM!

Thanks will be starting it soon. But I did start Prince of Fools today :D

Also finished Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan, review pending.

Awesome! I hope you enjoy reading about Jalan more than you did Jorg. :D

Quick note about GotM: when I read it for the first time, I was a bit confused for the first 150 pages or so. Stick with it - I promise it'll be worth it! :D

I'm interested to hear what you made of it - most reviews I've read have been very divided. I think it must be like marmite. :giggle2:

75 pages into GotM, not a clue what's going on... but still enjoying it :D

Relate more to the cowardly womaniser than the murdering rapist? :giggle2:

The%2BHeroes.jpg The Heroes - Joe Abercrombie

Synopsis

Three men. One battle. No Heroes.

Review

This is the last of Abercrombie's adult books I had left to read, and of the three 'First Law World' it is probably the one I was looking forward to the least. I was aware it was set over a few days and following certain characters in one battle, so I was unsure of how the story would be gripping in comparison to the two other brilliant books.

I think my fears were well founded as it didn't grip me as much. It had all the usual elements that make Abercrombie's books a great read, it was dark, gritty yet full colourful and witty characters. All of which are brilliant but I think it was lacking that all important narrative that drives the story forward. The battle is shown from both sides neither of which are better or in the 'right' so as the reader I wasn't routing for one particular side, which ultimately meant I wasn't too interested in the outcome. It is still great fun reading the characters in their futileness of battle and it provides a stark social commentary on the pointlessness of war.

I can usually judge a book by how long it takes me to finish, and I found myself picking up 2 or 3 other books whilst getting through this one. I enjoyed it whilst reading but never found myself looking forward to picking it up again.

I am probably not doing the book justice, it is good, the writing is fantastic and characters feel very real. I would recommend to it people, but certainly not over Best Served Cold and Red Country which are a couple of the best fantasy books I've read. The Heroes is an ambitious book and is probably the best it could have been given the subject matter.

Overall 8/10

When you put it like that... can't really relate to either lol, but slightly more towards the coward than the rapist. :blush2:

Won't keep you waiting :P
